Notes: Synthesis of zirconia nanoparticles by flame spray pyrolysis (FSP) at high production rates is investigated. Product powder is collected continuously in a baghouse filter unit that is cleaned periodically by air-pressure shocks. Nitrogen adsorption (BET), X-ray diffractometry (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) are used to characterize the product powder. The effect of powder production rate (up to 600 g/h), dispersion gas flow rate, and precursor concentration on product particle size, crystallinity, morphology, and purity is investigated. The primary particle size of zirconia is controlled from 6 to 35 nm, while the crystal structure consists of mostly tetragonal phase (80–95 wt%), with the balance monoclinic phase at all process conditions. The tetragonal crystal size is close to the primary particle size, which indicates weak agglomeration of single crystals.

Notes: We have used the photoemission spectroscopy of the graphite hollow cathode sooting discharge to identify the roles played by the kinetic and potential sputtering, respectively. Our indicators are the relative densities of the sputtered carbon C, the Ne metastable atoms, and the ionized components (Ne+) of the regenerative sooting plasma. We find that the metastable atoms are the main agents for the regeneration of the soot. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract  We report a 17-year-old Saudi girl who presented with nephrotic syndrome at the age of 7 years. A renal biopsy revealed a mildly proliferative immune complex-mediated glomerulonephritis, which on ultrastructural examination revealed prominent thickening of the capillary basement membranes, along with marked splitting and lamellation of lamina densa resembling those seen in Alport syndrome. These changes were even more pronounced in renal biopsies performed 1 and 3 years later, respectively. Thorough clinical evaluations and follow-up of more than 10 years failed to reveal any evidence of Alport syndrome. Review of the literature revealed four similar cases reported previously. Diffuse and prominent Alport-like glomerular changes may rarely be seen in patients with nephrotic syndrome in the absence of Alport syndrome. Pathogenesis of these changes, however, remains to be understood.

Notes: Abstract Combined TG/DTA techniques have been used to study the thermal decomposition of R3PAuCN (where Ris ethyl, cyclohexyl, o-tolyl, m-tolyl, p-tolyl, allyl, cyanoethyl,1-naphthyl and phenyl) complexes. It was observed that all of these complexes underwant decomposition cum redox reactions in the range of 200–600oC with evolution of both transligands, which are phosphine and cyanide, leaving metallic gold as a residue. The thermal decomposition of o-Tol3PAuCN has revealed that this is a stepwise process. In the first step decomposition takes place with evolution of phosphine and generation of AuCN, which in second step undergoes a redox reaction to produce metallic gold. The DTA curves have also confirmed these results.
