    Notes: Abstract In cats and monkeys, extrastriate visual areas that have been reported to be involved in the near triad of pupilloconstriction, convergence, and accommodation have well-defined projections to the pretectal olivary nucleus (PON), the retinorecipient pretectal nucleus mediating the pupillary light reflex in mammals. We have therefore used alert, behaving primates to investigate the possibility that PON neurons are involved in the pupillary near response in addition to the pupillary light reflex. Single-unit recording revealed that PON luminance neurons significantly increased their firing rate with increases in retinal illumination and the resultant pupilloconstriction. In contrast, their activity did not significantly increase during pupilloconstriction elicited by near viewing. Thus the behavior of PON luminance neurons is appropriate for their participation in the pupillary light reflex, but is inappropriate for any proposed role in the pupillary near response. This result strongly suggests that neurons in the primate PON are solely related to the pupillary light reflex and that the cortical projections to this pretectal nucleus are related to this reflex and do not play a role in the pupillary near response.

    Notes: Abstract In humans and other primates, an increase in luminance in either eye elicits bilateral pupilloconstriction that is essentially equal in both eyes. Current models of the neural substrate for this clinically important light reflex propose that a retinorecipient pretectal nucleus projects bilaterally to the Edinger-Westphal nucleus (EW), which contains the parasympathetic, preganglionic neurons controlling pupilloconstriction. Based on single-unit recording studies in anesthetized cats and rats, it has been further suggested that luminance neurons in only one pretectal nucleus, the pretectal olivary nucleus, mediate this reflex. However, to our knowledge, there have been no comparable electrophysiological studies in primates of the pupillary light reflex or the pretectal luminance neurons that mediate this reflex. To address this issue, single-unit recording and electrical microstimulation studies were carried out in the pretectum of alert, trained, rhesus monkeys. These studies demonstrated that the primate pretectum contains luminance neurons with the characteristics appropriate for mediating the pupillary light reflex and that these neurons are located in one retinorecipient pretectal nucleus, the pretectal olivary nucleus. Electrical microstimulation at the site of these neurons often elicited pupilloconstriction. Our results provide clear evidence for the involvement of the pretectum, and more specifically the pretectal olivary nucleus, in mediating the pupillary light reflex in primates.

    Notes: Miscible blends of the polyhydroxy ether of bisphenol-A, Phenoxy, with a series of aliphatic polyesters were studied using melting point depression analysis and sorption to obtain the Flory-Huggins polymer-polymer interaction parameter, B. The B values obtained from these measurements were found to agree well in sign, magnitude, and variation with ester repeat structure and to also agree well with B values measured calorimetrically for mixtures of low molecular weight compounds with structures which are analogous to those of the polymers. These comparisons suggest that the same mechanisms are responsible for the exothermic heats of mixing measured directly for the analog compounds and indirectly for the miscible polymer blends. For this general system, evidence is provided which suggests that hydrogen bond formation between the hydroxyl group on Phenoxy and the ester moiety is probably responsible for the exothermic interactions and polymer blend miscibility observed.

    Notes: The mechanical properties of a variety of immiscible binary blends, with and without third component polymeric compatibilizers, are reviewed and qualitatively related to the degree of adhesion between blend components as determined by lap shear testing. Generally, blends comprised of components which adhere well, one to the other, show improved ductility relative to blends of components which do not adhere, Similarly, polymeric compatibilizers are found to be more effective for improving the properties of a binary blend system if they adhere well to both primary components of the immiscible mixture. These results suggest that adhesion between phases in the mixture strongly influences the ultimate properties of the blend. Some evidence is presented which suggests that components which adhere well are partially miscible.

    Notes: The effect of polyamide end-group configuration on morphology generation and toughness of blends with maleated elastomers was investigated. Two difunctional polyamides, a copolymer containing 15% nylon 6,6 and an amine enriched nylon 6, were compared to monofunctional nylon 6 materials of equivalent molecular weight and melt viscosity. Difunctional polyamides have some chains with amine groups on both ends capable of reacting with the maleated rubber phase resulting in crosslinking-type effects. The elastomers used included styrene-butadiene-styrene block copolymers with a hydrogenated midblock, SEBS, and versions with X% grafted maleic anhydride, SEBS-g-MA-X%, and a maleated ethylene/propylene random copolymer, EPR-g-MA. Blends based on difunctional polyamides form large, complex rubber particles when compounded in a single-screw extruder; however, by compounding with an appropriate twin-screw extruder, the size and complexity of the particles can be reduced to levels similar to blends with the monofunctional nylon 6 controls. Measurement of the extent of reaction between the amine end groups and the grafted maleic anhydride revealed that a larger number of amine groups are consumed for the difunctional polyamides than for their monofunctional controls. The room-temperature Izod impact strength of blends with the difunctional polyamides is greater than are the corresponding blends with the controls; however, subambient toughness depends mainly on the inherent ductility of the polyamide matrix. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
