Notes: Cultured cerebellar granule cells grown in medium containing 10 mm K+ undergo apoptosis after 4–5 days in vitro (DIV), and, at that time, the activity of metabotropic glutamate (mGlu) receptors coupled to polyphosphoinositide (PI) hydrolysis begins to decline. In granule cells at 4 DIV, the mGlu receptor subtype mGlu5 was expressed at high levels. The expression of another PI-coupled mGlu receptor, the mGlu1a, was low at 4 DIV but increased during the following days. In cultures at 4–5 DIV, the few cells that already showed an apoptotic phenotype were devoid of mGlu5 receptors, but they all expressed mGlu1a receptors. The development of apoptosis was accelerated after treating the cultures with: (i) mGlu5 antisense oligonucleotides; (ii) the mixed mGlu receptor antagonist, (+)-α-methyl-4-carboxyphenylglycine; or (iii) the glutamate depleting enzyme, alanine aminotransferase. In contrast, an induced overexpression of mGlu5 receptors protected cultured granule cells against apoptotic death. We suggest that the activity of mGlu5 receptors supports cell survival, and a decline in the expression of mGlu5 receptors gives access to programmed cell death in cerebellar granule cells developing in primary cultures.

Notes: Abstract We report new FIR laser lines from 13CH2F2 molecules optically pumped by a waveguide CO2 laser. The increased tunability (300 MHz) with respect to a conventional CO2 laser allows the pumping of 13CH2F2 vibrational transitions of large offset. 34 new laser lines have been discovered, ranging from 113.1 μm to 491.4 μm in wavelength, thus increasing the number of known FIR laser lines from this important molecule to 99. For all the new lines and many (36) of those known previously, precise offset measurements through the transferred Lamb-dip technique were performed. The frequency of six new laser lines was also directly measured by heterodyne detection with known laser lines.

Notes: Abstract Near-UV radiation is generated by doubling the frequency of a semiconductor laser in a nonlinear crystal. The crystal is contained in a resonant cavity in order to improve the conversion efficiency. The cavity increases the efficiency by about three orders of magnitude. This radiation has been used to perform spectroscopy of metastable magnesium in an atomic beam. We observed the (3s3p)3 P−(3s3d)3 D transition multiplet, which is of interest for metrological applications. The isotopic shift between24Mg and26Mg was measured and new information on the hyperfine structure of25Mg was obtained. This radiation source is promising also in order to improve the Mg frequency standard.

Notes: Abstract The effect of externally applied mechanical stress was investigated by thin section electron microscopy of the microvessels in the unaffected palmar fascia in the carpal tunnel syndrome and in patients with Dupuytren's contracture before and after application of a continuous elongation device. In the unaffected palmar fascia the microfilaments of the endothelial cells were connected to a few adherens junctions and focal contacts; stress fibres were absent. In the cord of Dupuytren's disease the microfilaments were increased in quantity. The length ratios of the connections with the lateral and basal cell membrane were significantly higher than in the control group and increased to an even greater extent in the continuously extended fascia. Stress fibres appeared in the endothelial cells of postcapillary venules in the nonextended cord and in the endothelium of both arterioles and venules after extension elongation. The numerous intermediate filaments and the rare microtubules remained unchanged in the endothelial cells of all palmar fasciae analysed. In the endothelial cells of the microvessels the mechanical stress applied from outside mainly affected the contractile component of the cytoskeleton.

Notes: Abstract. The aim of this work is to describe the computed tomographic (CT) anatomy in patients who underwent Nissen's fundoplication. Forty patients (mean age = 61 years) with peptic esophagitis (nine cases), refractory gastroesophageal reflux (11 cases), and hiatal hernia (20 cases) were studied. Examinations were performed by third-generation CT equipment, with patients in the prone position after the ingestion of gastrovison and barium paste. In 34 patients, the examination demonstrated anatomical variations related to surgery, that is, the presence of a soft tissue mass at the level of the distal third of the esophagus. In four patients, a functional incompetence of the fundoplication (three cases) and a recurrent hiatal hernia (one case) were demonstrated. Our results suggest a possible application for CT study in postoperative follow up of patients who undergo Nissen's fundoplication, complementary to endoscopy and functional exams.

Notes: Abstract The aim of our study was to evaluate the feasibility of MR cholangiopancreatography (MRCP) at 0.5 T. To our knowledge no previous studies of MRCP have been performed at mid-field strength. Thirty-one patients with dilated biliary systems were examined with three-dimensional MRCP. All patients were studied with a 0.5 T superconducting magnet. A three-dimensional turbo spin-echo (TSE) sequence was acquired (TR = 3000 ms, TE = 700 ms, echo train length = 45; acquisition time = 14 min 10 s). Coronal images were post-processed with the MIP algorithm. Recently, the parameters have been optimised (TR = 3000 ms, TE = 700 ms, echo train length =128), reducing the acquisition time to 3 min. Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) was performed in 26 cases; 5 patients underwent percutaneous transhepatic cholangiography PTC. MRCP and ERCP images were evaluated by an experienced radiologist and an endoscopist. MRCP of diagnostic quality was acquired in all patients. Choledocholithiasis was correctly evaluated by MRCP in 12 of 12 patients, compared with 11 correct diagnoses by ERCP. The presence and the level of the stricture were accurately shown in 16 of 16 patients with MRCP and in 13 of 16 patients with ERCP. The peripheral biliary tree above the obstruction and pancreatic duct were better evaluated by MRCP in all cases. In 3 of 3 patients who had undergone bilio-enteric surgery, a correct evaluation of the site of the anastomosis was possible with MRCP. It is concluded that MRCP performed at mid-field strength allows good visualisation of the dilated biliary system. Excellent results have been obtained on comparison with ERCP. MRCP performed at mid-field strength could have the same clinical value as high field strength MRCP.

Notes: Abstract Radio and optical images of early-type galaxies with dust lanes have been analyzed in order to investigate the characteristics of the radio emission and to compare it with their properties at other frequencies. Except three galaxies, the remaining sources of our sample have diffuse radio emission, which does not extend beyond the stellar disk. The radio structures are small and weak (linear sizes in the range 2–10 kpc and radio powers in the range 5×1020–5×1021W Hz−1). Our preliminary results show that in a minority of cases (the most powerful radio sources) radio emission originates in the associated galactic nuclei, where a massive black hole is harboured. On the contrary, in the less powerful among our radio galaxies, sources originating from stellar phenomena may play and important role. We have classified the galaxies with respect to the dust lane morphology, comparing it with the radio emission. The sample is too small in order to reach firm conclusions, but the lack of radio sources in early-type galaxies with dust lanes along the galaxy minor axis seems to suggest that the accretion of material does not reach the conditions necessary to trigger nuclear activity.
