    Notes: Summary.  To investigate the molecular defects in two Chinese pedigrees with inherited factor V (FV) deficiency.A 37-year-old male (proband 1) and an 18-month-old boy (proband 2) were diagnosed as inherited coagulation FV deficiency by severely reduced plasma levels of FV activity and antigen. All 25 exons and their flanking sequence of F5 gene were amplified by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) for both probands and the PCR products were directly sequenced. Total RNA was extracted from the peripheral lymphocytes of proband 1 for detecting the changes at mRNA level.The homozygous deletion IVS8 −2A〉G was identified in the F5 gene of proband 1 and complementary DNA (cDNA) analysis revealed the abolishment of the canonical splicing site by the mutation and the activation of the cryptic acceptor site 24 bp upstream instead. The insertion introduced eight additional amino acids (AA) into the FV protein. Two heterozygous mutations of F5 gene were discovered in proband 2. The 2238-9del AG in exon 13 introduced a premature termination code at 689 AA and the substitution of G6410 by T in exon 23 lead to the missense mutation Gly2079Val.Three F5 gene mutations, IVS8 −2A〉G, 2238-9del AG and G6410T, have been identified in two Chinese pedigree with congenital FV deficiency, respectively.

    Notes: Abstract  Variations of Raman spectra of hydroxyl-clinohumite were studied up to ∼370 kbar at room temperature, and in the range 81–873 K at atmospheric pressure. With the exception of the symmetric OH-stretch bands, the Raman frequencies of all bands were observed to increase monotonically with increasing pressure, and decrease with increasing temperature. This behavior is in line with those observed for other humite members (norbergite and chondrodite) so far studied. The symmetric OH-stretching band shows a mode softening with increasing pressure, and splits into two bands at either high pressure or low temperature. In the quasihydrostatic experiment, the compression and decompression paths of one of the asymmetric OH-stretch bands form a hysteresis loop, but the same behavior was not observed in the nonhydrostatic experiment. These results indicate that the two kinds of OH groups in hydroxyl-clinohumite have nonequivalent movement paths on compression, and with one OH group experiencing a release of spatial hindrance during compression. This behavior appears to be modified by shear stress. The same complication of the OH groups was not observed in the temperature variation study. The pressure and temperature variations of the Raman frequencies for the various vibrations involving the SiO4 tetrahedra and MgO6 octahedra below ∼1000 cm−1 for clinohumite behave similarly to other hydrous magnesium silicates. On the basis of the relationship between isothermal bulk modulus and Raman data, it is suggested that the linear pressure dependences of vibrational frequencies of various Raman bands reported in the literature are inadequate.

    Notes: Abstract The disintegration of four radionuclides undergoing electron-capture decay was followed for one to ten half-lives. Least-squares analyses of the gamma-ray counting data using non-linear Taylor differential correction yielded the following half-lives: 7Be, 53.42±0.01 days; 54Mn, 312.6±0.5 days; 83Rb, 86.2±0.1 days and 84Rb, 33.1±0.1 days. These values are consistent with literature data, with comparable or much better precision than most previous determinations.
