    Notes: The Hf-added FeRuGaSi alloy film has an amorphous structure in the as-deposited state and becomes nanocrystalline after annealing. Due to this structure change from crystalline to amorphous by the addition of Hf, soft magnetic degradation of the film deposited on the slant grooved substrate, which is necessary for the sophisticated embedded thin film (ETF) head structure, is greatly suppressed and the undesirable film stress is relieved. The FeRuGaSi-Hf alloy film has higher resistivity and permeability at high frequencies than those of sendust film, and the read/write characteristics of this alloy film show better performance than sendust film. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The magnetic properties and magnetostriction in grain-oriented (TbxDy1−x)(Fe1−yMny)1.95 compounds with 0.3≤x≤0.5, 0≤y≤0.2 prepared by the Bridgman method have been investigated. It is confirmed that the Mn substitution not only lowers the spin reorientation temperature but also enhances λ〈100〉. This large λ〈100〉 is contradictory to the single-ion model. For Tb0.5Dy0.5 (Fe0.9Mn0.1)1.95 compound, no spin reorientation, which induces the sharp drop in the magnetostriction is seen in the temperature range from 77 to 400 K. In addition, by choosing the appropriate compressive stress, the quite excellent thermal stability and the large magnetostriction of 2000 ppm in the low applied field can be realized in the Tb0.5Dy0.5 (Fe0.9Mn0.1)1.95 compound. These features make Tb0.5Dy0.5 (Fe0.9Mn0.1)1.95 a promising material applicable to the various giant magnetostrictive actuators.

    Notes: A broadband near-infrared pulse covering 700 nm around 2.4 μm has been generated by a dispersion-free parametric mixing in a KTiOPO4 crystal between the fundamental pulse (0.8 μm) from a Ti:sapphire regenerative amplifier and the white continuum pulse. It is tunable within the wavelength region of 1.7–2.9 μm. The comparison with a theoretical bandwidth indicates that the noncollinear phase matching plays a part for the spectral broadening.

    Notes: Line-focus-beam (LFB) acoustic microscopy is applied to quantitative characterization of piezoelectric LiNbO3 crystals to demonstrate the usefulness of this new analytical technique. Experimental relations between chemical composition ratios of Li/Nb and leaky surface acoustic wave (LSAW) velocities for 128°YX LiNbO3 wafers are determined. LSAW velocity measurements are carried out for commercial wafers obtained from a series of crystal growths. Small changes of 0.092% are detected due to the compositional variation. It is estimated that the "effective'' congruent composition in the production line is 48.440 Li2O mol% with the density of 4647.4 kg/m3.

    Notes: Magnetization distributions of four-magnetic-layer (0.5 μm/layer) strips (300×50 μm2) are observed on the top and side planes using a spin-polarized scanning electron microscope. From the domain images of the side planes, the magnetization direction of each magnetic layer is studied. The strips do not always show the predicted energy minimum magnetic structure, in which the magnetization direction alternates layer by layer.

    Notes: The line-focus-beam acoustic microscope system is applied to investigate the elastic properties of LiTaO3. Elastic inhomogeneities are detected quantitatively as a significant variation of leaky surface acoustic wave (LSAW) velocities in X-112.2°Y LiTaO3 wafers. Large changes, about 2.5%, in LSAW velocities are observed in some wafers, which correspond to a difference between the velocities for single and multidomains. One of the causes is found to be in the poling process during wafer fabrication.

    Notes: A radiation pyrometer in conjunction with a two-stage light gas gun has been used to measure shock temperatures of soda-lime glass in the pressure range 54–109 GPa. This pyrometer consists of two parts, i.e., an optical multichannel analyzer which measures the radiation spectrum over the visible range (∼450 nm window) and a four-channel photomultiplier tube system which records the time-varying behavior of shock temperatures. The measured radiation spectra are compared with the Planck function to estimate the shock temperatures and emissivities. Obtained spectra are well fit by the Planck function with moderate emissivities, indicating that relatively homogeneous thermal radiation is the main component of radiation. Obtained shock temperatures range from 2800 (100) to 5700 (300) K and they seem to represent shock temperatures of liquefied soda-lime glass (melt). The Hugoniot is well described by a linear relation, us=0.14(21)+1.92(5)up km/s. It is deduced that the radiation from liquids under shock compression, in contrast to the radiation from solids under shock compression, is more thermal and fits the Planck function well, even at lower temperatures. This is because the radiation spectrum of solids under compression often shows nonthermal radiation due to heterogeneous deformation, while the radiation spectrum of liquids under compression could not have such a nonthermal component. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The magnetic properties of iron atoms implanted into a sapphire crystal at a dose from 4×1016 to 1×1017 Fe/cm2 were investigated using conversion electron Mössbauer spectroscopy at low temperature. It was confirmed that the components in the Mössbauer spectra which have been assigned to the Fe4+ state so far by other researchers are caused by fine particles of metallic iron, and about 75% of the implanted iron atoms stabilize in the form of fine particles of α iron at high implantation dose. Growth of the fine particles was simulated with a computer, and the expected Mössbauer spectra were calculated considering the influence of the nearest neighbors and next-nearest neighbors on the magnetic hyperfine field of the iron atoms. The simulated spectra agrees well with the experimentally observed spectra on the whole. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The effect of ion implantation on recrystallization of films has been investigated using AlNx (x〈1) films as targets. The 750 A(ring) AlNx (x〈1) films were deposited on Si(111), glassy carbon, and commercial glass by an activated reactive evaporation method in a nitrogen atmosphere. The 80 keV N+ implantations were carried out near room temperature with doses ranging from 5×1016 to 5×1017 N+ions/cm2 at 1×10−6 Torr. The x-ray diffraction patterns revealed that N implantation enhances a (002) orientation of AlN, growth of which depends on doses. The optical transmittance of the AlNx films is also improved by N implantation, depending on doses. N implantation into AlNx (x〈1) even without any annealing is effective for recrystallization of the films, which leads to improvement of optical properties.

    Notes: High performance thin-film heads for disk drive systems have been developed based on a dry process. Heads were computer simulated and optimal design was carried out. Relationships among Ni-Fe composition, domain structure and wiggle of the read-write waveform were obtained. Based on these results, optimum Ni-Fe composition range was determined. A planarization procedure for an inbedding insulator of the conductor coil was developed. Also narrow track patterning and gap depth controlling procedures were developed. Using these procedures, a two-layered seventeen-turn thin-film head for a large capacity disk drive system (23 Mb/in.2) has been developed. The head exhibited excellent read-write characteristics.
