Abstract The aim of this contribution is twofold. First, we formulate a continuum model of the elastic cellular medium having a plane periodic structure of an arbitrary lay-out. Second, we apply this model to the analysis of wave propagation and vibration problems in a regular hexagonal (honeycomb) structure. The proposed approach makes it possible to investigate the cell size effect on the global dynamic behaviour of the medium under consideration. It is shown that the overall response of a honeycomb structure is transversaly isotropic and that two special kinds of long waves can propagate in the unbounded medium. The physical correctness and the scope of applicability of the obtained results are discussed.
