    Notes: We report on a study of thin (500–4000 Å) and ultrathin (100–500 Å) yttrium–iron–garnet (YIG) films deposited onto amorphous quartz substrates by the pulsed laser deposition technique. The growth conditions of well-formed polycrystalline films have been determined. The crystalline structure and the magnetic behavior of the films are strongly influenced by the processes occurring on the film–substrate interface. Primarily, a strain due to the difference in thermal expansion coefficients of the film and substrate induces a uniaxial anisotropy. Another source of strain are lattice distortions due to oxygen vacancies. The results obtained from x-ray diffraction analysis, magneto-optical, superconducting quantum interference device, vibrating sample magnetometer, and ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) measurements indicate that films thicker than 200 Å can be approximated by a two-layer model. One of the layers with a highly distorted structure and low magnetization is located near the surface. The other one, the upper layer, can be estimated as an almost perfectly formed YIG. Their relative thickness determines the magnetic and FMR behavior of the samples. An equilibrium direction of the magnetization along the film normal has been found to occur in the ultrathin films with the lowest magnetization where the perpendicular anisotropy energy exceeds the dipolar energy. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Summary.  The present study was undertaken to evaluate stability, pharmacokinetic profile and efficacy of continuous infusion of 8Y in patients with different types of von Willebrand disease (vWD). Following reconstitution, 8Y levels of von Willebrand factor ristocetin cofactor (vWF:Rco), vWF antigen and factor VIII coagulant activity (FVIII:C) decreased to about 80% of the baseline levels; addition of low molecular weight heparin decreased the level of FVIII:C even further. Reconstituted 8Y was found to be sterile for up to 6 days postreconstitution. Ten vWD patients (four with type 2A, three with type 3, two with type 1 and one with 2N) underwent pharmacokinetic analysis. The recovery of vWF: RCo was significantly lower in patients with type 3 vWD (1.4 ± 0.05% U−1 kg−1) compared withthat of the patients with types 1 (2.3 ± 0.52% U−1 kg−1) or 2A (2.0 ± 0.06% U−1 kg−1) vWD (P = 0.015). Type 3 vWD patients exhibited significantly higher vWF:RCo clearance (5.1 ± 1.1 mL kg−1 h−1) compared with that of patients with type 2A (2.8 ± 0.7 mL kg−1 h−1) and type 1 (2.6 ± 1.0 mL kg−1 h−1) vWD (P = 0.028). Accordingly, terminal half-life was lower in patients with type 3 vWD (8.0 ± 0.6 h−1) compared with type 2A (12.7 ± 5.9 h−1) or type 1 (14 ± 1.2 h−1) vWD patients. Multimeric pattern of vWF from patients' plasma was similar to that of 8Y. In two patients treated with 8Y by continuous infusion for prevention or treatment of bleeding haemostasis was achieved. Thus, 8Y is suitable and haemostatically effective for continuous infusion treatment in patients with vWD.

    Notes: Background: Cytokine-inducible leucocyte-endothelial adhesion molecules were shown to affect the postoperative inflammatory response following cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB). Soluble P-selectin (sP-selectin) is one of these molecules. We investigated the correlation between plasma sP-selectin levels and the intra- and postoperative course in children undergoing CPB. Methods: Serial blood samples of 13 patients were collected preoperatively upon initiation of CPB and seven times postoperatively. Plasma was recovered immediately and frozen at – 70°C until use. Circulating soluble selectin molecules were measured with a sandwich enzyme-linked immunoabsorbent assay technique. Results: The significant post-CPB changes in sP-selectins plasma levels were associated with patient characteristics, operative variables and postoperative course. sP-selectin levels correlated significantly with surgery time, aortic cross-clamping time and inotropic support, as well as with the postoperative Pediatric Risk of Mortality score, hypotension and tachycardia. Conclusions: A relation between CPB-induced mediators and both early and late clinical effects is suggested. The up-regulation and expression of sP-selectin indicate neutrophil activation as a possible mechanism for the increase, and inhibiting it may reduce the inflammatory response associated with CPB.

    Notes: Echinocandin B (ECB), a lipopolypeptide used as a starting material for chemical manufacture of the anti-Candida agent LY303366, is produced by fermentation using a strain of Aspergillus nidulans. In addition to ECB, the wild-type strain also produces a significant level of sterigmatocystin (ST), a potent carcinogen structurally related to the aflatoxins. Characterization of a mutant designated A42355-OC-1 (OC-1), which is blocked in ST biosynthesis, was the result of a chromosomal translocation. The chromosomal regions containing the breakpoints of the translocation were isolated and DNA sequencing and PCR analysis of the chromosomal breakpoints demonstrated the translocation occurred within the stcW gene of the ST biosynthetic pathway, resulting in disruption of the open reading frame for this gene. Biochemical feeding studies indicate the involvement of this gene product in the conversion of averufin to 1-hydroxy versicolorone.     Notes: Abstract: Magnetic exchange coupling has been observed for ultrathin films of yttrium iron garnet (Y3Fe5O12 or YIG). Single-crystalline YIG films were prepared on yttrium aluminium garnet (Y3Al5O12 or YAG) substrates by pulsed laser deposition. (111) and (110) oriented substrates were used. Film thicknesses were varied from 180 Å to 4600 Å. Epitaxial growth of YIG on YAG was obtained in spite of the lattice mismatch of 3%. Magnetic hysteresis loops recorded for ultrathin YIG films have a “bee-waist” shape and show a coupling between two different magnetic phases. The first phase is magnetically soft YIG. A composition study by secondary ion mass spectroscopy shows the second phase to be Y3Fe5-xAlxO12 due to the interdiffusion of Fe and Al at the film/substrate interface. This compound is known to be magnetically harder and to have weaker magnetization than YIG. The coupling of the two phases leads to a hysteresis loop displacement at low temperatures. This displacement varies differently with film thickness for two substrate orientations. Assuming an interfacial coupling, the maximal interaction energy is estimated to be about 0.17 erg/cm2 at 5 K for (111) oriented sample.

    Notes: Abstract: Orthoferrites present, as bulk materials, reorientation transitions of their magnetic moment alignment at temperatures depending on the rare-earth (RE) ion. In particular, orthoferrites (REFeO3) with RE = Sm, Dy, present this transition at T SRT = 443 K and 36 K, respectively. The spectra of the complex Kerr and Faraday angle have been measured on orthoferrite thin films (RE = Sm, Dy, Y), which were prepared by pulsed laser deposition on amorphous quartz substrates. The obtained spectra exhibit contributions of both surfaces and interfaces. Propagation effects of the polarized light in the magneto-optical medium which is interpreted in terms of a simplified theoretical formalism, is also observed. For selected photon energies, temperature dependent Faraday rotation measurements, , on orthoferrite thin films (RE = Sm, Dy, Y) have been performed. A quite different thermal variation compared to the bulk magnetization has been observed. Curie temperatures are found to be close to the bulk values or slightly larger by 10 K to 20 K as in the case of DyFeO3 and YFeO3. For RE = Sm and Dy, increases with increasing temperature contrary to the saturation magnetization, passes through a maximum at about 460 K and vanishes with a T C of 647±18 K, 695 K for RE = Sm and Dy respectively.
