Abstract A nonconventional design of waveguide for a semiconductor injection laser is suggested; this design makes it possible to reduce the power density at the laser-diode mirror as a result of a more uniform distribution of the main-mode field. The second advantage of using this type of waveguide is the possibility of exerting a more pronounced suppression of lasing at high-order transverse modes. An additional advantage is that such a waveguide can accommodate several active regions separated by a large distance, so that the optical-confinement factor for them is nearly the same. The essence of the design consists in using a profile of the refractive index that decreases up to the middle of the waveguide.
