Notes: Abstract  A post-buckling analysis of composite laminated plates subjected to combined axial compression and uniform temperature loading is presented. The two cases of thermal post-buckling of initially compressed plates and of compression post-buckling of initially heated plates are considered. The initial geometrical imperfection of the plates is taken into account. The analysis uses a perturbation technique to determine buckling loads and post-buckling equilibrium paths. Numerical examples are presented that relate to the performances of perfect and imperfect, antisymmetrically angle-ply and symmetrically cross-ply laminated plates. Typical results are presented in dimensionless graphical form.

Notes: Abstract The structural efficiency of a range of panels under uniaxial compression is investigated using the optimum buckling design program VICONOPT. The design uses very efficient VIPASA analysis to guard against all possible modes of failure, together with a tailored sizing strategy. The panels all have nine blades, zed or hat stiffeners and between three and fifteen design variables, covering traditional design using one size of stiffener and more sophisticated design with five sizes of stiffener. Results show that using two stiffener sizes or two stiffener types in alternate positions across the panel width can produce mass savings of up to 30% compared with traditional design. Convergence on an optimum normally occurs within six sizing cycles, but up to twelve sizing cycles are required for sophisticated designs when the initial configuration is poorly chosen. Computational efficiency and material strength constraints are also considered.

Notes: This paper presents an accurate algorithm for structural non-stationary random seismic responses. The ground acceleration is assumed to be an evolutionary random process, of which the modulation function is non-uniformly modulated, i.e. it depends on both time and frequency. The method is used to compute the non-stationary seismic responses of a non-uniform shear beam. The dependency of the power spectral densities of the excitations and of the responses on time and frequency is discussed, based on numerical results. ©1997 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Notes: The paper proposes a two-level decomposition method for shape optimization of structures. The optimization problem is divided into two subproblems on the basis of the different effects on structural behaviour of different kinds of design variables. A minimum mass subproblem is solved to determine the sizing variables and a constraint evaluation function based on norm optimization is minimized to determine the shape variables. An efficient coupling technique is used between the subproblems to ensure very rapid and steady convergence. Numerical results are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the method. © 1997 by John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Notes: An alternative algorithm for finding exact natural frequencies or buckling loads from the transcendental, e.g. dynamic, stiffness matrix method is presented in this paper and evaluated by using the plate assembly testbed program VICONOPT. The method is based on the bounding properties of the eigenvalues provided by either linear or quadratic matrix pencils on the exact solutions of the transcendental eigenvalue problem. The procedure presented has five stages, including two accuracy checking stages which prevent unnecessary calculations. Numerical tests on buckling of general anisotropic plate assemblies show that significant time savings can be achieved compared with an earlier multiple determinant parabolic interpolation method.

Notes: An asynchronous parallel algorithm is developed in this paper. It is based on the newly developed sequential pseudo-excitation method for structural non-stationary random responses, used with the high precision direct (HPD-S) integration method. Examples run on a Transtech Paramid MIMD parallel computer show that it has good accuracy and gives very high speed-up and efficiency. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Notes: A new exact modal synthesis method for finding natural frequencies and modes of structures is proposed, in which the exact residual constraint modes based upon an incomplete set of normal modes of substructures with fixed interfaces are expressed in two parts. These are the static constraint modes and a residual term with which it represents exactly the effect of normal modes not retained. The modal synthesis uses a Ritz procedure and an iterative technique is presented for solving the non-linear equations of modal synthesis. This has the advantage that the results given by its first iteration are exactly those given by the Craig-Bampton-Hurty modal synthesis method, which leads to rapid convergence of subsequent iterations. The proposed method is an improvement of Hu's exact modal synthesis method and is also shown to have as its limit the method of exact dynamic condensation. Numerical examples show that using the proposed method yields superior accuracy when only a few lower modes are used. © 1997 by John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
