Notes: The energy decomposition scheme proposed in a recent paper has been realized by performing numerical integrations. The sample calculations carried out for some simple molecules show excellent agreement with the chemical picture of molecules, indicating that such an energy decomposition analysis can be useful from the point of view of connecting quantum mechanics with the genuine chemical concepts. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Although the sperm of externally fertilizing fishes usually has a brief life span of up to a few minutes, this study showed that the sperm of the three-spined stickleback Gasterosteus aculeatus moved for several hours in brackish water and up to at least 10 h in the presence of ovarian fluid. Three-spined sticklebacks were able to spawn in waters ranging from full-strength sea water to fresh water, an ability unusual among fishes. The influence of salinity on sperm motility was examined, using three-spined sticklebacks from sea (salinity 30), brackish (5·5) and freshwater (0) populations. All three populations were found to have sperm with long motility periods in brackish water, lasting 165–270 min. Seawater three-spined sticklebacks had sperm motile for up to 65 min in sea water, whereas sperm from fresh- and brackish-water fish were quiescent in this medium. In fresh water, sperm from all three populations showed a very brief motility period, lasting 〈60 s. The presence of ovarian fluid, however, prolonged the motility period of sperm from both fresh- and brackish-water three-spined sticklebacks, for up to 7 and 10 h in fresh and brackish water, respectively, with some sperm found to be motile for up to 24 h. The results indicated that ovarian fluid created a favourable environment for the sperm and might have facilitated the three-spined sticklebacks' successful penetration of fresh water.

Notes: Sperm motility of the fifteen-spined stickleback Spinachia spinachia was investigated in different salinities, with or without the addition of ovarian fluid (25%). Sperm velocity, longevity, linearity and percentage of motile sperm were analysed with the aid of computer-assisted sperm analysis (CASA). The sperm were found to have the longest duration of motility in sea water (60–90 min in salinities 20 and 30), shorter in brackish water (15–30 min in salinities 5·5 and 10) and were immotile in fresh water. The presence of ovarian fluid did not influence any sperm motility variable in any tested salinity.

Notes: The gonadosomatic indices (IG) of female conger eel Conger conger, aged between 2 and 11 years postmetamorphosis, ranged between 0·04 and 4·78 and were correlated with both age and body length. Microscopical examination of the gonads showed immature ovaries at two main stages of oocyte development, pre-vitellogenic oocytes for IG 〈 1, and oocytes at an early vitellogenic stage (lipid vesicle stage) for IG〉1. The immaturity of the conger eels sampled in Concarneau Bay indicates that this species probably spawns in deeper oceanic waters. Radioimmunoassays (RIA) of sex steroids gave low serum levels of oestradiol and of 11-ketotestosterone, but higher levels of testosterone correlated with increase in IG. Immunoenzymatic assay (ELISA) indicated low serum levels of vitellogenin (VtG), which were significantly correlated with IG. The pre-vitellogenic and early vitellogenic stages observed in the coastal C. conger were similar to the oocyte stages found in the European eel Anguilla anguilla, at the yellow and silver phases of its life cycle respectively. However, other morpho-functional changes, associated with silvering in Anguilla species, such as the increase in ocular index, and regression of the digestive tract, did not occur at the early vitellogenic stage in conger eels.

Notes: Abstract. A generalization of the two-by-two rotation technique is proposed, permitting a whole row (column) of the matrix to be treated simultaneously. The method is based on the explicit analytical evaluation of the matrix exponent representing a symmetric combination of the individual rotations. Besides constructing the unitary transformation matrices, a new orthogonalization algorithm is also proposed. The resulting “unitary perturbation theory” and orthogonalization method may be useful in different areas.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary Report of 10 cases of stomac resection operated 9 months to 4 years after vagotomy. Beside peptic ulcers, scars after peptic ulcers and chronic gastritis extensive changes in the nervous system of the stomac wall were found. The alterations partly degenerative, partly proliferative were to be distinguished in some points from nervous changes in peptic ulcers, peptic scars and gastritis without vagotomy.
