Notes: A microinterferometric backscatter detector (MIBD) has been developed to perform subnanoliter volume refractive index measurements using a simple, folded optical train based on the interaction of a laser beam and a fused silica capillary tube. Positional changes of the interference pattern extrema (fringes) allow for the determination of Δn at the 10−7 level, corresponding to 5.3 pmole or 0.48 ng of solute, when thermal noise is controlled at 8×10−3 °C. MIBD is relatively path-length insensitive for capillaries ranging in inner diameter from 75 to 775 μm, allowing a large range of detection volumes, from 350 pL to 40 nL, to be produced. A theoretical model of the microinterferometric backscatter detector has also been developed and evaluated and has been found to be in agreement with experimental data. This model indicates increased sensitivity of the instrument as the wavelength of the probe beam and the wall thickness of the capillary tube are reduced. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract Results of calculations are presented that demonstrate the possibility of constructing two-and threecomponent coatings for wide-band interference filters for the medium infrared spectral region with characteristics that could be realized earlier only in four-component interference coatings.

Notes: Abstract Detection of a useful signal against spurious ones in a multimode optical-fiber interferometer is studied theoretically and experimentally. The theoretical analysis is based on a probabilistic approach. The computation and the experiment demonstrate that the multichannel technique can significantly reduce the probability of wrong signal detection as compared to the case of a single-channel photodiode scheme.

Notes: Abstract Multistability of the reflection coefficient as a function of incident amplitude is theoretically demonstrated to be possible for a semiinfinite optically homogeneous medium with the Kerr nonlinearity. The multistability arises at certain relations between the system parameters. The treatment is essentially free from the assumption that field envelopes vary slowly in space. Underlying physical processes are described.

Notes: Abstract The mechanisms of phase modulation of optical radiation in multimode light guides are treated, namely, the first mechanism with equal relative phase increments for all modes and the second mechanism including the mode interaction and characterized by different relative phase increments for each mode. It is demonstrated theoretically that, in the case of several modulating effects on the light guide, the behavior of signals of modal interference from each one of those effects upon variation of the parameters of the medium surrounding the fiber depends on the type of effect. The variations of signals from the effects of the first type are in full agreement. Signals from effects of the second type or of different types may vary differently. In experiments with an intermode fiber-optic interferometer 500 m long, modulators associated with the mechanism of the first type exhibited a high correlation (97%) of the behavior of signals upon drift of the light guide temperature. The variations of signals from modulators of the second type and of different types were almost uncorrelated (6 and 1%).

Notes: Abstract A scheme of an optoelectronic system built around a remote Mach-Zehnder interferometer was developed and experimentally studied. The output signal of the interferometer is detected under pseudoheterodyne conditions using the polarizing beam splitting and a sawtooth phase modulation. It is demonstrated that the system is insensitive to external noise in the forward and backward optical channels.

Notes: Abstract Influence of the angular mismatch between the hologram and the reconstructing beam in the direction perpendicular to the plane of dispersion on the efficiency of diffraction was studied. It is demonstrated that angular detuning in this direction can lead to substantial increase of the intensity of the diffracted beam if the Bragg conditions are met. The results of calculation of the “anomalous” behavior of the diffraction efficiency are in good agreement with the experimental data for holograms recorded in the layers of a photopolymer.

Notes: Abstract We define a system of ‘dynamical’ differential equations compatible with the KZ differential equations. The KZ differential equations are associated to a complex simple Lie algebra g. These are equations on a function of n complex variables z i taking values in the tensor product of n finite dimensional g-modules. The KZ equations depend on the ‘dual’ variable in the Cartan subalgebra of g. The dynamical differential equations are differential equations with respect to the dual variable. We prove that the standard hypergeometric solutions of the KZ equations also satisfy the dynamical equations. As an application we give a new determinant formula for the coordinates of a basis of hypergeometric solutions.

Notes: Abstract When a solid target is irradiated by an electron beam generated in a direct-action diode and transported to the target in a magnetic guide field, an important role belongs to electrons returned to the target as a result of multiple reflections from the target and the accelerating field region. The energy spectrum of electrons incident on the target and the deposited energy depth profile the target were studied by the Monte-Carlo method. An algorithm for calculating these characteristics was developed, based upon the method of separating the total electron flux into components with respect to the multiplicity of crossing of the target-vacuum interface.

Notes: Abstract For a multimode optical-fiber interferometer with a multichannel detector system, two alternative methods of signal processing in the presence of amplitude fading are studied theoretically and experimentally: (a) the summation of the signal magnitudes over various channels; (b) the selection of the channel whose signal modulus has the largest amplitude. It is shown that both methods can significantly reduce the signal amplitude fading at the interferometer output. A statistical model of the multimode interferometer is suggested assuming independent signal variations in different channels. For a ten-channel system with photodiode detectors, the computation and the measurements demonstrate that both variants of the data processing yield more than three-fold decrease in the ratio of the rms deviation under the fading conditions to the mean output signal.
