Notes: Abstract Human papilloma virus (HPV; 16 and 18) is known to play an important etiologic role in cervical dysplasia, but its relationship with anal carcinoma is still unclear. Surgical samples from 80 female patients treated for anal epidermoid carcinoma in the Policlinic of Surgery in Geneva between 1976 and 1989 were retrospectively studied. Of these, HPV detection was performed in 41 whose DNA was preserved well enough to allow such an analysis. Seventeen (42%) samples contained HPV, with a high percentage of high risk HPV (15/41, 36%). Thirty-eight of the 80 patients had a cervical smear, of which 18% revealed cervical carcinoma. When compared with epidemiological data, the results of this study suggest that genital HPV infection predisposes not only to cervical cancer, but also to anal carcinoma, possibly by means of contiguous contamination.

Notes: Abstract The Intersection Point Method (IPM) is a new method for the determination of an analyte in the presence of several unknown interferences. The method is based on the Apparent Content Curves (ACC) from derivative signals. To test the proposed procedure an analysis of mixtures of indicators with strong spectral overlapping was carried out. Results obtained agree with the theoretical values. Besides, the determination of caffeine in several pharmaceuticals by IPM provides good results.

Notes: Abstract Rubber band ligation is a well established treatment of internal second-degree hemorrhoids. Up to now, the long-term results (〉5 years) of this method have not been assessed. The aim of this study was to determine the long-term success rate of rubber band ligation in patients with a first episode of second-degree hemorrhoids not responding to medical treatment (local cream with laxative). A total of 92 patients who were treated between 1979 and 1997 for second-degree hemorrhoids responded to a questionnaire. The need for complementary conservative (sclerotherapy, cryotherapy or rubber band ligation) or surgical treatment was considered indicative of relapse. The collected data were analyzed according to the Kaplan-Meier method. The average follow-up time was 5.6 years. There were 21 patients who suffered a relapse. The probability of successful treatment was 0.77 (range: 0.67–0.88) after 5 years and 0.68 (range: 0.5–0.86) after 10.6 years. We conclude that rubber band ligation represent an efficient long-term treatment for second-degree hemorrhoids. Approximately two thirds of the patients are cured after 5 years and more than a half after 10 years.

Notes: Conclusion Our experience during a 10-year period has shown that outpatient proctological surgery is safe and has a low complication rate given careful case selection. Two-thirds of all proctological surgical procedures may be performed ambulatorily, using local anesthesia or posterior perineal block in almost 90% of cases, more extensive anesthesia being necessary in only 10% of cases. Careful patient selection, optimal postoperative wound care and adequate postoperative analgesia are mandatory to obtain the patient's acceptance. Anorectal operations performed in the outpatient department with recovery at home are welltolerated by the patient, even better, it seems, than the same operation performed involving an overnight hospital stay. Day surgery should relieve patients' anxiety and result in a short postoperative recovery time at home and a prompt return to work. Outpatient surgery frees inpatient beds and may reduce the need for hospital expansion. It has positive effects on planning of overall health care.

Notes: Summary The paper exposes the theoretical and experimental study performed with the purpose to extend the application of the Linear Absorbances Method to more complex systems, which present two spectral interferences. The curves of collinearity are developed and a theoretical study of them is carried out. The theoretical equations developed are experimentally tested and the influence of the variables involved in the Linear Absorbance Method is studied, too. It is concluded that the use of couples of collinear wavelengths of the interferents allows to obtain the concentration of a compound in the presence of two interfering substances.

Notes: Abstract ZrO2-transformation-toughened glass-ceramics have been prepared by the sol-gel process from either colloidal gels (CG) or polymeric gels from alkoxides (PG), using, in the latest method, a different catalyst (acid, basic and without catalyst), and different compositions in the ZrO2·SiO2 system (free ZrO2 included). The different methods of synthesis of tetragonal zirconia in SiO2 matrix were compared in order to obtain thermal stability, and a high amount of stabilized tetragonal zirconia. The effect of catalyst, hydrolysis time, chemical composition, critical particle size in ZrO2(t)→ZrO2(m) transformation, the doping with vanadium on the ZrO2(t) stability in SiO2 matrix and Vickers microhardness of samples have also been studied.

Notes: Summary The paper exposes the theoretical and experimental principles of an analytical procedure for the determination of one compound in the presence of another with an overlapping absorption spectrum, without the need to use any standard solutions of the latter. The proposed method was applied to the determination of binary mixtures of known composition in order to assess its accuracy and precision.

Notes: Abstracts The determination of trimethoprim in the presence of dyphylline, proxyphylline, theophylline and caffeine by the linear absorbances method is described. Collinear couples of wavelengths, for the interfering dyphylline-proxyphylline-theophylline-caffeine system (in H2SO4, 0.05 mol/L), are provided in order to allow the determination of the analyte in the presence of these interfering substances.
