    Notes: Simultaneous synthesis and sintering of hexagonal α-Ti1−x-Alx(N) (0 ≤x≤ 0.08) solid solutions, which contain a small amount of nitrogen, have been performed by a self-propagating high-temperature combustion method under a nitrogen pressure of 4 MPa. Dense materials (∼99% of theoretical) prepared directly from a mixture of elemental (Ti and Al) powders reveal homogeneous microstructure composed of fine grains (12–16 μm). α-Ti1−xAlx(N) (x= 0.02; Ti0.98Al0.02N0.26) exhibits a three-point bending strength σb of 390 MPa, a Vickers hardness Hv of 9.24 GPa, and a fracture toughness KIC of 4.89 MPa·m1/2; their mechanical properties are much improved by doping Al into α-Ti(N), in comparison with those (σb= 245 MPa, Hv= 9.02 GPa, and KIC= 3.77 MPa·m1/2) of α-Ti(N) fabricated under the same conditions.

    Notes: Intermetallic CoAl powder has been prepared via self-propagating high-temperature synthesis (SHS). Dense CoAl materials (99.6% of theoretical) with the combined additions of ZrO2(3Y) and Al2O3 have been fabricated via spark plasma sintering (SPS) for 10 min at 1300°C and 30 MPa. The microstructures are such that tetragonal ZrO2 (0.3 μm) and Al2O3 (0.5 μm) particles are located at the grain boundaries of the CoAl (8.5 μm) matrix. Improved mechanical properties are obtained; especially the fracture toughness and the bending strength of the materials with ZrO2(3Y)/Al2O3= 16/4 mol% are 3.87 MPa·m1/2 and 1080 MPa, respectively, and high strength (〉600 MPa) can be retained up to 1000°C.

    Notes: NiAl/10-mol%-ZrO2(3Y) composites of almost full density have been fabricated via spark plasma sintering (SPS) for 10 min at 1300°C and 30 MPa. The former intermetallic compound, which contains a trace amount of Al2O3, has been prepared via self-propagating high-temperature synthesis. The composite microstructures are such that tetragonal ZrO2 (∼0.2 μm) and Al2O3 (∼0.5 μm) particles are located at the grain boundaries of the NiAl (∼46 μm) matrix. Improved mechanical properties are obtained: the fracture toughness and bending strength are 8.8 MPa·m1/2 and 1045 MPa, respectively, and high strength (〉800 MPa) can be retained up to 800°C.

    Notes: CrN powder consisting of granular particles of ∼3 μm has been prepared by self-propagating high-temperature synthesis under a nitrogen pressure of 12 MPa using Cr metal. Dense pure CrN ceramics and CrN/ZrO2(2Y) composites in the CrN-rich region have been fabricated by hot isostatic pressing for 2 h at 1300°C and 196 MPa. The former ceramics have a fracture toughness (KIC) of 3.3 MPa ·m1/2 and a bending strength (σb) of 400 MPa. In the latter materials almost all of the ZrO2(2Y) grains (0.36–0.41 μm) are located in the grain boundaries of CrN (∼4.6 μm). The values of KIC (6.1 MPa · m1/2) and σb (1070 MPa) are obtained in the composites containing 50 vol% ZrO2(2Y).

    Notes: Abstract When recording daily urine volumes for the frequency–volume chart, a patient must measure voided urine volume throughout the whole day. Unless the patient stays at home, the conventional 500-mL paper or plastic cup must be carried with at all times, which can be very embarrassing and troublesome for the patient, so a collapsible, portable measuring cup has been developed. To determine the measuring accuracy of the new cup, the visual estimate was compared with the actual volume. The cup was found to be a highly accurate and useful container for measuring voided urine volume.

    Notes: The cmp operon of Synechococcus sp. strain PCC 7942, encoding a high-affinity bicarbonate transporter, is induced under low CO2 conditions by a LysR family protein CmpR. CmpR was found to be required also for induction of the operon by transfer of the cells from low-light to high-light conditions, indicating involvement of a common mechanism in the high-light- and low-CO2-responsive regulation. Expression of the high-light inducible genes psbAII and psbAIII, on the other hand, was found to be induced also by low-CO2 conditions. A single promoter was responsible for the high-light and low-CO2 induction of each of psbAII and psbAIII, suggesting involvement of a common regulatory mechanism in the light and CO2 responses of the psbA genes. CmpR was, however, not required for the induction of psbAII and psbAIII, indicating the presence of multiple mechanisms for induction of genes under high-light and low-CO2 conditions. The CmpR-deficient mutant nevertheless showed lower levels of the psbAII and psbAIII transcripts than the wild-type strain under all the light and CO2 conditions examined. Gel shift assays showed that CmpR binds to the enhancer elements of psbAII and psbAIII, through specific interaction with a sequence signature conforming to the binding motif of similar LysR family proteins. These findings showed that CmpR acts as a trans-acting factor that enhances transcription of the photosystem II genes involved in acclimation to high light, revealing a complex network of gene regulation in the cyanobacterium.

    Notes: Background : Liver dysfunction is a frequent complication that arises in the period following kidney transplantations, often resulting in death. We reported a case proving hemosiderosis as a cause of prolonged liver dysfunction after cadaveric kidney transplantation.〈section xml:id="abs1-2"〉〈title type="main"〉 Methods :A 47-year-old man, who had been undergoing hemodialysis, was referred to our hospital on 2 November 1999. On the same day, cadaveric kidney transplantation was performed, and serum creatinine level reached a normal level within 2 weeks after surgery. However, serum transaminase gradually increased in the postoperative period. Serum ALT rose up to 116 IU/L on day 20 after the operation and 215 IU/L on day 30. Microscopic examination by needle biopsy revealed hemosiderosis of the liver. Recombinant human erythropoietin was administered and phlebotomy was performed. Liver function improved as a result.〈section xml:id="abs1-3"〉〈title type="main"〉 Conclusion :Early histological diagnosis can be a useful marker in predicting the course of chronic liver disease.

    Notes: Purpose: To clarify the functional relationship between M2 muscarinic receptor and Ca2+-activated K+ channel, we investigated the effect of carbachol (CCh) on the membrane current of rat bladder smooth muscle cells.Methods: Rat bladder single smooth muscle cells were patch clamped with whole-cell configuration.Results: CCh (10 µmol/L) transiently induced an outward current in the presence of K+ in the pipette solution. A high Ca2+ concentration in the pipette solution persistently induced an outward current, which was inhibited by CCh. In the presence of M2 inhibitor, AFDX-384, CCh induced the outward current persistently, indicating that M2 was involved in the current inhibition. In pertussis toxin pretreated cells, CCh did not apparently inhibit the outward current. The CCh-induced outward current was inhibited by iberiotoxin, a selective inhibitor of large-conductance Ca2+-activated K+ channels (BKCa).Conclusion: CCh induces BKCa, which is inhibited by M2- and Gi-mediated signal transduction pathway. This M2-mediated pathway may enhance contraction which is initiated by M3-stimulation in rat bladder smooth muscle.

    Notes: Cr2N, CrN, and their mixtures (with desired fractions) have been prepared via self-propagating high-temperature synthesis (SHS) under a controlled nitrogen pressure, followed by hot isostatic pressing at 1300°C and 196 MPa under an atmosphere of argon gas. The combustion temperature increased as the nitrogen pressure increased. Single-phase Cr2N was formed at 1040°C under a pressure of 0.18 MPa, and single-phase CrN was formed at 1730°C under a pressure of 2 MPa. The mechanical properties of the dense nitride ceramics (99.2% of the theoretical density) have been examined; the Vickers hardness (11.2 GPa for CrN and 14.5 GPa for Cr2N) increased linearly as the fraction of Cr2N increased, whereas the fracture toughness (∼4.7 MPa·m1/2) and bending strength (∼355 MPa) are constant, regardless of the fraction of Cr2N/CrN.

    Notes: A simple process for depositing a coating of silicon carbide (SiC) crystallites ∼10 nm in size onto diamond particles has been developed. SiO powders react with diamond in a vacuum at 1350°C to form a uniform β-SiC polycrystalline layer ∼60 nm thick. The SiC coating improves the oxidation resistance of the diamond. A cemented carbide material containing 20-vol%-SiC-coated diamond particles was sintered to a relative density of 99.5% by pulsed-electric-current sintering. A Vickers hardness and indentation fracture toughness of 15 GPa and 16.3 MPa·m1/2, respectively, were obtained. This toughness is two times higher than that of cemented carbide containing no particles. The higher toughness is attributed to deflection and blockage of crack propagation by the diamond particles.
