Notes: Energies associated with deviations from stoichiometry for an extensive series of A2B2O7 pyrochlores have been predicted. A3+ cations range in size from Lu to La and B4+ cations from Ti to Pb. Results are presented in the form of contour maps as a means of conveying large quantities of data as well as predicting characteristics for pyrochlore compounds not explicitly modeled. These contour maps indicate that the BO2 excess nonstoichiometry in the pyrochlore structure is distinct from solid-solution fluorite. Within the limitations of this methodology, the contour maps provide a means to understand and predict distinct compositional variations. Defect cluster formation is discussed.

Notes: Within the series of A2O3-HfO2 phase diagrams (A ranges in cationic radius from Lu3+ to La3+), only those from Gd2Hf2O7 to La2Hf2O7 are known to exhibit a pyrochlore phase field. For A cations smaller than Gd3+, only a disordered fluorite phase field exists. Disorder energies for the entire series of pyrochlore oxides have been determined via atomistic simulation. These energies can be correlated to the order-disorder temperatures from the phase diagrams. Consequently, we predict the existence of hitherto unobserved pyrochlores: Dy2Hf2O7, Ho2Hf2O7, and Er2Hf2O7.

Notes: PRECH, M., et al.: Effect of Restoration of AV Synchrony on Stroke Volume, Exercise Capacity, and Quality-of-Life: Can We Predict the Beneficial Effect of a Pacemaker Upgrade? The aim of this study was to assess to what extent patients with VVIR pacemakers and without overt symptoms of a pacemaker syndrome benefit from a pacemaker upgrade, and if a preoperative noninvasive measurement of the change in stroke volume (SV) could predict the effect of a pacemaker upgrade. The study group consisted of 20 (12 women, 8 men) VVIR patients with a mean age of 60 years. The indication for the first implantation was AV block in 13 patients and SSS in 7. The mean time of a ventricular pacing was 77 months. The objective (echocardiography, an exercise capacity) and the subjective (the quality-of-life) parameters investigated in patients during ventricular pacing were compared to results obtained 2 months and 1 year after a pacemaker upgrade. To assess preoperatively a change in a SV expected after upgrading, attempts were made to restore AV synchronization by the use of a transesophageal pacemaker. An increase in SV (from 5% to 〉 35%) during temporary AV resynchronization was observed in each patient. Values of SV increase correlated with those obtained 2 months (r = 0. 65; P 〈 0.01) and 1 year (r = 0.66; P 〈 0.01) after an upgrade. Superior hemodynamics was associated with a significant improvement of an exercise capacity in both subgroups of patients. The most significant improvement in the quality-of-life was observed in patients with SSS. We did not find correlations between SV and the quality-of-life assessed 2 months (r = 0.043; NS) or 1 year (r = 0.02; NS) after an upgrade. In conclusion, a pacemaker upgrade performed after a long-term ventricular pacing resulted almost consistently in the improvement of hemodynamics and was associated with an increase of exercise capacity. In patients with SSS it was followed by the significant improvement of their quality-of-life. Such a relation was not observed in patients with AV block as some of them (especially those with VVIR pacemakers) felt quite well during ventricular pacing. The proposed preoperative echocardiographic evaluation may precisely predict the degree of hemodynamic improvement expected after a pacemaker upgrade.

Notes: Ingestion of contaminated soil by children may result in significant exposure to toxic substances at contaminated sites. Estimates of such exposure are based on extrapolation of short-term-exposure estimates to longer time periods. This article provides daily estimates of soil ingestion on 64 children between the ages of 1 and 4 residing at a Superfund site; these values are employed to estimate the distribution of 7-day average soil ingestion exposures (mean, 31 mg/day; median, 17 mg/day) at a contaminated site over different time periods. Best linear unbiased predictors of the 95th-percentile of soil ingestion over 7 days, 30 days, 90 days, and 365 days are 133 mg/day, 112 mg/day, 108 mg/day and 106 mg/day, respectively. Variance components estimates (excluding titanium and outliers, based on Tukey's far-out criteria) are given for soil ingestion between subjects (59 mg/day)2, between days on a subject (95 mg/day)2, and for uncertainty on a subject-day (132 mg/day)2. These results expand knowledge of potential exposure to contaminants among young children from soil ingestion at contaminated sites. They also provide basic distributions that serve as a starting point for use in Monte Carlo risk assessments.

Notes: A 64-year-old woman presented with bullous and ulcerating lichen sclerosus et atrophicus (LSA) on the neck, trunk, genital and perigenital area and the extremities. Histology of lesional skin showed the typical manifestations of LSA; in one of the biopsies spirochaetes were detected by silver staining. Despite treatment with four courses of ceftriaxone with or without methylprednisone for up to 20 days, progression of LSA was only stopped for a maximum of 1 year. Spirochaetes were isolated from skin cultures obtained from enlarging LSA lesions. These spirochaetes were identified as Borrelia afzelii by sodium dodecyl sulphate–polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) analyses. However, serology for B. burgdorferi sensu lato was repeatedly negative. After one further 28-day course of ceftriaxone the lesions stopped expanding and sclerosis of the skin was diminished. At this time cultures for spirochaetes and PCR of lesional skin for B. afzelii DNA remained negative. These findings suggest a pathogenetic role for B. afzelii in the development of LSA and a beneficial effect of appropriate antibiotic treatment.

Notes: Monetary unification within Europe appears to be on target. Eleven nations pegged their currency to the euro in 1999. The euro-zone is experiencing varying levels of growth related to GDP. Balancing policy for 11 nations will be difficult. The true test will take place when asymmetric shocks hit one or several of the nations and unemployment rises to unmanageable levels forcing the European Union and European Central Bank to make tough decisions. Cultural issues and national identities are ever present. Optimum currency areas and comparative advantage discussed. The paper is divided into four major sections - reasons for unification, benefits, issues and conclusion.

Notes: Multinational corporations need to recognize the importance of international management development. Formal human resource programs, tied to business objectives, need to be established. Ignoring the importance of global management development leads to missed market opportunities. Understanding and support at the executive level is a necessity. Human resource information systems need to include international data elements to help in the identification of candidates. Training budgets have to shift course work from a domestic focus to multicultural and international marketplace issues. The home and host managers must agree to the objectives for the employee prior to the assignment start. Repatriation assignments must align with the experience.

Notes: Alliances have been the focus of research studies often because they offer an attractive alternative to traditional arrangements. With a global economy, rapid product cycles, capital constraints and advances in technology, no one firm has all the capability to maintain and grow market share. Factors such as these are leading firms to consider different forms of partnerships including alliances. Contemporary alliance research is often segmented by types of arrangements, durations, returns, failures and best practices. Studies that evaluate and rank specific alliance criteria are somewhat limited. To explore specific alliance risk and value variables a study was conducted at a large manufacturing organization with extensive alliance history. A questionnaire was developed and distributed that contained both ordinal and scale rankings of specific alliance value and risk criteria. The aggregate responses were prioritized and a weight was assigned allowing for quantitative assessment for both alliance value and risk. The information was later converted into an alliance value/risk check sheet to be used to rank multiple projects.

Notes: Mentoring programs are enjoying a renewed interest as corporations grapple with how to collect and disseminate their collective knowledge across functions and regions in an effort to rapidly innovate and maintain competitive advantage. Global mentoring programs can help support training and development programs by matching mentors and protégés from different cultures, encouraging information exchange and connection with employees from other regions. Issues discussed here include time dimensions, languages, cultural biases, program perceptions, training costs and administration.

Notes: The rapid advancement in information and communication technologies (ICTs) has brought enormous business opportunities as well as challenges. One of these challenges is the demand for ICTs skills and expertise in adopting and implementing these emerging technologies. Coping with skills shortage poses a serious challenge across all European countries. Lack of ICTs skills and knowledge is more evident in small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). As training is regarded as the most effective way of improving skills and enhancing knowledge, this paper attempts to address skills shortage at pan-European level by identifying SMEs' needs on ICTs training in the UK, Portugal and Poland. The investigation focuses on the most needed training areas, the required training levels and the preferred training delivery channels. The paper summarises findings from three-country investigations and highlights the implications of findings for the design and development of a Web-based training system for the use of ICTs in SMEs.
