    Notes: Electrical conductivities were measured for methane, benzene, and polybutene shock compressed to pressures in the range 20 to 60 GPa (600 kbar) and temperatures in the range 2000 to 4000 K achieved with a two-stage light-gas gun. The data for methane and benzene are interpreted simply in terms of chemical decomposition into diamondlike, defected C nanoparticles and fluid H2 and their relative abundances (C:H2), 1:2 for methane and 2:1 for benzene. The measured conductivities suggest that conduction flows predominately through the majority species, H2 for methane and C for benzene. These data also suggest that methane is in a range of shock pressures in which dissociation increases continuously from a system which is mostly methane to one which has a substantial concentration of H2. Thermal activation of benzene conductivities at 20–40 GPa is probably caused by thermal activation of nucleation, growth, and connectivity of diamondlike, defected C nanoparticles. At 40 GPa the concentration of these C nanoparticles reaches a critical density, such that further increase in density does not have a significant affect on the cross-sectional area of conduction and, thus, conductivity saturates. The electrical conductivity of polybutene (1:1) is very low. While the mechanism is unknown, one possibility is that the electronic bandgap of whatever species are present is large compared to the temperature. Electrical conductivity measurements are proposed as a way to determine the melting curve of diamondlike C nanoparticles at 100 GPa pressures. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: A detailed histochemical analysis of the expression of the soybean small heat shock protein gene promoter, GmHSP 17·5E, fused to the GUS reporter gene, has been made in all organs and tissues of the flower as a function of stage of development and heat stress. This promoter is not uniformly expressed after a heat shock in all floral tissues and organs. Expression is seen at all stages of development in the sepals but not in the petals. The expression pattern in the pistil and in anthers is complex. Heat stress-induced GUS staining is seen in the style and upper portion of the ovary, but not in the stigmatic papillae or in the lower part of the ovary or in ovules. In stamens the heat shock response is seen in the filament and in the extension of the vascular tissue from the filament into the anther. No induction is seen in other tissues of the anther or in microspores or pollen at any stage of development. Vegetative organs in contrast are more uniform in the heat shock inducibility of GUS activity. Based on evidence from transient assays after microprojectile particle bombardment of the GmHSP 17·5E/GUS construct into pollen, it is likely that the gene is transcriptionally in an inactive configuration in pollen nuclei in stably transformed transgenic plants. These results are discussed with reference to other information in the literature.

    Notes: Aims:  The pathogenesis and clinical significance of marginal zone differentiation in follicular lymphoma remains to be determined, although genetic alterations are likely to be important determinants of both. We therefore report the cytogenetic findings in three cases of follicular lymphoma with marginal zone differentiation studied by routine karyotyping and in-situ hybridization.Methods and results:  The morphology and immunophenotype of each case was typical of follicular lymphoma displaying marginal zone differentiation. Karyotyping, performed on GTL-banded preparations of cell cultures derived from fresh lymph node tissue, revealed a complex karyotype in all three cases, including t(14;18)(q32;q21) and abnormalities associated with progression and/or transformation of follicular lymphoma. In addition, trisomy 3 was found in one case and translocations between the q27-29 region of chromosome 3 and chromosome 2 in the other two cases; the latter was identified only in subclones derived from less complex stem lines possessing t(14;18). In-situ hybridization, performed on sections cut from routinely processed paraffin-embedded tissue blocks, localized cells possessing these abnormalities of chromosome 3 to both the follicular and marginal zone components of two lymphomas studied in this way.Conclusions:  Trisomy 3 and alterations involving the q27-29 region of chromosome 3 are implicated in the pathogenesis of de novo marginal zone lymphoma. Their presence in the current cases indicates that they may also be responsible for marginal zone differentiation in follicular lymphoma when cells harbouring these genetic alterations are exposed to the appropriate microenvironment. Our findings are consistent with follicular lymphoma with marginal zone differentiation as a high-risk variant of follicular lymphoma.

    Notes: Abstract Semiempirical and ab initio theoretical methods have been used to investigate molecular structures of the chalcogen-substituted carboxylic acid isomers RC(=O)XH (chalcogenol acid) and RC(=X)OH (chalcogenon acid). A recent experimental report suggests that the chalcogenon isomers, although less stable at room temperature, predominate at low temperature in polar solvents and that there is only a small barrier to isomerization between the isomers. Theoretical calculations have been used to locate minimum energy structures of chalcogen-substituted carboxylic acid isomers and to calculate energy differences between pairs of isomers. Carboxylic acids are well known to dimerize, especially in the gas phase and in non-polar solvents. We have, therefore, also calculated energies of dimerization of the chalcogen-substituted acids by optimizing the geometries of the symmetric dimers. We note that the PM3 level of theory is only qualitatively correct for sulfur- and selenium-containing species but fails even qualitatively for the tellurium-containing compounds. Ab initio results confirm the experimental observations and provide good estimates of both isomerization and dimerization energies. We conclude that for many functional groups with tautomers RC(=X)YH and RC(=Y)XH, the more acidic tautomer is the one with the acid proton on the smaller, more electronegative atom, although in many cases this may not be the more stable tautomer.

    Notes: Abstract  In the analysis of 5’ sequence elements necessary for promoter activity in pollen various promoter- reporter gene constructs usually show similar patterns of expression in pollen when assayed by either transient transformations or after stable transformations in transgenic plants. Out of several fragment lengths of the Zm13 pollen-specific promoter linked to GUS, we found that the largest fragment (–1001 to +61) showed approximately eightfold higher expression in pollen of transgenic plants than transient transformations by microprojectile bombardment. No other promoter fragment tested showed this difference. Titration of a limited number of transcription factors by the large number of potential binding sites in this promoter fragment along with the large number of promoter copies introduced during transient transformation are possible explanations for this observation.
