    Notes: In certain applications, the surface wave driven plasma column can replace metal as the guiding medium in radio frequency antennas. Such plasma antennas offer the possibility of low radar detectability and negligible mutual coupling when de-energized. Experimental results are presented confirming that the two most important physical issues, namely antenna efficiency and noise, are not compromised by the use of a plasma. It is also shown that the relatively high efficiency of the surface wave driven plasma column can be predicted by a simple calculation. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Measurements of the rf electric field have been made along the z axis of a helicon reactor using a retarding field energy analyzer. A fluid code and a simple analytical model have been developed to analyze the ion energy distribution functions, especially in the case of bimodal distributions where the ion transit time through the sheath in front of the analyzer is comparable to the rf period. A generalized curve (and an analytical approximation to that curve) has been developed from the analytical model and confirmed by the self-consistent fluid model for high, low, and intermediate ion transit time, which can be used by experimenters to quickly convert the experimental results (energy peak separation, plasma potential and density, electron temperature), which are related to rf sheath oscillations, to absolute values of the rf electric field. An analysis of the errors involved in the derivation of the field is given. The results agree qualitatively with rf pickup measured with a floating Langmuir probe. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: RX 821002 is the 2-methoxy congener of idazoxan. In binding and tissue studies it behaves as a selective antagonist of α2-adrenoceptors, with at least 5 times greater affinity for these receptors than any other binding site. It does not select between the different types of α2-receptor. Although this drug probably has no future as a therapeutic agent, it remains a good probe for physiological activity at α2-adrenoceptors in animal experiments. A particularly useful feature of this compound is its lack of binding at I1 and I2 imidazoline receptors. However, it has relatively high affinity for 5-HT1A receptors (at which it acts as an antagonist) and a tendency to behave as an inverse agonist at α2A-adrenoceptors in some cell culture systems. These potential drawbacks may be overcome by careful design of experiments, and the greater selectivity of RX 821002 renders it much superior to yohimbine or idazoxan as a tool for probing physiological actions at α2-receptors. It can be compared favorably with other selective antagonists such as atipamezole.In physiological studies, RX 821002 augments norepinephrine release in the frontal cortex and increases drinking behavior in rat. In rabbit, intrathecal administration of this drug enhances somatic and autonomic motor outflows, showing that tonic adrenergic descending inhibition of withdrawal reflexes and sympathetic pre-ganglionic neurons is strong in this species. The potentiation of reflexes may be considered a pro-nociceptive action. In the same model, RX 821002 antagonizes the inhibitory effects of the μ opioid fentanyl, indicating that exogenous opioids synergize with endogenously released norepinephrine in the spinal cord. Thus, the careful use of RX 821002 has revealed several aspects of the physiological activity of α2-adrenoceptors in rabbit spinal cord and rat brain. We recommend that RX 821002 and/or compounds with similar selectivity for α2-adrenoceptors (atipamezole, MK-912, RS-79948) should be used in preference to yohimbine or idazoxan in all future studies of this type.

    Notes: The extent of human-induced change and damage to Earth's ecosystems renders ecosystem repair an essential part of our future survival strategy, and this demands that restoration ecology provide effective conceptual and practical tools for this task. We argue that restoration ecology has to be an integral component of land management in today's world, and to be broadly applicable, has to have a clearly articulated conceptual basis. This needs to recognize that most ecosystems are dynamic and hence restoration goals cannot be based on static attributes. Setting clear and achievable goals is essential, and these should focus on the desired characteristics for the system in the future, rather than in relation to what these were in the past. Goal setting requires that there is a clear understanding of the restoration options available (and the relative costs of different options). The concept of restoration thresholds suggests that options are determined by the current state of the system in relation to biotic and abiotic thresholds. A further important task is the development of effective and easily measured success criteria. Many parameters could be considered for inclusion in restoration success criteria, but these are often ambiguous or hard to measure. Success criteria need to relate clearly back to specific restoration goals. If restoration ecology is to be successfully practiced as part of humanity's response to continued ecosystem change and degradation, restoration ecologists need to rise to the challenges of meshing science, practice and policy. Restoration ecology is likely to be one of the most important fields of the coming century.

    Notes: Infantile chaotic atrial tachycardia is a rare, usually self-limited arrhythmia that is frequently resistant to conventional antiarrhythmic therapy. In contrast to other arrhythmias in the pediatric population, a pathophvsiologic substrate has not been identified. Four infants who developed chaotic atrial tachycardia in the setting of documented adenovirus or coxsackie virus infections are presented. This association led to the speculation that transient multifocal atrial myocarditis could be the substrate for chaotic atrial tachycardia in some infants.

    Notes: We present low-temperature (365 mK) magnetization measurements of 40×100 μm2 mesas of two dimensional electron gases (2DEGs) integrated into micromechanical cantilever magnetometers. Over a wide range of applied magnetic field, the cantilever resonance frequency reveals the thermodynamic magnetization of the 2DEG. Upon illumination of the sample, we observe the appearance of both cyclotron and Zeeman gaps in the density of states. We attribute this to the narrowing of the disorder-broadened Landau levels as the carrier concentration is increased. Additionally, we observe strong peaks in the dissipation of the system at small integer filling factors which we associate with eddy currents excited by the cantilever motion. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: We report photoluminescence (PL) and time-resolved PL measurements of GaN/AlxGa1−xN multiple quantum wells with barriers of high aluminum content, x=0.5. In wells of width 1–2 nm, low temperature recombination appears to be dominated by radiative processes with lifetimes ∼0.5 ns. Dependence of lifetime on emission energy is very small compared to InGaN quantum wells, indicating that carrier localization is very slight and interface quality is high. In 4 nm wells, PL emission at an energy below the bulk GaN band gap and long recombination lifetimes result from the polarization field across the wells. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.
