    Notes: The recruitment crisis in nursing: placing Irish psychiatric nursing in context — a review There is a decline in recruitment to pre-registration programmes in psychiatric nursing in Ireland. This article discusses factors that may relate to the Irish situation in the context of relevant international literature on nurse recruitment. It is noted that disciplines and courses in Ireland, such as social care, that engage in similar work to that of psychiatric nurses do not suffer from such a shortage of applicants. Whilst it is difficult to account for this difference, a number of factors identified from the literature are discussed. The need to highlight differences with general nursing and the importance of career guidance are seen as important in overcoming prejudices and stereotypes. From a review of the literature it appears that studies dedicated to recruitment to psychiatric nursing alone are notable by their paucity, and absent in the case of Ireland. Therefore, the available literature fails to fully explain the fall in psychiatric nurse recruitment compared to the robust recruitment position of social care. It is argued that dedicated research on recruitment to psychiatric nursing within an Irish setting is needed if a sustainable recruitment policy is to be implemented to reverse the long-term decline in recruitment.

    Notes: The application of a three-dimensional finite-element computer program package, TLM-FOOD-HEATING (FAUSTUS Scientific Corp., Victoria, Canada), on the simulation of capacitive radio frequency (RF) dielectric heating of radish and alfalfa seeds was investigated. Seeds placed inside polystyrene boxes were described as a rectangle, where nonuniform boundary conditions presented complications in the simulation. Temperature and moisture dependent thermal properties and temperature and frequency dependent dielectric properties of seeds were considered in the modeling. the time-temperature profiles of seeds at different locations within the rectangle seeds boxes were simulated. the model was then validated using experimental data. Simulated temperature distribution in seeds was consistent with the measured results. the absolute temperature differences between simulated and measured values in radish seeds packed in a 100 × 25 × 50 mm rectangle seeds box were 1.8C, 1.1C, 8.9C, and 13.6C in the center, top, edge, and bottom locations, respectively, when seeds reached about 80C, and were 0.9C, 2.4C, 7.75C, and 14.3C, respectively, in alfalfa seeds box in the same conditions.

    Notes: Background.  Violence in nursing is not a new phenomenon but in recent years much greater emphasis has been placed on the problem in the United Kingdom (UK). A number of official reports, media stories and national initiatives have focused attention on the problem in this country. However, it is not clear whether violence and abuse have in fact become more prevalent. At present little is known about the scale of the problem for general nurses working in general hospitals in the UK. Aim of the study.  A realistic assessment of the scale of this problem should facilitate a meaningful debate about the interventions needed to counter it and support the requests for funding that will be required. This study aimed to establish the utility of existing research findings, to include relevant but previously unused sources and to synthesize the results. Method.  A systematic search of the literature pertinent to the aim of the study was followed by a critical review. The focus was on research originating in the UK, including some general research on occupational violence which included data on nurses. Findings.  Overall, the research findings are limited. The best available evidence suggests nurses as a whole do face a high level of risk compared with all workers and this excess risk holds for general nurses. The data support a figure of more than 9·5% of general nurses working in general hospitals assaulted (with or without injury) in any 1 year. Trends over time are impossible to identify at present. Conclusions.  Efforts to combat the problem should include greater emphasis on the problem outside accident and emergency departments, prioritizing preregistration training in the management of aggression, and further research. Better reporting should also be a priority.

    Notes: Capacitive (Radio Frequency) dielectric heating has great potential for achieving rapid and uniform heating patterns in foods, providing safe, high quality food products. This review describes and discusses the major technology behind capacitive (RF) dielectric heating in food processing and preservation, the current applications of the technology in the industry, the potential use of mathematical modeling for heating system design, and the major challenges facing the use of this technology in food processing. A vast amount of work is still necessary to further understand the dielectric properties of both food and packaging materials in order to refine system design and maximize performance of this technology in the field of packaged food products. Various economic studies will also play an important role in understanding the overall cost and viability of commercial application of this technology in food processing.
