Notes: The most frequent type of citizen complaint filed against police officers involves how the officer uses interpersonal communication. The most common context of police-citizen contact is the traffic stop, and verbal judo is the most widely used police training program in interpersonal communication intended to reduce citizen complaints and improve citizen cooperation. However, does verbal judo meet citizen expectations for appropriate traffic stop behavior? In order to determine what communication behaviors citizens view as appropriate during traffic stops, a sample of 245 college students were surveyed about their preferences with regard to the officers' behavior. The responses of the sample support the use of verbal judo techniques during routine traffic stops. The responses also demonstrated support for the theory of procedural justice.

Notes: Abstract Ten benthic macroinvertebrate indicator metrics commonly used in the assessment of running waters (taxa richness, total density, number of EPT taxa, Shannon's index, Simpson's index, ASPT, DFI, and three acidity indices) were evaluated for effect size, standardized effect size, statistical power and the number of samples needed to detect an impact of either eutrophication or acidification. The eutrophication and acidity indices were also evaluated for type I and type II errors. Indices were evaluated using the coefficient of variation of data taken from a spatial dataset of some 700 sites distributed across Sweden, and a temporal dataset of five streams sampled over a time period of 6–11 years. Richness measures (taxa richness and number of EPT taxa) and the two eutrophication indices (ASPT and DFI) had the highest standardized effect sizes as well as a high statistical power and therefore needed fewer samples to detect changes caused by perturbation. Conversely, total density of individuals was the least informative metric with the lowest standardized effect size and the highest spatial, temporal and sample variability.

Notes: Abstract Chinese and American scientists are co-operating to develop concepts, strategies, agreements, and proposals in support of an economic development and sustainable ecosystems project in Yunnan Province, People's Republic of China. Yunnan's Provincial Government has initiated a major programme to develop and further utilise its biological resources to help improve economic conditions for its citizens. They are co-operating with the US Geological Survey (USGS) on evaluation and management of biological resources so economic development will be compatible with sustainable ecological systems. Scientists from the USGS and co-operating universities will provide expertise on synthesising biological data, conducting a Gap Analysis for the Province, evaluating innovative economic opportunities, and designing an effective education, training, and outreach programme.
