    Notes: We present a new experimental method for searching for free fractional charge in bulk matter; this new method derives from the traditional Millikan liquid drop method but allows the use of much larger drops, 20–100 μm in diameter, compared to the traditional method that uses drops less than 15 μm in diameter. These larger drops provide the substantial advantage that it is then much easier to consistently generate drops containing liquid suspensions of powdered meteorites and other special minerals. These materials are of great importance in bulk searches for fractional charge particles that may have been produced in the early universe. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Introduction: The implications of mechanical deformation on calculated body surface potentials are investigated using a coupled biophysically based model. Methods and Results: A cellular model of cardiac excitation-contraction is embedded in an anatomically accurate two-dimensional transverse cross-section of the cardiac ventricles and human torso. Waves of activation and contraction are induced by the application of physiologically realistic boundary conditions and solving the bidomain and finite deformation equations. Body surface potentials are calculated from these activation profiles by solving Laplace's equation in the passive surrounding tissues. The effect of cardiac deformation on electrical activity, induced by contraction, is demonstrated in both single-cell and tissue models. Action potential duration is reduced by 7 msec when the single cell model is subjected to a 10% contraction ramp applied over 400 msec. In the coupled electromechanical tissue model, the T wave of the ECG is shown to occur 18 msec earlier compared to an uncoupled excitation model. To assess the relative effects of myocardial deformation on the ECG, the activation sequence and tissue deformation are separated. The coupled and uncoupled activation sequences are mapped onto the undeforming and deforming meshes, respectively. ECGs are calculated for both mappings. Conclusion: Adding mechanical contraction to a mathematical model of the heart has been shown to shift the T wave on the ECG to the left. Although deformation of the myocardium resulting from contraction reduces the T wave amplitude, cell stretch producing altered cell membrane kinetics is the major component of this temporal shift.     Notes: Summary Classically, recall dermatitis refers to chemotherapy-induced reactivation of skin damage caused by radiotherapy months, or even years, earlier. The concept of recall dermatitis has now been extended to include radiation recall dermatitis induced by other drugs, ultraviolet radiation, extravasation of drugs, and allergic contact dermatitis. We now describe recall dermatitis along the residual cutaneous lesions of a previous thoracic herpes zoster in a patient who developed a drug eruption after oral administration of aciclovir. The most striking feature consisted of confluent linear erythema along the dermatomes previously involved by the herpes zoster episode. Histopathologic study demonstrated small foci of spongiosis, vacuolar changes involving the basal layer of the epidermis and single necrotic keratinocytes scattered within the epidermis. The papillary dermis appeared oedematous and with dilated blood capillaries surrounded by a sparse inflammatory infiltrate composed mainly of lymphocytes. Serial sections failed to demonstrate cytologic changes of herpes varicella zoster infection. We interpreted this case as an example of recall dermatitis because the widespread cutaneous eruption secondary to aciclovir was more intense in skin previously compromised by herpes varicella zoster infection. To the best of our knowledge, recall dermatitis has not been described before at the site of previous involvement by herpes zoster.

    Notes: Summary Ewing's sarcoma is a malignant osseous neoplasm that affects mostly children and young adult males. Clinically, the neoplasm presents with oedema, swelling, and pain of the involved area. Histopathologically, Ewing's sarcoma consists of solid sheets of small round cells, with vesicular nuclei and scant cytoplasm, arranged in irregular masses separated by strands of fibrous tissue, with areas of necrosis en masse intermingled with intratumoural haemorrhage. Ewing's sarcoma is an extremely aggressive neoplasm and metastases to sites such as lung, pleura, other bones, central nervous system, liver, and regional lymph nodes frequently develop in early stages of the disease. Surprisingly, despite the highly aggressive biological behaviour of this neoplasm, cutaneous metastases from Ewing's sarcoma are very uncommon. We report two patients with Ewing's sarcoma of the bone who developed cutaneous metastases. As in other internal malignancies, the onset of cutaneous metastases in patients with Ewing's sarcoma indicates a poor prognosis.

    Notes: We report a French pedigree with members having an inherited combination of non-epidermolytic palmoplantar keratoderma (NEPPK) and sensorineural deafness. The penetrance of both features was incomplete. Additional ectodermal defects were absent. The expression of numerous epidermal proteins (keratins, fillagrin, cornified envelope proteins, intercellular junction proteins including connexin 26, and loricrin) defined with immunolabelling was normal in the proband. The combination was shown to be associated with the A7445G point mutation in the mitochondrial genome (mtDNA). This mutation is responsible for a subtype of NEPPK which is so far the only mtDNA mutation-associated keratoderma.

    Notes: The β-amyloid protein (Aβ) is the major protein component of amyloid plaques found in the Alzheimer brain. Although there is a loss of acetylcholinesterase (AChE) from both cholinergic and non-cholinergic neurones in the brain of Alzheimer patients, the level of AChE is increased around amyloid plaques. Previous studies using P19 cells in culture and transgenic mice which overexpress human Aβ have suggested that this increase may be due to a direct action of Aβ on AChE expression in cells adjacent to amyloid plaques. The aim of the present study was to examine the mechanism by which Aβ increases levels of AChE in primary cortical neurones. Aβ1−42 was more potent than Aβ1−40 in its ability to increase AChE in primary cortical neurones. The increase in AChE was unrelated to the toxic effects of the Aβ peptides. The effect of Aβ1−42 on AChE was blocked by inhibitors of α7 nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (α7 nAChRs) as well as by inhibitors of L- or N-type voltage-dependent calcium channels (VDCCs), whereas agonists of α7 nAChRs (choline, nicotine) increased the level of AChE. The results demonstrate that the effect of Aβ1−42 on AChE is due to an agonist effect of Aβ1−42 on the α7 nAChR.

    Notes: Yield per tree, ripening date and oil content components (fruit fresh weight, flesh moisture, flesh/stone ratio both on fresh and dry weight basis, flesh and fruit oil content on dry weight basis) have been studied during 3 years in seedlings from crosses among the olive cultivars ‘Arbequina’, ‘Frantoio’ and ‘Picual’. Genetic and environmental variances and year-to-year consistency of data were estimated. Most of the traits evaluated showed a range of variability as large or even larger than either the range observed in a random sample of cultivars from the World Olive Germplasm Bank of Cordoba or the range reported in the evaluation of olive cultivars collections. Between-years correlation coefficients showed that for a character such as oil content the values obtained in the first year could be reliable indicators of the values obtained in following years. Observations over 2 years may be required for characters such as fruit weight or flesh/stone ratio on a fresh weight basis and even more than 2 years may be required to estimate yield per tree.

    Notes: Hexaploid tritordeum is the amphiploid derived from the cross between Hordeum chilense and durum wheat. The storage proteins synthesized in the Hch genome influence the gluten strength of this amphiploid. The D-prolamins of H. chilense have been analysed by sodium dodecyl sulphate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis with and without urea. A new locus named Glu-Hch3 has been detected. The effects of allelic variation at this locus on gluten strength, as measured the sodium dodecyl sulphate sedimentation test, were determined using seeds of 92 lines from a cross of two hexaploid tritordeum lines. Two allelic variants have been detected for this locus, which have shown different effects on gluten strength.
