Notes: Abstract The use of dental radiology in cases of mass disaster is an absolute necessity. Radiographs usually permit identification of dental fragments containing as little as one tooth if a restoration or unique anatomical characteristic is present. Unfortunately the conditions at the scene are usually not adequate to use standard x-ray equipment. The paper presented here gives an overview of different types of mobile x-ray machines and digital radiographic techniques which are useful in disaster victim identification.

Notes: Summary Skeletal muscles is an uncommon site for metastatic spreading of malignancies such as carcinoma of the lung. Thus, to date, there have been only a small number of reports of carcinoma of the lung spreading to the skeletal muscles. This case study reports the rare combination of a rotator cuff lesion of the shoulder with the late occurrence of the metastasis of a squamous cell carcinoma of the lung in the ipsilateral deltoid muscle. The problems that result from this combination concerning diagnosis and therapy are discussed.

Notes: Abstract. A Hurthle cell tumor (oncocytoma) of the thyroid presented as a hypermetabolic focus in a fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography (FDG PET) study which was performed as staging procedure in a patient with malignant melanoma. This finding led to the initial diagnosis of a metastasis. In contrast, multiple liver metastases, seen on MRI and sonography, did not show any increased FDG uptake. Cytology results of one liver mass confirmed a melanoma metastasis, and of the neck mass, a Hurthle cell tumor. The Hurthle cell tumor was, based on clinical evidence, thought to be benign. This is the first description of a FDG PET-positive benign Hurthle cell tumor, with FDG PET-negative liver metastases of a malignant melanoma, in the same patient.

Notes: Abstract During (January) 1986–(May) 1988, we examined 272 eyes in 136 rhesus monkeys in the closed Cayo Santiago colony of the Caribbean Primate Research Center of the University of Puerto Rico. Seventy-eight eyes were less than 10 years of age. One hundred and ninety-four were aged 10–28 years. The fundi were examined and photographed. Fluorescein angiography was performed in some eyes. Selected cases were evaluated for ‘acuity’ loss by recording of pattern-evoked retinal and cortical signals. Light and electron microscopy were used to evaluate the pigment epithelium of some animals. Thirty-eight percent of all eyes had posterior pole drusen. Incidence was highly age-related. When late-stage lesions were found, we did not see neovascularization, but late hyperfluorescence was consistent with degenerative scarring and atrophy. Electrophysiology demonstrated moderately reduced acuity in the presence of numerous macular drusen. Electrooculograms were low normal. Histopathology showed changes identical to those reported in human age-related macular degeneration. No eyes less than 10 years of age had confluent drusen or disciform-like lesions. The incidence of drusen in samples of some social groups was much higher than others.

Notes: Abstract By in situ chromosomal hybridization, and by somatic cell and radiation hybrid analysis, we have determined the genomic position of the human genes encoding four TAFII subunits of TFIID (TAFII150, TAFII105, TAFII68, TAFII18), the three subunits of TFIIA (TFIIA35 and TFIIA19, both encoded by the same gene, and TFIIA12), CDK8, and SURB7. All of these proteins are bona fide components of human class II holoenzymes as well as targets of signal transduction pathways that regulate genome expression. The genes encoding them are present in the human genome in a single copy and are localized at 8q23, 18q11.2, 17q11.1–11.2, 1p21, 14q31, 15q21–23, 13q12, and 12p12, respectively. We have mapped all of them to chromosomal regions where hereditary genetic diseases have been localized or which are involved in malignancies, which makes them potential candidates for a causal involvement in these phenotypes.
