Notes: Abstract A hybrid-specific expressed cDNA fragment, designated as AG5, has been identified in wheat seedling leaves using differential mRNA display. AG5 contains an open reading frame (ORF) encoding 183 amino acid residues. Comparison with amino acid sequences in GenBank revealed that the AG5 protein is homologous to a group of Gly-rich proteins with consensus sequence-type RNA-binding domains (CS-RBD). Structural analysis showed that AG5 protein contains five motifs, including a consensus sequence-type RNA-binding domain near its N-terminus, arginine/aspartic acid repeats and a Gly-rich region in its center, a Cys-X2-Cys-X4-His-X4-Cys (CCHC) zinc finger motif in the Gly-rich region, and TrySer2ArgAsp2Arg repeats towards its C-terminus. Of all previously described RNA-binding proteins, only RZ-1 from tobacco has a similar structure to the AG5 protein, but RZ-1 lacks a TrySer2ArgAsp2Arg repeat motif, indicating that the two proteins may belong to a family of closely related proteins in plants. The possible role of AG5 and its relation to wheat heterosis are discussed.

Notes: Abstract: We study the nonclassical properties and algebraic characteristics of the negative binomial states introduced by Barnett recently. The ladder operator formalism and displacement operator formalism of the negative binomial states are found and the algebra involved turns out to be the SU(1,1) Lie algebra via the generalized Holstein-Primarkoff realization. These states are essentially Perelomov's SU(1,1) coherent states. We reveal their connection with the geometric states and find that they are excited geometric states. As intermediate states, they interpolate between the number states and geometric states. We also point out that they can be recognized as the nonlinear coherent states. Their nonclassical properties, such as sub-Poissonian distribution and squeezing effect are discussed. The quasiprobability distributions in phase space, namely the Q and Wigner functions, are studied in detail. We also propose two methods of generation of the negative binomial states. d 32.80.Pj Optical cooling of atoms; trapping

Notes: Abstract: For pairs of particles extracted from a symmetric state of N two-level systems, the two-particle density matrix is expressed in terms of expectation values of collective spin operators for the large system. Results are presented for experimentally relevant examples of pure states: Dicke states | S, M〉, spin coherent, and spin squeezed states, where only the symmetric subspace, S = N/2 is populated, and for thermally entangled mixed states populating also lower S values. The entanglement of the extracted pair is then quantified by a calculation of the concurrence, which provides directly the entanglement of formation of the pair.
