Notes: Corticotrophin-releasing hormone (CRH) is a 41 amino acid neuropeptide which plays a major role in regulating the endocrine response to stress. CRH acts by first binding to specific receptors on the plasma membrane of target cells. A CRH receptor from a human corticotroph adenoma and rat brain has recently been cloned (CRH-R1). In this paper, we have chosen three different peptide sequences within the CRH-R1 molecule which bear no similarity to other members of this receptor subfamily (or indeed any known protein) and which are likely to be exposed on the surface of the native protein, for antibody production. Some of these fragments produced anti-peptide antibodies of good titre which cross-reacted with the CRH-R1 receptor expressed in transiently transfected COS-7 cells and in tissue extracts from rat cerebellum, cortex, pituitary gland and human myometrium, both in Western blots and in liquid-phase radioimmunoassay. We used immunofluorescence techniques to localize the CRH receptor in transiently transfected COS-7 cells, primary cultures of rat anterior pituitary (AP) cells, the corticotroph-tumour cells AtT20 D16–16 and cortical neurons in primary culture. Our results indicate IR-CRH-R1 receptors have a punctate distribution on the plasma membrane of AP cells and AtT20 D16–16 cells. Whilst in AP cells their appearance is a fine punctate pattern, in AtT20 cells, they appear as large patches which could account for receptor clusters. Within primary cortical neurons, their distribution does not appear to be polarized. Our results suggest that distribution of CRH-R1 receptors within the different cell-types investigated depends not only on the amino acid sequence but also on cellular factors.

Notes: [Auszug] There was a highly significant difference in body temperature and respiration-rate on different days and throughout the day due to different weather conditions between and during days. From Table 1 it will be seen that the mean body temperature and respiration-rate of the buffaloes was lower than ...

Notes: Summary Acidogenesis and solventogenesis byClostridium beijerinckii NRRL B-593 has been studied in batch growth, and in sucrose-limited chemostat and recycling fermentor growth. Cells grown in batch culture without pH control primarily produced either butyric and acetic acids, or these acids plus butanol, ethanol and isopropanol in ratios depending on the medium's content of reducing agent, calcium and iron. Cells in chemostat-culture at a mass doubling time (td) of 5.8 h produced primarily butyric and acetic acids at pH 6.8 and these acids plus butanol, ethanol and isopropanol at pH 4.8. Cells grown in a recycling fermentor (in which the td continuously increases) at pH 6.8 entered solventogenesis at a td of 43 h, producing primarily propanol, ethanol and butanol, along with butyric acid, but with greatly decreased production of acetic acid. Although “clostridial form” morphology, succeeded by sporulation, usually accompanied solventogenesis, the association was not invariant so that solventogenesis and sporogenesis can occur separately in this species.

Notes: Abstract In this article a generalized sampling theorem using an arbitrary sequence of sampling points is derived. The sampling theorem is a Kramer-type sampling theorem, but unlike Kramer's theorem the sampling points are not necessarily eigenvalues of some boundary value problems. The theorem is then used to characterize a class of entire functions that can be reconstructed from their sample values at the points tn = an + b if n = 0, 1, 2, ... and tn = an + c if n = 0, -1, -2, ..., where a, b, c are arbitrary constants. The reconstruction formula is derived explicitly in the form of a sampling series expansion. When a = 1, b = 0 = c, the famous Whittaker-Shannon-Kotel'nikov sampling theorem is obtained as a special case.

Notes: Summary Pleuropneumonia of goats and sheep has been known to cause serious economic losses in many countries including Saudi Arabia. A preliminary investigation was carried out on 163 goats and 130 sheep which showed clinical symptoms or post-mortem lesions of pleuropneumonia. Pathological samples from the respiratory tract of live or slaughtered goats and sheep (183 and 160 samples respectively) were cultured for mycoplasmas. Of 343 mycoplasma cultures examined 211 (61·5%) isolates were characterised biochemically. A total of 116 isolates were serologically identified asM. mycoides subsp.mycoides, M. ovipneumonia, M. conjunctivae, M. agalactiae subsp.agalactiae, M. putrifaciens andM. arginini. The remaining mycoplasma isolates were not identified. The significance of the identified isolates and their probable pathogenic effect on the respiratory tract of goats and sheep are discussed. Their pathogenicity needs to be established experimentally before initiating a control programme in the Kingdom.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary A description and a review of the Hilbert transform procedures for detecting and quantifying structural non-linearity in frequency response functions obtained during modal testing is presented in this paper. A method of minimizing the effect of residual modes of vibration, previously a problem with the numerical Hilbert transform, is also described.
