    Notes: This paper reports the present stage of commissioning of the gas-phase photoemission beamline at Elettra, Trieste. The beamline is designed for atomic and molecular science experiments with high-resolution and high-flux synchrotron radiation. It consists of an undulator source, variable-angle spherical-grating monochromator and two experimental stations. The design value of the energy range is 20 to 800 eV with a specified resolving power of over 10000. The procedure adopted for calibration of this type of monochromator is discussed. At present a resolving power up to 20000 and a range up to 900 eV have been measured. Absorption spectra taken at the argon LII,III-edge and at the nitrogen, oxygen and neon K-edges are as sharp as, or sharper than, any reported in the literature. The instrumental broadening is well below the natural line-width making it difficult to quantify the resolution; this problem is discussed.

    Description / Table of Contents: Riassunto La forza dell’oscillatore generalizzato per la transizioneX 1Σ g + →a 1∏ g nella molecola di azoto, che è una transizione proibita in approssimazione di dipolo e permessa come transizione di quadrupolo, è stata determinata a partire dalla sezione d’urto differenziale anelastica degli elettroni. La transizione è stata eccitata con elettroni di 1 keV di energia ed è stata osservata fino ad angoli di diffusione di 50°. I valori rrelativi di sezione d’urto sono stati messi su scala assoluta normalizzandoli al picco elastico e sono stati quindi utilizzati per derivare la sezione d’urto d’eccitazione totale, nonché la probabilità di eccitazione di quadrupolo. Si descrive l’apparato sperimentale che è uno spettrometro per elettroni a fasci incrociati, operante ad energie intermedie ((50⋎4000) eV).
    Notes: Summary The generalized oscillator strength for the dipole-forbidden quadrupole-allowed transitionX 1Σ g + →a 1∏ g in molecular nitrogen has been determined from the electron inelastic differential cross-section measured at 1000 eV incident energy and scattering angles as large as 50°. The relative cross-section has been brought to the absolute scale through normalization to the elastic cross-section. The total excitation cross-section and the electric-quadrupole excitation probability are also derived. A description of the apparatus, which is a crossed-beam, intermediate-energy (50⋎4000) eV, coincidence electron spectrometer, is presented.

    Description / Table of Contents: Riassunto In questo lavoro si presenta un set completo di misure assolute della sezione d’urto doppiamente differenziale di ionizzazione dell’atomo di elio per impatto di elettroni di 500 eV. Sono state misurate le distribuzioni angolari tra 10° e 145° sia degli elettroni emessi che di quelli diffusi con energie comprese tra 40 e 435.5 eV. Il lavoro si propone di contribuire alla definizione della sezione d’urto doppiamente differenziale dell’elio per energie dell’elettrone emesso prossime a (E 0−IP)/2, oveE 0 è l’energia incidente eIP l’energia di ionizzazione dello stato 1s. Infatti i dati sperimentali esistenti in questa regione energetica sono scarsi. Si studia la possibilità di rappresentare tutta la superficie di Bethe con una forma funzionale semplice.
    Notes: Summary A complete set of absolute double differential cross-section (DDCS) for electron impact ionization of helium has been measured at an incident energyE 0=500 eV. The angular distributions of the ejected and scattered electrons between 40 and 435.5 eV have been measured over the angular range of (10÷145)o. This work supplements the mapping of DDCS for ejected electron energies close to (E 0−IP)/2 (IP is the He 1s ionization energy), a region where the experimental data are fragmentary. The possibility of representing the full Bethe surface with a simple functional form is investigated.
