    Notes: Abstract  Balloon digits were found in two neonates with congenital constriction ring syndrome. The affected digits were the right long finger and right great toe. They were surgically treated at the age of 10 and 9 days, respectively. Morphologic improvement was dramatic after surgery. In cases with extensive enlargement, severe cyanosis, redness, and no subsidence of edema within several days after birth, early operative treatment may be necessary to maintain digit viability and prevent autoamputation due to circulatory embarrassment. It can also be helpful to prevent fibrosis of the subcutaneous tissue. Pathologic examination revealed marked proliferation of fibrous tissue and lymphatic vessels.

    Notes: Abstract An unusual case of the simultaneous occurrence of prostate cancer and IgE myeloma is reported. A 74-year-old man with urinary disturbance and elevated serum prostate-specific antigen level, of 7.4 ng/ml, showed Bence-Jones protein in the urine. Immunoelectrophoresis of the serum showed elevation of IgE kappa monoclonal protein. Radical prostatectomy was performed as a curative therapy for T1c, Gleason 3-2 prostate cancer. The patient has remained free of progression of both the myeloma and the prostate cancer for 26 months after the initial diagnosis.

    Notes: Abstract Cytogenetic, molecular cytogenetic, and molecular studies of prostate cancer have produced a large volume of data about chromosomal loci that are aberrant in prostate cancer. The cumulative data on prostate cancer reveal allelic losses on chromosome arms 2q, 3p, 5q, 6q, 7q, 8p, 9p, 10p, 10q, 11p, 11q, 12p, 13q, 16q, 17p, 17q, 18q, and 21q, but there is a great deal of variability between studies. In most cases, the frequency of allelic loss is higher in metastatic tissues or hormone-refractory tumors than in primary tumors. There also seem to be discrepancies in the genetic findings depending on methods employed. Molecular genetic studies, using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) analysis of microsatellite markers, demonstrated allelic loss at 7q31.1, whereas fluorescence in situ hybridization analysis showed a gain at the same region. Com-mon sites of allelic loss that are consistently observed by various methods seem to exist on chromosome arms 8p, 10q, 13q, and 16q. PTEN/MMAC1 has been identified on 10q23.3 and was found to be frequently mutated in advanced prostate cancer. Other regions are also considered to harbor genes associated with the development and progression of prostate cancer, and these could be included in the diagnostic methods for the substaging of prostate cancer.

    Notes: Abstract: We conducted a cross-sectional study of the effects of soybean protein intake on bone mineral density and biochemical markers in 85 postmenopausal Japanese women. Nutrients in the diet of postmenopausal Japanese women visiting the osteoporosis unit, including subjects with normal lumbar spine bone mineral density (L2–4 BMD), were investigated by questionnaire, and the calculated daily energy, protein, soy protein and calcium intake were obtained. L2–4 BMD was measured with dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry, and assays done of serum alkaline phosphatase (ALP) and serum intact osteocalcin (IOC) as bone formation markers and urinary pyridinoline (UPYR) and urinary deoxypyridinoline (UDPYR) as bone resorption markers. Soy protein intake was significantly associated with the Z-score for L2–4 BMD (r= 0.23, p = 0.038) and UDPYR (r =−0.23, p = 0.034). Stepwise multiple regression analyses showed that soy protein intake is significantly associated with the Z-score for L2–4 BMD (β= 0.225, p = 0.04) and UDPYR (β=−0.08, p = 0.03) among four nutritional factors. These results suggest that high soy protein intake is associated with a higher bone mineral density and a lower level of bone resorption, but further studies are needed to confirm the causal dynamic mechanisms.
