Notes: Efficient algorithms were developed for estimating model parameters from measured data, even in the presence of gross errors. In addition to point estimates of parameters, however, assessments of uncertainty are needed. Linear approximations provide standard errors, but they can be misleading when applied to models that are substantially nonlinear. To overcome this difficulty, profiling methods were developed for the case in which the regressor variables are error free. These methods provide accurate nonlinear confidence regions, but become expensive for a large number of parameters. These profiling methods are modified to error-in-variable-measurement models with many incidental parameters. Laplace's method is used to integrate out the incidental parameters associated with the measurement errors, and then profiling methods are applied to obtain approximate confidence contours for the parameters. This approach is computationally efficient, requires few function evaluations, and can be applied to large-scale problems. It is useful when certain measurement errors (such as input variables) are relatively small, but not so small that they can be ignored.

Notes: An approach is suggested for using ligands to control exchange coupling in multinuclear ions. The idea arose from structural, EPR, and magnetic studies of [PPh4]3 (Scheme 1). Ferromagnetic coupling has been found between the CoII and each CoIII in 3 with J = -22 ± 5 cm-1 (JS1 · S2). It is suggested that dominant antiferromagnetic superexchange is absent because of the strong σ-donor capacity of the tetradentate ligand [k4-PAC*]4- (Fig. 1). The ligand interacts at CoIII primarily with a single d orbital; it is thus best able to participate in superexchange. The interaction makes the unique d orbital strongly σ-antibonding and empty for each d6, S = 1, CoIII ion in 3, that is, unavailable for antiferromagnetic coupling, but available for ferromagnetic pathways by a Goodenough-Kanamori mechanism. By corollary, when any [k4-PAC*]4--type ligand with any magnetic ion Ma in the tetradentate site binds any magnetic ion Mb in the bidentate site, ferromagnetic coupling should be favored provided Ma is not a d9 ion.

Notes: The conventional “cylindrical tube” model of porous media is shown to be inapplicable to flows of nonlinear fluids. A more precise geometric description of the converging-diverging pore geometry appears to enable accurate pressure drop-flow rate descriptions but requires further development.

Notes: A drop size segregation technique leads to a direct measurement of the interdrop coalescence frequencies of equisized droplet swarms in liquid-liquid fluidized beds. Mass transfer between the phases and the use of a tracer dye are avoided. The study includes the effects of highly viscous continuous as well as dispersed phases. Binary liquid solutions of ethylene glycol and distilled water provided aqueous phases of increasing viscosity, and toluene was the second liquid phase. Twenty two liquid-liquid systems including other dispersed liquids, namely, benzene, ethyl acetate, cyclohexane, and carbon tetrachloride, were studied by this technique. In the case of toluene continuous, the drops of water dispersed in toluene were large in size, and they coalesced at unusually high rates up to about 100 times faster than those of toluene dispersed in water. Similarly, anhydrous ethylene glycol dispersed in toluene showed somewhat high coalescence frequencies. All the data excluding these two anomalous systems were analyzed by a stepwise regression technique to yield the best fitting correlation in terms of the most significant dimensionless ratios. For the present, the proposed empirical correlation for the dimensionless parameter [ω D × 105/Vs] containing the coalescence frequency (ω, time-1) as a function of the coalescence number (σ/μcVs) and the viscosity ratio (μd/μc) is as follows: \documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$$({{\omega D \times 10^5 } \mathord{\left/ {\vphantom {{\omega D \times 10^5 } {V_s }}} \right. \kern-\nulldelimiterspace} {V_s }}) = 0.020({\sigma \mathord{\left/ {\vphantom {\sigma {\mu c}}} \right. \kern-\nulldelimiterspace} {\mu c}}V_s)^{1.18} ({{\mu d} \mathord{\left/ {\vphantom {{\mu d} {\mu c}}} \right. \kern-\nulldelimiterspace} {\mu c}})^{0.450} $$\end{document}.

Notes: An automated, solid-state small-angle light scattering apparatus has been constructed for the investigation of polymers; the main features of this system are a bidimensional CCD (charge coupled device) detector with 12-bit resolution and custom-made, user-friendly software for the acquisition and treatment of the scattering data. The miscibility and phase separation kinetics of several bisphenol-A polycarbonate/poly(methyl methacrylate) blends have been investigated using this apparatus. It was found that the rate of phase separation can be altered significantly by replacing part of the polydisperse poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) in the blends by monodisperse PMMA.

Notes: In order to determine the effect of outdoor aging in various areas of the world, poly(vinyl chloride), PVC, compositions were exposed at test sites in Australia, Canada, England, Germany, South Africa, and in Piscataway, New Jersey. These results are related to the climatological data from the different test sites. The data obtained show the effects of a three-year period of exposure on clear and filled, flexible and rigid PVC compositions. The merits of various types of additives are shown in respect to the outdoor aging properties of PVC compounds. It was observed that the exposure conditions vary from severe for Australia and South Africa to mild for England. However, the general results obtained throughout the world correlate well with those from the exposure site in New Jersey.

Notes: Various aspects of polyphosphazene chemistry are reviewed. Stable poly (organophosphazenes) can be prepared from an inorganic precursor, poly(dichlorophosphazene), by careful control of polymerization and substitution reaction conditions. The bulk structure and properties of polyphosphazenes are discussed, and attention is given to those polymers which have promise as useful engineering materials. The successful preparation of stable poly(organophosphazenes) appears to have resulted in a new class of polymers for both specialty and large scale commercial development.
