Notes: Abstract Complete rupture of the pectoralis major muscle, first described by Patissier in 1822, is a rare sports injury. Less than 100 cases have been reported in the literature since 1822. In this study, we describe our surgical technique and summarize our results and experience of the surgical treatment of pectoralis major rupture. Seven athletes (4 wrestlers, 2 handball players, 1 body-builder) were surgically treated in our department from 1981 to 1996. During the follow-up examination, five patients had excellent and two had good results, and six athletes could return to sports activity at their preoperative level. Among our patients we emphasize that of a wrestler, who had suffered an acute rupture, and 3 months after the surgery he won an Olympic gold medal. According to the literature and our experience, we suggest that only surgical repair of the acute pectoralis major rupture will result in both complete recovery and restoration of the full strength of the muscle, essential for active athletes.

Description / Table of Contents: The purpose of this study was to compare the midterm results of the conservative treatment of anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) ruptures in athletes. During 1989 and 1990, 279 athletes with ACL ruptures were treated in our Sports Surgery Department, and 221 of them were suitable for inclusion in the study. The patients were divided into two groups based on management after the diagnosis of ACL rupture had been made. Group I (n = 129) underwent ACL reconstruction using free bone-patellar tendon-bone autografts, while group II (n = 92) received conservative treatment. We were able to evaluate 92 patients during follow-up (42 from group I and 50 from group II). The average follow-up period was 86 months. There were no significant differences between the two groups regarding the patients’ age, sex, or level of sports activity. Follow-up consisted of clinical and radiological examinations and recording of the subjective opinions of the patients. During follow-up, we used IKDC and OAK scores to evaluate the results. We found significantly better results in the group that was operated on if the patients took part in high-risk pivoting sports, but there was no difference if the patients were in the low-risk or no-risk pivoting group of athletes. Concerning reoperation and early arthrosis, the difference was significant between the two groups.

Notes: Abstract Radioactive191Pt(3/2−) alloyed to iron has been oriented at low temperature in a dilution refrigerator. The resonance absorption spectrum of the 82.4 keV transition of the polarized split source has been registered at high (≈ 1 K) and low (≤ 15 mK) temperatures. From the high temperature spectrum δ (E2/M1; 82.4) 〈 0 is established. From the positive-to-negative speed asymmetry of the low tempe rature spectrum we determined μ[191-Pt(g.s.)] 〉 0. This result is in agreement with deformed Hartree-Fock calculation predictions.

Notes: Abstract A dilute101mRhCr alloy has been investigated by means of low temperature nuclear orientation in the temperature range of 6–60 mK. The magnetic hyperfine field has been found proportional to the macroscopic chromium magnetization and follows even at these low temperatures an Overhauser distribution. The maximum hyperfine field value is Bo (T=6 mK)=7.0(5) T. A Knight shift of −16% affects the external magnetic field at the nuclear site.

Notes: Abstract 195,197mHg has been oriented at low temperature in a cadmium single crystal. From the orientation pattern of the 388 keV gamma ray VZZ (HgCd) =+1.82(25).1018 V/cm2 has been deduced. Using the dipole-relaxation mechanism on the gold isomeric state, the relaxation constant CK=0.044(5)Ks, the quadrupole interaction frequencies Ν Q (195m-AuCd)=+395(18) MHz, Ν Q (197m-AuCd)=+380(58) MHz and δ (E2/M1; 261 keV) 〈 0 are obtained from the orientation pattern of the 261 and 279 keV gamma rays. Using literature electric field gradient of gold in cadmium, Q(195m-Au,11/2)=(+) 1.41(1.0)b and Q(197m-Au,11/2)=(+)1.35(22)b can be deduced.

Notes: Abstract This paper deals with the perturbation of low temperature nuclear orientation in an intermediate state by an interaction not axially symmetric around the orientation axis. The directional distribution of the emitted radiation is factorized into initial orientation tensors and perturbation factors known from perturbed angular correlation theory. Low temperature nuclear orientation coefficients have been calculated numerically for111Cd in a polycrystalline sample with axially symmetric electric field gradient. Nuclear orientation experiment on111In in indium host confirms theoretical perturbation predictions and demonstrates the sensitivity of the method on different parameters. Moreover this orientation allows the determination, in magnitude and sign of111In (ground state) nuclear magnetic moment: μ = +5.48(10)μn.
