Summary 1. Experimental conditions for the assay of soil fungicides are described, in which crop plants serve as indicators of the degree of control. 2. The suitability of various types of fungi, and also the most appropriate time for a soil inoculation withPythium sp. andRhizoctonia solani, were determined. The experimental set-up enabled specific action against one or the other fungus to be determined. 3. The method of application of the fungicide (incorporation or drench; formulation as solution, emulsion or suspension) influences the success of the control, as well as the accuracy of the results. 4. As representative fungicides, Captan, PCNB and an organic mercurial compound were used. The results were exceptionally reproducible, and could without difficulty be subjected to a statistical analysis. 5. A high degree of success in control ofPythium andRhizoctonia was attained with Captan at application levels considerably below the fungitoxic limit. The implications of this finding are briefly discussed from the viewpoint of a combination of chemical and biological control.
Notizen:
