Notes: Interpenetrating polymer networks (IPNs) composed of polyurethanes and epoxies were prepared by the simultaneous technique. Modifications of the polymer structures resulted in a series of IPNs exhibiting semimiscible behavior, as evidenced by broad glass transitions in the dynamic mechanical spectra. Since this indicates materials with potentially good sound attenuation properties as a function of temperature and frequency, foams were prepared from these IPN systems. Enhanced sound absorption occurred in these foams when measured using the impedance tube method.

Notes: A high-torque rheometer was used to facilitate the polycondensation of 4-[5-amino-6-hydroxybenzoxazol-2-yl]benzoic acid (ABA) with trimesic acid and 1,3,5,7-tetrakis(4-carboxylatophenyl)adamantane to yield two- and three-dimensional benzobisoxazole polymers, respectively. Although the resultant polymer dopes exhibited improved homogeneity compared to polymer dopes previously prepared in glassware, improved polymer solution viscosities were not achieved. Fibers spun from the two- and three-dimensional polymers did not show a significant increase in compressive strength compared to fibers of the linear or one-dimensional benzobisoxazole polymer derived from the homopolymerization of ABA. Morphological studies of the polymer fibers and films by wide-angle X-ray scattering and scanning electron microscopy strongly indicated more lateral disorder and a more isotropic character for the three-dimensional structures compared to the one-dimensional structures. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Notes: Inosine-5′-monophosphate dehydrogenase (IMPDH) from the protozoan parasite Tritrichomonas foetus has been expressed in E. coli and crystallized. Crystals were grown to 0.1 mm in each dimension in 18 to 72 h using ammonium sulfate and low-molecular-weight polyethylene glycols. The crystals belong to the cubic space group P432 with unit cell edge = 157.25 Å. The enzyme is a homotetramer with each monomer having a molecular weight of 55,534 Da. There is one monomer per asymmetric unit, based on a volume/mass ratio of 2.7 Å3/Da and self-rotation analysis. The crystals are adequately stable to allow a complete data set to be collected from a single crystal. Complete native data sets have been collected to 2.3 Å resolution at 4°C using synchrotron radiation. High-quality complete data extending to 3.0 Å resolution have been collected from crystals of four putative derivatives, and the data appear to be isomorphous with that of the native crystals in each case. Efforts to solve the derivatives for use in MIR phasing are underway. © 1995 Wiley-Liss, Inc.

Notes: The relative influence of dispersed-phase viscosity and interfacial tension on equilibrium drop size and drop size distribution is studied for dilute suspensions by dispersing various silicone oils in water, methanol, and their solutions. Correlations for Sauter mean diameter, D32, are developed in terms of system variables using the mechanistic models of Part I. Drop sizes for low to moderate viscosity dispersed phases are normally distributed in volume and can be correlated by normalization with D32. Trends in the distributions are explained in terms of a parameter representing the relative resistance to breakage.

Notes: Photon correlation functions of a high-molecular-weight PMMA (Mw = 1.06 × 107, Mn = 2.2 × 106, Tg = 103°C) have been studied in the temperature range 98 - 149°C. In contrast to previous results, two relaxation modes are observed in relaxation functions. The observed relaxation functions of PMMA are analyzed for the first time in terms of a continuous spectrum representing the distribution of retardation times. Using a modified computer program originally developed by Provencher, we have computed the spectrum of retardation times at various temperatures. The appearance of two distinct relaxation modes is clearly evident in the distribution of the retardation times and in the time correlation functions below 123°C.

Notes: Probe diffusion of camphorquinone, thymoquinone, and diacetyl in polymers was studied by the laser-induced holographic grating relaxation (HGR) technique in polymers. The effects of changing the probe size and various parameters of the polymer, such as the molecular weight, chain conformation, and the glass transition temperature, on the probe diffusion coefficient have been investigated. Furthermore, effects of cross-linking and plasticizing the chains of the polymer host on the probe diffusion coefficient were also studied. Temperature-dependent studies show that except for the very low molecular weight poly(methyl methacrylate), all probe diffusion coefficient data above the glass transition temperature fit well to the WLF equation. ©1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: Flow-induced changes in the conformation of polymer molecules in dilute polyelectrolyte solutions were studied, using birefringence techniques, as a function of molecular weight and added salt concentration in laminar, two-dimensional extensional flows produced in four- and two-roll mills. Overshoots in the flow birefringence during startup of simple-shear flow are presented. Of particular interest is the so-called coil-stretch transition. It is shown that the electrostatic expansion of the polyelectrolyte has a dramatic effect on the onset shear rate for the coil-stretch transition and also on the shape of the flow birefringence versus shear rate curves during the stretching process. A reasonable description of the coil-stretch transition and its dependence on equilibrium configuration is obtained theoretically using a charged dumbbell model with conformation-dependent bead friction. Being dependent on the longest relaxation time of the polymer, and therefore not too sensitive to intramolecular details, the dumbbell model can be applied in two ways: either using a charge force to expand its rest state or reducing N, the number of Kuhn segments, in proportion to the increase in relaxation time of the expanded polyelectrolyte.
