    Notes: Abstract Background. The intraarterial approach is one of the most important routes for the administration of anticancer drugs for head and neck cancer. A profound knowledge of the anatomical characteristics and variations of the carotid artery, such as its branching pattern, length, and inner diameter, is essential to avoid complications with catheter insertion. Methods. We conducted a morphometric investigation of head and neck arteries in 29 Japanese cadavers (58 sites). Results. The branching pattern of the external carotid artery showed variations. In 65.5% of the cadavers, the lingual, facial, and superior thyroid arteries arose separately. However, in 31.0% of the cadavers, the lingual artery formed a common trunk with the facial artery, and in 3.5%, the lingual artery formed a common trunk with the superior thyroid artery. The transverse facial artery arose from the superficial temporal artery in 53.4% of the specimens, from the maxillary artery in 27.6%, and from a site central to the maxillary artery in 19.0%. The posterior auricular artery arose from the external carotid artery at the same level as the maxillary artery in 37.9% of specimens, and from a site central to the maxillary artery in 62.1%. The occipital artery arose from the external carotid artery at the same level as the maxillary artery in 55.2% of specimens, and from a site peripheral to the facial artery in 44.8%. The lengths from the auricular point to the origins of the upper branches of the external carotid artery were: 2.8 mm to the transverse facial artery, 3.2 cm to the maxillary artery, 3.8 cm to the posterior auricular artery, 6.6 cm to the occipital artery, 7.4 cm to the facial artery, 8.8 cm to the lingual artery, and 10.4 cm to the superior thyroid artery. Conclusions. These results, have led to some clarification of the clinicoanatomical basis for intraarterial infusion. These data should be helpful for assessing the approximate level of the catheter tip and for evaluating whether the catheter is placed appropriately, by transient staining of the infused area.

    Notes: Abstract The levels of certain essential amino acids, in particular cysteine, lysine and methionine, in the seed storage protein of a commercial spring variety of rape, Brassica napus, have been increased by the introduction of an antisense gene for cruciferin, which is the most abundant storage protein in rapeseed. The antisense construct contained part of the cruA gene in an inverted orientation, and the gene was driven by the 5′ flanking region of the gene for napin such that antisense RNA was expressed in a seed-specific manner. The construct was introduced by Agrobacterium-mediated gene transfer. In self-pollinated seeds (T1 seeds) of transgenic plants there was a reduction in the levels of the α1β1 and α2/3β2/3 subunits of cruciferin, whereas the level of the α4β4 subunit was unchanged. The total protein and lipid contents of transgenic seeds did not differ significantly from that of normal seeds. Seeds with reduced amounts of cruciferin accumulated higher amounts of napin than non-transformed seeds, but the level of oleosin was unaffected. Amino-acid analysis of the seed storage protein revealed that T1 seeds with reduced amounts of cruciferin contained higher relative levels of three essential amino acids, namely, lysine, methionine and cysteine, with increases of 10%, 8% and 32% over the respective levels in non-transgenic seeds (B. napus cv Westar).

    Notes: Abstract Among Escherichia coli tolZ mutants tolerant to colicins E2, E3, and D, one, KHI10, had a high frequency of λ lysogenization, like the tolZ21 mutant, but unlike tolZ21 KHI10 grew on nonfermentable carbon sources. The tolZ10 gene of KHI10 was cloned and sequenced, and found to have a silent mutation in the ftsH gene, causing an alteration of a minor codon, CUA, for Leu-5 to a suboptimal codon, CUC. In spite of the change in a minor codon, the amount of the FtsH protein present in mutant cells was much less than that in the parental strain. In vivo transcription of the tolZ10 gene was not decreased relative to the wild-type ftsH gene. Analysis of other silent mutations altering the Leu-5 codon (CUA) to CUG or CUU (optimal and suboptimal codons, respectively) revealed that the decrease in concentration of FtsH was seen only with the CUC (tolZ10) codon. Prediction of the mRNA secondary structure suggested that the change from A to C extends the base pairing region longer by one base pair at the root of the stem structure, thus sequestering the Shine-Dalgarno sequence and decreasing the rate of the translational initiation of FtsH.

    Notes: Abstract The surface tension of aqueous solutions of tetradecyl-trimethylammonium chloride (TTAC) and decyltrimethylammonium chloride (DeTAC) were measured as a function of temperature at concentrations below and above the critical micelle concentration under atmospheric pressure. The entropy and energy of adsorption from the monomeric state and from the micellar state and also the entropy and energy of micelle formation for TTAC were evaluated and compared with those of dodecyltrimethyl-ammonium chloride (DTAC). The values of ΔM W s and ΔM W u for TTAC and DTAC systems show that the micelle formation is driven by the entropy at low temperatures and by the energy at high temperatures.

    Notes: A weighting function by which the mass matrix is made to be diagonal is deduced on the two-dimensional simplex element. Adopting the weighted residual method with the deduced weighting function for spatial domain and the two-step Lax-Wendroff method for time differentiation, the two-dimensinoal tidal flow in a model basin is calculated by means of the explicit finite element method. The water mass transport integrated over one tidal period at some cross-sections of the basin is also estimated, in order to verify the water mass conservation. It is found that the water mass is nearly conserved in the present method, although the usual lumped mass matrix technique fails to conserve.The present explicit finite element method with the conservative form of governing equations is also investigated and the water mass conservation is found to be a little more improved in this case than in the case of non-conservative forms. Application to a real bay indicates that the method with the conservative form of equations could be used for the estimation of tidal residual flow.

    Notes: The seeded emulsion copolymerizations of styrene and acrylamide were carried out at 50°C using polystyrene latex particles as the seed and potassium persulfate as the initiator, respectively. It was found that the change in the number of seed particles initially charged causes a drastic change in the kinetic behavior of this seeded emulsion copolymerization system: when the number of seed particles initially charged was less than a certain critical value, both styrene and acrylamide started polymerization from the beginning of the reaction. However, when the number of seed particles was higher than this critical value, an apparent induction period suddenly emerged only for acrylamide polymerization, that is, acrylamide did not start polymerization until the styrene conversion exceeded around 75%, while the styrene polymerization started and continued very smoothly from the beginning of the reaction. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.     Notes: Abstract  The number of goblet cells in the small intestines of C3H/HeN mice increased rapidly following their infection with about 500 third-stage larvae (L3) of the intestinal nematode Nippostrongylus brasiliensis. The number of goblet cells reached its peak on day 9 postinfection (p.i.). Worm burdens in the hosts’ small intestines were determined following a challenge infection with encysted metacercariae of the intestinal trematodes Echinostoma trivolvis or E. caproni on days 8 and 16 after primary infections with N. brasiliensis. All metacercariae of E. trivolvis or E. caproni used to challenge the hosts on day 8 p.i. were expelled. Considerable numbers of E. trivolvis (48.6%) and E. caproni (67.1%) remained in the intestines of hosts challenged with these echinostomes on day 16 p.i. All the controls used for E. trivolvis and E. caproni infections without primary infections with N. brasiliensis showed recovery rates greater than 70%. An enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) showed that the IgM titer rose remarkably and plateaued on day 11 p.i. No marked rise in the IgG or IgA titer occurred during the experiment. These results indicate that mucins increased by hyperplastic goblet cells associated with primary infections with N. brasiliensis are responsible for a rapid expulsion of the worms of the challenge infection with E. trivolvis or E. caproni from the mouse host.

    Notes: Abstract C3H/HeN mice were infected with Echinostoma trivolvis metacercariae on day 0, given intramuscular injections of the immunosuppressive agent FK506 daily for 5 or 7 days, and necropsied on days 5, 8, 12, 15, 20, and 30 postinfection (p.i.). Control mice were infected with the echinostomes but were not treated with FK506. A significant reduction in mastocytosis was seen from day 12 to day 15 p.i. in the treated group. No reduction was observed in numbers of goblet cells and eosinophils in the treated group. The number of white blood cells was lower in the treated mice than in the controls. No significant difference in the optical density values of immunoglobulins appeared in control versus treated mice. Treatment with FK506 did not delay worm expulsion markedly, probably because the drug did not suppress goblet-cell hyperplasia. Increased mucus production associated with goblet-cell hyperplasia is primarily involved in the expulsion of E. trivolvis in murine hosts.
