Notes: Elizabeth Falconer Hall, adviser for special needs, Wiltshire LEA, suggests a variety of ways of assessing the curriculum and assessing pupils so that tasks can be matched to learners. The emphasis is on formative and diagnostic assessment but summative assessment is also discussed.

Notes: Sprague Dawley rats, previously infected with Phase-I Bordetella pertussis, developed more severe abnormal respiratory sounds than normal animals, but not coughing, when exposed to aerosolized capsaicin, one of several cough-inducing agents tested. Stethoscope examination suggested that greater production of pulmonary mucus might be occurring after capsaicin challenge of the infected animals, compared to the uninfected controls. Rats of three other strains gave characteristically different responses from the Sprague Dawleys. The administration of capsaicin to B. pertussis-infected rats may provide useful insights into the pathophysiology of excess mucus secretion in human pertussis.

Notes: Abstract Information from theoretical models of redox enzyme linked biosensors highlights the importance of membrane thickness and enzyme loading on signal response in regard to both sensitivity and reproducibility. The conclusions are substantiated by examination of practical examples in the literature and, with a view to the importance of the character of the enzyme layer and overlayers, immobilization techniques are assessed which are in current use.

Notes: Abstract While the significant impact of disability and chronic illness on sexual functioning has been identified, education in sexuality for nursing staff is difficult to find in the literature. Given that many nursing professionals may not have received sufficient education in sexuality from formal curricula, the need for continuing education formats in sexuality is especially salient. This paper discusses the rationale for such programs, and presents a general format that has been carried out as a one- to two-day continuing education workshop.

Notes: An equivalent circuit, which extends the Randles model to include coupled chemical steps, is considered for a finite diffusion layer, describing synthetic metals. Information was used, concerning the effect of interaction of solution species on the layer circuit, together with complimentary kinetic parameters from a nonlinear least squares fit to the dispersion data, of two-dimensional model functions, to study the glucose induced response of polyaniline and NMP.TCNQ in glucose oxidase loaded synthetic metals.

Notes: The enzyme-mediator-conducting polymer model provides a convenient charge transporting immobilization matrix for redox enzymes in potential biosensor constructions. This study considers the charge transport mechanism in the benzoquinone (Q)-polyaniline (Pani) system. An enhanced current can be obtained on Pani, compared with Pt, using Q as enzyme mediator. Two-electron redox pathways are available for the Q/H2Q (hydroquinone) system, but the kinetics limit this conversion. On Pt, one-electron equivalent is estimated. On Pani-modified electrodes, reduction of Q on Pani is a nearly reversible two-electron process at stationary electrodes at low pH. At rotating electrodes, the initial reaction occurs at the surface of the polymer at pH 1.1, but the second electron transfer is prevented by loss of the intermediate from the surface before it can migrate into the film. At stationary electrodes, the H2Q product is stabilized, possibly by the formation of a charge-compensating complex between the H2Q anion/radical and the polymer. At higher pH, charge transfer through the polymer is slow and no reduction of Q occurs on the outside of the film, instead occurring in a layer at the electrode limited by the exchange kinetics there. Promotion of the two-electron pathways on Pani is proposed as the source of current enhancement when Q is employed as an enzyme mediator.

Notes: The response of an amperometric oxidase enzyme electrode, monitored by the consumption of oxygen, was numerically modeled using a two substrate model. The reduction current was found to be sensitive to the thiele modulus, Φ02, which is dependent on the square of the biorecognition matrix thickness and the concentration of active enzyme within this matrix. The detectable concentration range to which the sensor can be used can be extended by reducing the membrane thickness or the enzyme loading, both of which reduce the signal change with substrate additions. The dependence of Φ02 on the square of the membrane thickness makes the sensor design exceedingly sensitive to minor changes in thickness and hence manufacturing of reproducible sensors with common deposition methods exceedingly difficult.
