Notes: The study investigated the reported linkage of the locus for resistance to woolly apple aphid with the locus for incompatibility. Apple seedlings from the cross ‘Northern Spy’(heterozygous for resistance) בTotem’(susceptible) were scored for resistance, and for incompatibility genotype, by analysis of stylar ribonucleases, and for Got-1, the isoenzyme marker for incompatibility. Cosegregation analysis provided no evidence that the loci for resistance and incompatibility are linked. Two rootstock cultivars,‘M9’and ‘Merton 789′, which in early work had been reported to give poor set in crosses with ‘Northern Spy’, were found to have the same incompatibility genotype as ‘Northern Spy’, namely S1S3.‘M4’and ‘Irish Peach’, two other cultivars that had given poor set when crossed on to ‘Northern Spy’, appeared to be homozygous at the incompatibility locus and to have the genotypes S3S3 and S1S1, respectively.

Notes: Wide spectrum screening keratin as a marker of metaplastic spindle cell carcinoma of the breast: an immunohistochemical study of 24 patients Aims: Metaplastic spindle cell carcinomas may be difficult to distinguish histologically from other spindle cell lesions in the breast. Variable staining with cytokeratin immunomarkers has been reported for metaplastic carcinomas. We evaluated the diagnostic utility of anti-cytokeratin polyclonal antibody, wide spectrum screening keratin, to assess spindle cell breast lesions. Methods and results: Twenty-four patients with spindle cell breast carcinoma and 31 patients with benign or malignant spindle cell tumours were studied using a panel of antibodies directed against multiple cytokeratins (AE1/AE3, CAM5.2, wide spectrum screening keratin), epithelial membrane antigen (EMA), and vimentin. Sites of origin for the 31 controls included breast, bone, and soft tissue. All but one (95.8%) metaplastic carcinomas stained positively with wide spectrum screening keratin. Only rare or focal immunoreactivity was observed with AE1/AE3 in four cases; however, sensitivity of AE1/AE3 was improved in 13 cases using steam EDTA as an antigen retrieval technique. Three cases were immunoreactive with CAM5.2 and eight cases were immunoreactive with EMA. All control cases lacked immunoreactivity with the cytokeratin panel and EMA. The spindle cells in the metaplastic breast tumours (88%) and in the controls (97%) stained with vimentin. Conclusions: Wide spectrum screening keratin may be the most useful and convenient antibody in differentiating metaplastic spindle cell carcinoma from other spindle cell lesions in the breast.

Notes: Abstract: We study the full probability distribution of the charge transmitted through a mesoscopic diffusive conductor during a measurement time Δ. We have considered a semi-classical model, with an exclusion principle in a discretized single-particle phase-space. In the large Δ limit, numerical simulations show a universal probability distribution which agrees very well with the quantum mechanical prediction of Lee et al. [Phys. Rev. B 51, 4079 (1995)] for the charge counting statistics. Special attention is given to its third cumulant, including an analysis of finite size effects and of some experimental constraints for its accurate measurement.

Notes: Abstract: We have performed noise measurements on suspended ropes of single wall carbon nanotubes (SWNT) between 1 and 300 K for different values of dc current through the ropes. We find that the shot noise is suppressed by more than a factor 100 compared to the full shot noise 2eI. We have also measured an individual SWNT and found a level of noise which is smaller than the minimum expected. Another finding is the very low level of 1/f noise, which is significantly lower than previous observations. We propose two possible interpretations for the strong shot noise reduction: i) Transport within a rope takes place through few nearly ballistic tubes within a rope and possibly involves non integer effective charges with e *∼ 0.3e. ii) A substantial fraction of the tubes conduct with a strong reduction of effective charge (by more than a factor 50).

Notes: Abstract: In Rayleigh Bénard experiments, the side wall conductivity is traditionally taken into account by subtracting the empty cell heat conductivity from the measured one. We present a model showing that the correction to apply could be considerably larger. We compare to experiments and find good agreement. One of the consequences is that the Nusselt behavior for Ra 〈 1010 could be closer to Nu∝Ra 1/3 than currently assumed. Also, the wall effect can appear as a continuous change in the γ exponent Nu∝Ra γ.

Notes: Abstract. The spin asymmetry arising in an (e,2e) process using spin-polarized incoming electrons with non-relativistic energies is shown to be dominated by the fine structure effect if a suitable kinematical regime is chosen. Calculations in the distorted wave Born approximation (DWBA) for both the triple differential cross-section and the spin asymmetry are presented for the inner shell ionization of argon. This process would provide an accessible target for existing experimental set-ups.
