Notes: Purposely introduced pinholes can be processed so as to produce nearly spherical or paraboloidal depressions in (100) silicon by a two-step chemical etching procedure in KOH:water solutions. Regular arrays of f/1–f/10 specularly reflecting micromirrors can be fabricated.

Notes: Abstract: A sensitive radioisotopic assay has been used to examine the kinetic properties and regulation of biosynthesis of glutamine synthetase in C-6 glioma cultures. The Km values for glutamate, MgATP, and ammonium ion were 5mM, 14 mM, and 0.042 mM, respectively, when measured at the pH optimum of 7.2. There was an absolute requirement for a divalent metal ion, with 15 mM- Mg2+ being the preferred ion at pH 7.2. Activity was completely inhibited after 30 min with 8 mM-L-methionhe sulfoximine. The addition of 1 μM-cortisol to C-6 cultures caused a two to threefold increase in glutamine synthetase specific activity over a 96-h period, while dexamethasone at the same concentration elevated the level some 7-10-fold. This was specific for glucocorticoids, as other steroid hormones or catecholamines did not significantly affect glutamine synthetase specific activity. Cycloheximide (30 μM) or actinomycin D (0.01 μg/ml) blocked the hormone response. The continued presence of hormone was required in order to maintain an elevated enzyme level. The results suggest that glucocorticoids act to induce glutamine synthetase by stimulating new enzyme synthesis.

Notes: Abstract— Mitochondrial and cytoplasmic forms of aspartate aminotransferase were purified from rat brain homogenates and tested for their ability to catalyze transamination of various aromatic amino acids. The mitochondrial enzyme exhibited activity toward tyrosine and phenylalanine with 2-oxoglutar-ate as acceptor, although the specific activities were less than 1% of the corresponding aspartate activity when all substrates were 10 mM. Even less activity was seen with DOPA, 5-hydroxytryptophan and tryptophan. The cytoplasmic aspartate aminotransferase was active toward tryptophan, 5-hydroxytryptophan and DOPA, but these transaminations were favored by pyruvate or oxaloacetate rather than 2-oxoglutarate as keto acid. Based on co-migration of aromatic activities with the respective aspartate aminotransferases during isoelectric focusing and based on equal sensitivities of aromatic transamination and aspartate transamination to inhibition by vinylglycine, it was concluded that all activities resided in the aspartate aminotransferase enzymes. Some doubt exists, however, as to the physiological significance of these alternate activities in view of the requirement that aromatic amino acids must compete with aspartate for transamination by these enzymes.

Notes: Quantum mechanical anharmonic oscillators and Hamiltonians for particles in external magnetic fields are related to representations of nilpotent groups. Using this connection the eigenfunctions of the quartic anharmonic oscillator with potential Vα(x)=(α+(x2/2))2 can be used to determine the eigenfunctions of a charged particle in a nonconstant magnetic field, of the form Bz=β2+β3x. The quartic anharmonic oscillator eigenvalues for low-lying states are obtained numerically and a function which interpolates between α(very-much-less-than)0 (a double harmonic oscillator) and α(very-much-greater-than)0 (a harmonic oscillator) is shown to give a good fit to the numerical data. Approximate expressions for the quartic anharmonic oscillator eigenfunctions are then used to get the eigenfunctions for the magnetic field Hamiltonian. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The findings of this survey indicate that in fostering international transfer of technology much can be done to influence the development of inter-personal and inter-organizational contacts. This is not in itself a complete answer to international technology transfer, but this study suggests that it is an important, though much neglected area, which should be a central concern in science policy.A survey was conducted in 1970 and 1971 of the communication patterns of more than 1,200 research and development scientists and engineers working in Ireland. Techniques previously used in studying individual firms were adapted to suit the conditions within the country.

Notes: : The fractal nature of stream-length and catchment-area measurement is investigated using eight rivers in Missouri. The fractal dimension for the length measurement was found to average 1.158 and for area to average 1.0105. These values are close to those hypothesized by Mandeibrot (1983).

Notes: In this paper we are concerned with the wave generation by a singular forcelet in a viscous fluid of finite depth, where the singularity is located far from the bottom and not very near the free surface. In the first part of this work, the image system of an Oseenlet bounded by a no-slip wall, is considered. It is found that the resultant velocity field can be described by a planar distribution of vertical Oseen doublets and a negative Oseenlet located at the mirror point of the singularity with respect to the plane wall. In the second part of the work we deal with the generation of waves by these solutions. By imposing the linearized free-surface conditions on the solutions obtained from the first part, the wave generated is shown to exhibit the Kelvin ship wave pattern that agrees with observation. The effects of water depth and of submergence on the wave amplitude are also investigated. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.
