Notes: Experimental studies were conducted on the elastic-plastic deformation of the surface and inner layers of the metallic glass (MG) Co77Fe4Cr7Si8B4 ribbon using the indentation method. It was established that the elastic-plastic properties of the surface and inner layers of the amorphous samples differ considerably. Elastic recovery of the hardness indentation in the surface layers of the amorphous alloy does not exist within the limits of the experimental error (at the depth of deformation up to 0.7 μm) and it gradually increases with increase of the depth of indentation. The effect of the "advantageous'' plasticity (or "superplasticity'') of the surface layers is observed only in as-quenched MG samples with a low concentration of crystallization centers. An increase in the volume of the crystalline phases in the amorphous matrix, when annealed in the temperature range characteristic of the process of structural relaxation, results in the appearance and considerable growth of the elastic recovery of the hardness indentation in the surface layers of the MG ribbon.

Notes: A technique of carbon film synthesis based on an electrochemical process was developed. A solution of acetylene in liquid ammonia was employed as the electrolyte. Films were deposited at the metallic anode. Two types of films were produced. Films of type I are transparent and fragile, whereas those of type II are black and plastic. The films were investigated by the electron diffraction method and Raman spectroscopy. The electron diffraction data for type I films demonstrate the films' high degree of crystallinity. Values of lattice plane spacings agree with data on cubic diamond modifications. The Raman spectrum of type I films shows a line at 1334 cm−1 (full width at half-maximum equal to 15 cm−1), inherent in that of diamond and an essentially amorphous carbon component. Spectra of the type II films do not feature the Raman peak of diamond. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Electronic properties of (100), (110), and (111) oriented H-terminated silicon quantum-size wires have been calculated within the self-consistent LCAO method. The quantum confinement induced direct band gap only appears in the (100) wires. Surface silicon d and p electrons are found to be responsible for the bottom of the conduction band while the top of the valence band are formed by p electrons of the core atoms. Possible reconstruction of the wire surface is discussed. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Electronic properties of both nanometer thickness (111) monocrystalline and nanocrystalline free standing silicon films were calculated within a self-consistent linear combination of atomic orbitals method. Grained nature of the nanocrystalline films is found to induce both a direct band gap and its reduction (down to about 2 eV) with respect to an isolated grain of same size. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The quasielastic light scattering (QELS) of poly(methyl methacrylate) was measured as a function of both temperature and free monomer concentration, which was varied by heating. The motion responsible for the QELS is not thermally activated (i.e., the corresponding relaxation time is independent of temperature), while the QELS intensity is strongly temperature dependent and proportional to the monomer concentration. The QELS is interpreted as due to a rapid localized motion released by thermally activated slow structural relaxation, which can create free volume. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: A model of the low-frequency Raman scattering intensity in glasses is proposed, which describes the spectrum in the region of the boson peak, typical of glasses. The model considers the boson peak as a result of first-order light scattering by harmonic quasilocalized vibrations. The amplitude, frequency, and polarization dependence of the light on the vibrational coupling coefficient C(ω) are estimated. The model predicts a linear frequency dependence of C(ω) in the region of the boson peak and the depolarization ratio as a function of the relative contribution of the longitudinal and transverse-type motions which comprise these quasilocal vibrational modes. Low-frequency Raman and Brillouin measurements have been made on SiO2 glass in order to check the predictions of the model regarding the amplitude and integrated intensity of the boson peak. The estimated ratio of these values to those of the Brillouin lines are in good agreement with experiment. Comparison of the theoretical and experimental values of the depolarization ratio for the boson peak shows a predominance of the transverse-type atomic motions in the low-frequency quasilocalized vibrational modes in glasses. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Quasielastic light scattering (QLS) in the frequency interval 100–1000 GHz is measured in some polymers: polycarbonate, polybutadiene, polystyrene, and poly(methyl methacrylate). To describe the spectra, a model of the fast picosecond relaxation processes responsible for the QLS, which is based on the damping of the boson peak vibrations by the dynamic hole volume fluctuations, is used. Within the frame of the model, the intensity of the fast relaxation process is proportional to the fractional dynamic hole volume (which above the glass transition temperature Tg is known as the fractional free volume). The hole volumes can be measured using the positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy (PALS). The comparison of the literature PALS data in the four polymers with the QLS shows an apparent correlation between the relaxation strength and the fractional dynamic hole volume in good agreement with the predictions of the model. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract Theories beyond standard model enhance enormously Higgs boson pair production at threshold that can be studied at SSC, LHC or LEP-2. This process can test the existence of non-standard physics at much higher energy. We analyze the constraints on Higgs boson production imposed by non-standard physics.

Notes: Abstract We develop the technique for calculating interference effects in the effective-W boson method. We find that these effects produce a very large azimuthal asymmetry for single Higgs boson production, which could be used as identification of the process. We also find that the cross section of Higgs boson pair production strongly depends on Higgs self-interaction, and for non-standard models of Higgs bosons could be 5 or 10 times larger than in the case of the standard one.

Notes: Abstract It is shown that the application of an external electric field during helium ion bombardment of yttrium-stabilized zirconium dioxide single crystals may have a substantial influence on the processes accompanying the radiation-stimulated recovery of yttrium-stabilized zirconium dioxide: its n-type conductivity and refractive index may vary, and metallic nanosize inclusions may appear in the yttrium-stabilized zirconium dioxide matrix.
