    Notes: Abstract In order to elucidate the nature of the LiCl/1,3‐dimethy‐2‐imidazolidinone (DMI) solvent system as one of the homogeneous reaction media of cellulose, cellulose acetate (CA) and O‐methylcellulose (MC) were prepared using this solvent system, and the distribution of substituents within anhydroglucose units was examined by 13C‐NMR. It was found that (i) homogeneous cellulose solutions can be easily prepared by heating 2, 5–12 and 100 parts of weight of cellulose, LiCl, and DMI, respectively, and (ii) the relative reactivity of hydroxyl groups is in the order C‐6 〉 C‐2 〉 C‐3 for both CA and MC. A remarkable feature of this solvent system is that the reaction efficiency in etherification is very high compared with other homogeneous solvent systems.

    Notes: Abstract This work reports the results obtained with the application of High Order Boltzmann Machines without hidden units to construct classifiers for some problems that represent different learning paradigms. The Boltzmann Machine weight updating algorithm remains the same even when some of the units can take values in a discrete set or in a continuous interval. The absence of hidden units and the restriction to classification problems allows for the estimation of the connection statistics, without the computational cost involved in the application of simulated annealing. In this setting, the learning process can be sped up several orders of magnitude with no appreciable loss of quality of the results obtained.

    Notes: Sum-over-states perturbation and finite perturbation calculations, within the ‘Solvaton’ model, are presented for the variation of some 17O and 19F chemical shifts as a function of the dielectric constant of the medium. In general, the nuclear screening and charge are predicted to increase as the dielectric constant increases. The effects of hydrogen bonding are included by means of minimum energy dimer models in some of the sum-over-states calculations.

    Notes: High precision 14N screening measurements are presented for some nitroalkanes. The screening increases as the dielectric constant of the solvent decreases in all cases considered. The β effect on the nitrogen screening is found to be largely independent of solvent, and is thus an intrinsic property of the nitroalkanes. Good agreement is obtained between the observed solvent effects on nitrogen screening and those calculated by the SOS procedure using INDO/S parameters. It is concluded that the measured nitrogen screening changes monitor the electronic changes which occur in the nitroalkanes as the medium is changed.

Hydrogen bonding with H2O and CF3CH2OH is incorporated in a supermolecule approach.
