Notes: We report that the ion implantation of a small dose of Mo into a silicon substrate before the deposition of a thin film of Ti lowers the temperature required to form the commercially important low resistivity C54–TiSi2 phase by 100–150 °C. A lesser improvement is obtained with W implantation. In addition, a sharp reduction in the dependence of C54 formation on the geometrical size of the silicided structure is observed. The enhancement in C54 formation observed with the ion implantation of Mo is not explained by ion mixing of the Ti/Si interface or implant-induced damage. Rather, it is attributed to an enhanced nucleation of C54–TiSi2 out of the precursor high resistance C49–TiSi2 phase. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Objective To determine the proportion and nature of congenital anomalies in babies born to women exposed to newly marketed drugs during the first trimester.Design Non-interventional observational cohort studies. Methods The women were identified in confidence by the Prescription Pricing Authority. The doctor was sent a questionnaire to determine clinical events, including pregnancy, occurring after the drug was dispensed. A supplementary questionnaire determined the outcome of each reported pregnancy.Setting General medical practice in England.Population Women exposed to newly marketed drugs in whom pregnancy was recorded.Main outcome measures Outcomes of pregnancies, the proportion and nature of congenital anomalies in the babies born. Results 2511 pregnancies were reported. In 831 of these pregnancies a newly marketed drug had been taken during the first trimester and in 74 during the secondkhird trimester. The outcome was ascertained for 780 (94%) of these 831 pregnancies: 547 (66%) births; 10 (1%) ectopic pregnancies; 94 (11%) spontaneous miscarriages; 5 (〈 1%) missed abortions; 120 (14%0) legal abortions; and 4 (C 1%) intrauterine deaths. 557 infants were born, of whom 14 (2.5%) had congenital anomalies. Conclusions The proportion of live infants with a congenital abnormality born to mothers exposed to newly marketed drugs in the first trimester was similar to the percentage of congenital anomalies estimated by the Ofice for National Statistics. These data add valuable information to the safety database of these drugs.

Notes: The post-marketing surveillance (PMS) of drugs is necessary because of the limited size of the clinical safety database at the time of marketing. The principal hypothesis-generating methods of PMS are spontaneous reporting (e.g. the yellow card) and Prescription Event Monitoring. These methods are discussed in this chapter and certain basic pharmacoepidemiological issues that are relevant are briefly reviewed.

Notes: Abstract Objective: The results of Prescription-Event Monitoring (PEM) from over 13 000 patients receiving cisapride are compared with safety data from a large-scale clinical study involving nearly 10 000 patients. Results: The clinical study population showed a significantly younger age profile than the PEM population and excluded patients with serious disease; however, both studies showed similar patterns of adverse events. The most common adverse events reported in association with cisapride in both studies were diarrhoea, headache, abdominal pain, constipation and nausea. Some of these may be attributed to the underlying condition rather than the action of the drug. Prompting patients about adverse events during a clinical trial assessment appeared to increase the reporting of some conditions: for example, diarrhoea was reported more frequently in the clinical trial than in the PEM study. Conclusion: Both studies showed cisapride to be generally safe and well tolerated.

Notes: Abstract. The acute toxicity of technical-grade glyphosate acid, glyphosate isopropylamine, and three glyphosate formulations was determined for adults of one species and tadpoles of four species of southwestern Australian frogs in 48-h static/renewal tests. The 48-h LC50 values for Roundup® Herbicide (MON 2139) tested against tadpoles of Crinia insignifera, Heleioporus eyrei, Limnodynastes dorsalis, and Litoria moorei ranged between 8.1 and 32.2 mg/L (2.9 and 11.6 mg/L glyphosate acid equivalent [AE]), while the 48-h LC50 values for Roundup® Herbicide tested against adult and newly metamorphosed C. insignifera ranged from 137–144 mg/L (49.4–51.8 mg/L AE). Touchdown® Herbicide (4 LC-E) tested against tadpoles of C. insignifera, H. eyrei, L. dorsalis, and L. moorei was slightly less toxic than Roundup® with 48-h LC50 values ranging between 27.3 and 48.7 mg/L (9.0 and 16.1 mg/L AE). Roundup® Biactive (MON 77920) was practically nontoxic to tadpoles of the same four species producing 48-h LC50 values of 911 mg/L (328 mg/L AE) for L. moorei and 〉1,000 mg/L (〉360mg/L AE) for C. insignifera, H. eyrei, and L. dorsalis. Glyphosate isopropylamine was practically nontoxic, producing no mortality among tadpoles of any of the four species over 48 h, at concentrations between 503 and 684 mg/L (343 and 466 mg/L AE). The toxicity of technical-grade glyphosate acid (48-h LC50, 81.2–121 mg/L) is likely to be due to acid intolerance. Slight differences in species sensitivity were evident, with L. moorei tadpoles showing greater sensitivity than tadpoles of the other four species. Adult and newly emergent metamorphs were less sensitive than tadpoles.

Notes: Abstract Water vapor adsorption equilibria on activated carbons typically exhibit hysteresis. The size and shape of the hysteresis loop which separates the adsorption and desorption branches is a strong function of the pore size and interconnectivity of the pores. Neither conventional pore filling models nor statistical thermodynamics approaches provide a means for predicting the extent of hysteresis from only adsorption measurements. This work uses the Kelvin Equation in conjunction with the structural concept of a stochastic pore network to describe measured water isotherms on BPL carbon. Using a pore segment distribution function determined from the adsorption branch, it is shown that totally random assemblies underestimate the extent of hysteresis. It is possible, however, to closely fit the measured BPL-water hysteresis loop using a patchy heterogeneity in which a proportion of the larger pores are preferentially located on the exterior, mid-range pores are concentrated in a sub-surface layer and some large pores form shielded voids behind much smaller pores.
