Notes: Summary From a total of 22 broiler flocks 347 serum samples were screened by the haemagglutination inhibition (HI) test and 114 (32·9%) were positive for antibodies to egg drop syndrome 1976 (EDS'76). The HI titres of the serum samples ranged from 2 to 9 log2 and the overall geometric mean titre was 3·9 log2. Of the serum samples 82·5% showed HI titres between 22 to 25 and the most frequent titre was 23. All the flocks were positive and the flock prevalence of HI antibodies ranged from 13·3 to 46·6 per cent. The age distribution of HI antibodies and their titres have also been recorded. The widespread prevalence of EDS'76 virus infection in broilers and its likely significance are discussed.

Notes: We report the first gas phase spectroscopic study of iron monocarbide. FeC molecules were generated in a laser vaporization molecular beam source and detected by laser induced fluorescence. Twenty-six vibronic bands have been recorded in the 430–500 nm region. Rotational analyses have been carried out for 22 of the bands. There are three lower states involved, two with Ω″=2 and one with Ω″=3. Based on our experimental observations and the ab initio calculations on RuC [Shim et al. J. Phys. Chem. 91, 3171 (1987)] the observed bands are interpreted as 3Δi←3Δi and 1Δ←1Δ transitions. The ground state electronic configuration is assigned to 1δ39σ1. Evidence for three excited electronic states (one 3Δi state, one 1Δ state and another state with Ω′=3) and for perturbations in several of their vibrational levels is presented. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract: The effect of feeding pregnant rats with wheat and Bengal gram (black chick pea) diets during the later part of pregnancy on brain growth, enzymes, and free amino acids of glutamate metabolism in 1-day-old rats was investigated. These diets did not induce growth dissociation, and the body and brain weights were equally affected. The concentrations of DNA, RNA, protein, and free α-amino nitrogen in brain decreased significantly and the activities of glutamine synthetase, glutamine transferase, glutaminase 1, glutaminase 11, and glutamate decarboxylase and the concentrations of free amino acids, glutamic acid, glutamine, alanine, and GABA were also decreased. The concentration of aspartic acid, however, was increased. Wheat and Bengal gram diets fortified with lysine and with methionine, cystine, and tryptophan respectively showed various beneficial effects on the changes observed in the brain. A 20% casein diet induced higher body and brain weights and better brain protein and free α-amino nitrogen concentrations than those observed on a 10% casein diet.

Notes: Abstract A comparative study of the number and distribution of chromocentres in interphase nuclei and mean chiasma frequency at diakinesis has been made in three varietal populations of radish (Raphanus sativus L.), “Scarlet Globe”, “Japanese White” and “Chinese White”. The study showed a significant difference between the varietal populations in mean chiasma frequency and number of chromocentres (P〈0.001), indicating that these nuclear characters are genotypically controlled. The correlation analysis revealed a significant negative correlation between chromocentres and chiasma frequency (r= -0.87). It was concluded that an increase in the amount of constitutive heterochromatin, as inferred by chromocentre counts, adversely affects the chiasma frequency and, consequently, genetic recombination in radish.

Notes: Abstract We have analyzed the Hα filtergrams and vector magnetograms of the active region NOAA 7070, in which a 3B/X3.3 flare occurred on February 27, 1992. The average area per sunspot of this active region was in declining phase at the time of the flare. The vector magnetograms indicate that the magnetic field was non-potential at the flaring site. Besides non-potentiality, the longitudinal field gradient was found to be the highest at the region showing initial Hα brightening. Further, in Hα filtergrams no appreciable change in the morphology of the filament tracing the magnetic neutral line was noticed in the post-flare stage. Also, the photospheric vector magnetograms show considerable shear in post-flare magnetic field of the active region. In this paper we present the observations and discuss the possible mechanism responsible for the 3B/X3.3 flare.

Notes: Abstract The Alfvén's critical ionization velocity (CIV) have been observed in a number of laboratory and space experiments. In the Io-torus system, relative velocity of the plasma species in the torus with respect to the neutral species in the Io's atmosphere and neutral cloud exceeds the critical velocity required for CIV. Townsand condition is satisfied up to 6r io , in the neutral cloud when Io passes through the torus. In this paper it is shown that during the passage of Io through the plasma torus, apart from critical velocity and Townsand condition, a number of other requirements are also satisfied. Therefore, it is concluded that, the CIV mechanism must play an important role in ionizing the neutral cloud and enriching the plasma torus.

Notes: Conclusion The problem which seems to remain with the Advaitin's non-realist account is that in giving up both the robust realist use of existenthood and the strong idealist use of cognitive verification, he seems to have weakened the connection between what must be the case and what is experienced. In explaining the nature of cognition, the realist says that existenthood (objects ontologically independent of cognition)must be the case; the idealist says that existenthoodmust not be the case. But in saying that existenthood and non-existenthood are both outside the purview of the explanation of cognition, and then further, in saying that there is only a weak connection — of coherent assumption or best justification through confirmation — between objects and cognition, in other words, refusing to say whatmust be the case, is the non-realist not making his ontology acutely contingent on the current features of cognition? Is his ontology not, in this sense, provisional upon current cognition? As any reader even glancingly acquainted with Advaita would see straightaway, that understanding of ontology as aprovisional state (samv $$\underset{\raise0.3em\hbox{$\smash{\scriptscriptstyle\cdot}$}}{r} $$ tti-sattā) is precisely what the Advaitin has striven to establish. We must leave the examination of the purpose of this effort for another occasion.
