Notes: Fe100−xPtx alloy thin films with x=25–67 at. % were prepared by dc magnetron sputtering on naturally oxidized Si substrates. Effects of film composition, annealing temperature (300–650 °C), annealing time (5–120 min), and cooling rate (furnace cooling or ice water quench cooling) on the magnetic properties were investigated. Optimum conditions for saturation magnetization and coercivity of the Fe100−xPtx alloy films were found with x=50 at.%, annealed at 600 °C for 30 min and cooled by ice water quenching. Our experimental data suggests that the magnetic hardening in Fe100−xPtx alloy thin films is mainly due to the fct γ1-FePt phase and the domain wall pinning effect. The domain nucleation mechanism is dominated in samples with furnace cooling; the domain wall pinning mechanism dominates in samples cooled with ice water quenching. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract  Primary adrenal lymphoma is extremely rare. We describe a 64-year-old female patient who presented with fever of unknown origin. Imaging studies demonstrated bilateral bulky adrenal masses. She underwent bilateral adrenalectomy and the pathological diagnosis was large cell immunoblastic (B-cell) lymphoma. She received adjuvant combination chemotherapy with cyclophosphamide, doxorubicin, vincristine, and prednisolone in the following 6 months. She has been relapse free for 52 months. To the best of our knowledge, this case has the longest disease-free survival among those reported. The present case indicated that primary adrenal lymphoma should be included in the differential diagnosis of fever of unknown origin and/or suprarenal mass. Chemotherapy following surgical resection may be considered the treatment of choice.

Notes: Abstract An optimization approach for material-constant determination is developed and demonstrated for the endochronic constitutive model in this study. This model is rearranged so that it describes the plastic, viscoplastic and viscoelastic behavior in one simple form. Material constants for 304 stainless steel, alpha-titanium and viscoelastic elastomer Wingfoot@ are determined using this approach. Reduction of the general constitutive model and detailed formulation of the optimization problem for each specific case are given. Accurate optimization results giving good description of the material behavior are obtained. Superiority of the optimization approach over the trial-and-error method is discussed.

Notes: Summary In a work by Wu et al. [11], an anisotropic quadratic form of plastic strain increment was used to define the intrinsic time in the endochronic theory of plasticity. Based on this new definition, an anisotropic yield function was derived. This new version of endochronic theory was shown to describe the expansion, translation, rotation, and distortion of the yield surface under loading conditions. In this paper, the previous theory has been extended to include unloading and reloading. A procedure has been established to determine the metric of the anisotropic intrinsic time using information related to the yield surface of a material. An agreement with experimental results has been demonstrated in terms of motion and distortion of yield surfaces and the stress-strain response of tubular specimens subjected to a proportional and a non-proportional path in the axial-torsional plastic strain space. The procedure of calculation is given in detail.
