Notizen: Using a pump–probe method with a 150 fs laser at the wavelength of 1.55 μm, we have experimentally demonstrated that single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNT) have an exciton decay time of less than 1 ps and a high third-order polarizability, which is reasonably interpreted as due to their azimuthal symmetry. These experimental results reveal that a SWNT polymer composite may be a candidate material for high-quality subpicosecond all-optical switches. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: A wound-inducible cDNA, ipomoelin (IPO) was isolated from the subtraction library of sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas cv. Tainung 57) and used as a molecular probe to investigate the transduction pathway of wounding signal within plant cells. Following mechanical wounding of the leaves of sweet potato, IPO mRNA accumulation peaked at 6 h and then continuously declined. However, IPO gene expression in the apical unwounded leaves began at 6 h after wounding and continued for a further 10 h. Besides mechanical wounding, methyl jasmonate (MeJA) was identified as a signal transducer leading to the accumulation of IPO mRNA. Treatment with salicylic acid reduced the production of IPO mRNA, further supporting the involvement of the octadecanoid pathway in the signal transduction of wounding in sweet potato. In addition, ethylene was involved in the signal pathway and induced the expression of the IPO gene. Furthermore, the application of okadaic acid, a protein phosphatase inhibitor, blocked the accumulation of IPO mRNA induced by MeJA or ethylene, indicating that activation of the IPO gene by both MeJA and ethylene was via dephosphorylated proteins. The presence of a calcium ion chelator or channel blockers also inhibited the expression of the IPO gene after wounding. However, investigation by confocal scanning microscopy further pointed out that mechanical wounding rather than the application of MeJA induced the accumulation of the calcium ion. These results may indicate that the calcium ion is also involved in the activation of IPO mRNA. In addition, wounding signals the accumulation of calcium ion first and then stimulates the biosynthesis of MeJA in sweet potato. Hence, the reaction sequence of signal transducers, including the calcium ion, MeJA and protein kinase/phosphatase, in the wounding signalling pathway of sweet potato is suggested in this report.

Notizen: Rheological and gelation characteristics of a specific degree of deacetylation (dd 50 to 99) and concentration (0.5% to 1.5%) of chitosan and chitosan/SSP (salt-soluble protein) mixtures were studied. Results suggested that SSP thermal gelation was interfered with by the positive charges of amino groups of the chitosan molecule. Regardless of degree of deacetylation, increasing chitosan concentration caused stronger interference on SSP gelation and lowered complex modulus [G*]. Loss tangent of chitosan/SSP gel decreased with increasing temperature. Higher level (1.5%) of dd 99 chitosan had the lowest G*, which resulted from ionic interaction with SSP. SDS-PAGE revealed protein aggregation, indicating possible covalent bond formation.

Notizen: Abstract  Acute Respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) is a rare complication following intrathecal (IT) injection of methotrexate (MTX) in adult acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) patients. A 19-year-old man with ALL developed strikingly acute respiratory failure during central nervous system (CNS) prophylaxis with IT MTX administration and cranial irradiation. Histopathologic study of the lungs revealed a pattern of diffuse alveolar damage with interstitial cellular infiltration. His symptoms were relieved soon following treatment with corticosteroids and the pulmonary infiltrates resolved gradually. Pulmonary symptoms did not recur as he was continuously treated with oral corticosteroids.

Notizen: Abstract  Cerebral dural sinus thrombosis (CDST) is a very rare complication of acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) in adult patients. A 23-year-old man with ALL developed dizziness, headache, diplopia, limb weakness, and a sensation of fullness in his head after his second induction chemotherapy with doxorubicin, prednisolone, and vincristine. Examinations of the peripheral blood, bone marrow, and cerebrospinal fluid showed no recurrent leukemic cells. Magnetic resonance (MR) imaging of the brain disclosed unexpected CDST at the left transverse sinus, which was seen only on the fast fluid-attenuated inversion recovery (FLAIR) sequence. His symptoms were relieved soon after treatment with heparin. MR imaging with FLAIR performed a second time 7 days later showed complete disappearance of the thrombosis. The patient was treated continuously with oral anticoagulant therapy and the symptoms did not recur. CDST can be diagnosed in its early phase by MR studies with FLAIR images. Anticoagulant therapy can be administered safely without precipitating the occurrence of infarction hemorrhage at such an early stage of CDST.

Notizen: Summary A patient was admitted to our hospital with fever of unknown origin, lymphadenophathy and moderate anemia. The diagnosis of scrub typhus (tsutsugamushi disease) was established on specific serologic demonstration of antibodies to the cross-reacting proteins OX-K antigen and reaffirmed by successful treatment with doxycycline. The diagnosis of hemophagocytic syndrome (HPS) was made on the cytologic findings of many histiocytes containing phagocytosed blood cells in the marrow aspirate. The hemophagocytosis phenomenon disappeared after the scrub typhus was successfully treated, thus suggesting the relationship between scrub typhus and hemophagocytosis. In a patient with rickettsial diseases including scrub typhus, associated with HPS, it is important to understand the relationship between the two disorders since the prognosis for HPS, if untreated, is very poor.
