Notes: Lichen planus (LP) has been reported in association with chronic active hepatitis, primary biliary cirrhosis and other chronic liver diseases. The occurrence of LP in persons with hepatitis C virus (HCV) was reported by Robert et al., and the possible relationship between LP and hepatitis virus has also been supported by cases of LP following hepatitis B vaccination.Exacerbation or appearance of LP during the treatment of chronic hepatitis C, lymphoproliferative diseases and melanoma with alpha-interferon (IFN-α) and improvement of these diseases after discontinuation of this drug indicate that IFN-α may possibly induce LP.We present a case of cutaneo-mucous LP in a woman with chronic active hepatitis treated with IFN-α and in whom local leukocytoclastic vasculitis was induced by the intradermal injection of a very low dose of IFN-α.

Notes: We present a detailed study of different exchange-correlation (xc) functionals in describing the dynamical properties of finite systems. For that purpose, we calculated the static polarizabilities, ionization potentials, and optical absorption spectrum of four small clusters, Na2, Na4, SiH4, and Si2H6, using a real-space, real-time technique. The computed static polarizabilities and ionization potentials seem to be in rather good agreement with the available experimental data, once the proper asymptotics of the potential are taken into account. The same conclusion holds for the absorption spectra, although the xc kernels in use do not provide a sufficiently strong attractive interaction between electrons and holes, leading to spectra slightly shifted towards higher energies. This deficiency is traced back to the insufficient description of dynamical effects in the correlation functional. Furthermore, it is shown that the xc potential used to obtain the ground state is the key factor to get reasonable spectra, whereas the choice of the xc kernel just amounts to small, although important, quantitative changes. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract: Keratinocytes have great promise as targets for gene therapy involving both skin as well as for systemic disorders due to their availability and potential long life span. Improvement of gene transfer into keratinocytes will be greatly facilitated by markers that will allow both rapid detection and efficient selection of transduced cells. For these purposes, a recombinant version of the Aequorea victoria green fluorescent protein that is enhanced for high-level expression in mammalian cells (EGFP) was placed into a replication-deficient retroviral vector. High-titer retrovirus was used to transduce both primary cultures of neonatal foreskin-derived human keratinocytes (HK) as well as the immortalized keratinocyte-derived cell line HaCaT. Both cell types stably expressed the EGFP, and this marker allowed rapid purification of transduced cells by fluorescence-activated cell sorting. EGFP expression was seen in HaCaT keratinocytes for at least 40 passages, and the presence of this construct did not effect cell growth, or apoptosis in response to UVB or etoposide. Transduced populations of HK were grafted into SCID mice, resulting in a functional epidermis. EGFP expression was readily seen in vivo by exposing the xenografts to an ultraviolet light source. These studies demonstrate the feasibility of using EGFP as a convenient and rapid marker to monitor keratinocyte gene transfer both in vitro and in vivo.

Notes: Background:  The neural cell adhesion molecule (N-CAM) has been implicated in the behaviour of the adenoid cystic carcinoma. In vitro, it was demonstrated that N-CAM inhibits cell invasion. The aim of this study was to search for N-CAM in the most common salivary gland tumour that has a malignant counterpart. Methods:  We investigated the presence of N-CAM in pleomorphic adenoma and its malignant counterpart, the carcinoma ex-pleomorphic adenoma, using the immunohistochemistry technique. Results:  Neural cell adhesion molecule was expressed in all cases of pleomorphic adenoma, strongly labelling the luminal cells of the double-layered ductform structures. This expression was weaker in neoplastic myoepithelial cells and progressively diminished at a distance from the luminal cells. In carcinoma, ex-pleomorphic adenoma N-CAM was either totally absent or faintly present at the apical pole of the few luminal cells. Conclusions:  As a result of the peculiar distribution of N-CAM in pleomorphic adenoma, we speculated that N-CAM behaves as a tumour-suppressor molecule, which is expressed in the benign neoplasm and which is down-regulated after malignancy, when the tumour assumes an invasive behaviour.

Notes: Abstract A thorough review of the literature published (1983 – March 1999) on chromium speciation in liquid samples is presented, and analytical techniques used in the 404 articles are summarized. The discussion focuses on atomic spectrometric techniques, which are mainly employed for chromium speciation in liquid matrices (134 articles). Details on the type of pretreatment, species, samples, techniques and analytical features of the methodologies proposed are given.

Notes: Abstract. We present numerical simulations of femtosecond laser induced dynamics of some selected simple molecules -- hydrogen, singly ionized sodium dimer, singly ionized helium trimer and lithium cyanide. The simulations were performed within a real-space, real-time, implementation of time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT). High harmonic generation, Coulomb explosion and laser induced photo-dissociation are observed. The scheme also describes non-adiabatic effects, such as the appearance of even harmonics for homopolar but isotopically asymmetric dimers, even if the ions are treated classically. This TDDFT-based method is reliable, scalable, and extensible to other phenomena such as photoisomerization, molecular transport and chemical reactivity.

Notes: Copper(II) mononuclear complexes with the polyazamacrocyclic ligands NOTA (1,4,7-triazacyclononane-N,N′,N″triacetate), DOTA (1,4,7,10-tetraazacyclo-dodecane-N,N′,N″,N″′-tetraacetate), NOTP [1,4,7-triazacyclononane-N,N′,N″-tris(methylenephosphonate)] and DOTP [1,4,7,10tetraazacyclododecane-N,N′,N″,N‴-tetrakis(methylenephosphonate)] were characterised in aqueous solution by electronic absorption spectrophotometry and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy. While two isomeric species were detected by EPR spectroscopy in frozen samples of the polycarboxylate complexes, only one complex form was found for the poly(methylenephosphonate) systems. The results obtained are in accordance with a six-coordinate pattern for the metal centre, yielding tetragonally distorted complexes in solution, in agreement with previously reported studies on CuII complexes, both in solution and in the solid state.
