    Notes: Objectives : The aim of this study was to determine the impact of previous infection with cytomegalovirus (CMV) on restenosis after aggressive angioplasty with provisional stenting. Design: We prospectively studied 78 consecutive patients scheduled for 6-month follow-up coronary angiography as part of the SIPS study. Anti-CMV IgG and IgM antibodies were measured on admission. Results: Anti-CMV IgG positive and anti-CMV IgG negative patients had similar minimal lumen diameter (MLD) in the target vessel before (0.68 ± 0.49 mm vs 0.71 ± 0.52 mm, P = 0.84) and directly after the intervention (2.50 ± 0.60 mm vs 2.57 ± 0.52 mm, P = 0.58). After 6 months, however, the MLD was significantly smaller in CMV-positive as compared to CMV-negative patients (1.57 ± 0.82 mm vs 2.00 ± 0.83 mm, P 〈 0.03). Net lumen gain at 6 months was significantly lower in CMV-positive patients (0.89 ± 0.79 mm vs 1.30 ± 0.87 mm, P 〈 0.04) and the rate of clinically relevant restenosis was significantly higher (31% vs 7%, P 〈 0.02). In a multivariate logistic regression model, CMV seropositivity was an independent predictor of restenosis (odds ratio 5.7 (95%CI 1.2–30.3, P = 0.04). Conclusions: Six months after aggressive coronary angioplasty with provisional stenting, patients with prior CMV infection had a smaller MLD and a higher restenosis rate. CMV seropositivity was a strong independent predictor of restenosis. (J Interven Cardiol 2003;16:307–313)

    Notes: Confined electromagnetic fields are created at the surface of various substrates such as indium-tin-oxide (ITO) and gold films. Two scanning tunneling microscope tips (Pt–Ir and W) are used to create a localized perturbation. With ITO as a substrate, an evanescent field is observed without a tip-substrate interaction. Conversely, with a gold film surface formation of "gap modes," the particle-substrate cavity is seen. Gap modes at the interface of a metallic film are involved essentially when the modulation amplitude of the particle is below 100 nm. In the context of apertureless near-field microscopy, this demonstrates the influence of tip-surface coupling in scanning plasmon near-field microscope (SPNM) signals. The strong interaction of the tip with the metal substrate, through its surface plasmon, when combined with SPNM, may result in inaccuracies in the claimed chemical identification or intrinsic optical properties of the particle. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Background Ingrown nails are common in young people, surgery is often required and recurrence rates are high.Objective To evaluate the efficacy of CO2 laser surgery.Methods Three hundred and two patients were operated with the CO2 laser under local anaesthesia.Results They were evaluated one year later: nine cases (3%) recurred and we observed 15 cases (5%) of spicules.Conclusion Ingrown nails are easily operated with the CO2 laser; bleeding is minimal, post-operative pain is low, infection is rare, the wounds heal without exhudative drainage and cosmetic results are good.

    Notes: The endothelial cells which constitute the vascular wall are organo-specific and reflect the biological reaction taking place in the tissue underlying the endothelial layer. This is the key for reparation after local injury, as, for example, response to UV induced production of neuromediators by neurosensory cells and keratinocytes. Endothelial cells react to the injury, mainly by the production of adhesion molecules to recruit competent cells which are selected to adhere extravasate and can operate local anti-inflammatory/immune reaction. We demonstrate that the skin model constituted here by the cooperation of keratinocytes and skin-derived microvascular endothelial cells is specific to the dermal selective processes as compared with the reaction of other organ microvasculary endothelial cells. Consequently, our data confirm that in order to reproduce in vitro local biological reactions it is indeed crucial to use the proper and representative endothelial cells. This is especially illustrated in this work by the conjugated effects produced by the UV of mediators production by keratinocytes and the modulation of their subsequent effect on activation of endothelial cell adhesion capacity.

    Notes: Formulated feed for freshwater prawn farming under semi-intensive conditions is expensive, presenting a significant portion of the farm's operating costs. Production and availability of natural food in earthen ponds may reduce the needs for formulated feed. This paper evaluates growth of freshwater prawn Macrobrachiurn rosenbergii under three feeding regimes, where supplemental feed was reduced and natural productivity of the ponds was increased by a fertilization program that included the addition of lime, phosphorus and nitrogen. Prawns (4.35 g) were stocked into 12 50-m2 earthen ponds (6 juveniles/m2) and grown for 84 d feeding on 25% crude protein ration. Chemical and physical water parameters were monitored routinely. Growth and production were similar at 100% formulated feed supplementation with no fertilization and at 50% formulated feed with fertilization, as determined by weight gain, specific growth rate, and net yield (P 〉0.05). However, further reduction in feed supplementation (0, 25%, and 50% of feeding rate, respectively, for each subsequent 28-d period) with fertilization, yielded shrimp smaller than market size. Feed conversion ratios were significantly higher (P 0.05) for the 100% versus the 50% feed supplementation. Survival rate averaged 86% with no significant differences among treatments. Reducing up to 50% of the supplemental feed with added fertilization for increased natural productivity does not reduce yield of M. rosenbergii raised under semi-intensive conditions in northeastern Brazil. Under the local conditions of semi-arid and warm water temperatures (24.0–33.5 C), increasing natural productivity of ponds significantly improves feed conversion ratio, which is reflected in feed cost savings and potential savings of the farm operating cost.

    Notes: Background  In Europe, several filler devices are currently on the market for use in aesthetic dermatology and some of them cause severe, permanent, adverse reactions. Since 1996 a non-animal stabilized hyaluronic acid (NASHA) from Q-Medical, Sweden, has been introduced and is becoming a leading product in aesthetic dermatology. Hyaluronic acid has no species specificity and skin testing is not recommended before treatment.Objective  Our purpose was to evaluate the incidence of adverse reactions from 1997 to 2001 and the safety of NASHA after injections into the skin for aesthetic reasons.Method  Surveys were sent to physicians in European countries that agreed to participate. This is a retrospective study. A total of 12 344 syringes were sold by the Q-Medical to these physicians and we evaluated the total number of patients treated to 35% of this number (4320). We separated immediate hypersensitivity reactions from delayed reactions and analysed infectious and other types of reactions.Results  From 1997 until 2001, 34 cases of hypersensitivity were reported: 16 cases of immediate hypersensitivity and 18 cases of delayed. The global risk of sensitivity is 0.8%. Since 2000, the amount of protein in the raw product has decreased and the incidence of hypersensitivity reactions is around 0.6%. As 50% of these reactions are immediate and resolved within less than 3 weeks, the risk of strong but transient, delayed reaction is around 0.3%. Four cases of abscess were reported. They were all sterile. No bacterial infection was found. Herpetic recurrence is possible after lip augmentation according to the technique of injection. No systemic reactions were reported.Conclusion  NASHA is a very useful and safe filler product. Skin testing does not seem to be necessary.
