    Notes: Abstract In aerobic enrichment experiments with a chemostat, using phosphate-limited lactate medium, aSpirillum sp. predominated at the lower range of dilution rates. At the higher dilution rates an (chemoorganotrophic) unidentified rod-shaped bacterium came to the fore. The same result was obtained in competition experiments with pure cultures of the two bacteria. Growth parameters were: Rod,Μ max=0.48 hr−1,k s(PO4 3−)=6.6×10−N M;Spirillum, Μ max=0.24 hr−1· ks(PO4 3−) =2.7×10−8 M. TheSpirillum grew faster than the rod at low dilution rates, not only under phosphate-limitation but also in K+-,Mg2+-, NH4 +-, aspartate-, succinate-, and lactate-limited cultures. Both organisms showed little substrate specificity and could utilize a similar range of carbon and energy sources. The results support the view that part of the diversity among bacteria in the natural environment is based on selection toward substrate concentration. Another set of competition experiments was carried out with pure cultures of two marine obligately chemolithotrophic colorless sulfur bacteria,Thiobacillus thioparus andThiomicrospira pelophila. Tms. pelophila outgrewT. thioparus at low dilution rates under iron limitation, while the reverse was true at high dilution rates. It is concluded that the relatively fast growth ofTms. pelophila at low iron concentration may explain its higher sulfide tolerance. Organisms showing a selection advantage at very low concentrations of limiting substrates appear to have a relatively high surface to volume ratio.

    Notes: Abstract To examine the incidence of interstitial and vascular rejection in pancreas allografts and its impact on graft survival, we studied 36 percutaneous pancreas biopsies and 10 pancreas transplantectomy specimens from 32 patients who had undergone simultaneous pancreas-kidney transplantation. Interstitial rejection (IR) was predominantly found in the biopsies, while vascular rejection (VR) was most prominent in the transplantectomies. Pancreas graft survival was significantly decreased for pancreas grafts that had suffered from vascular rejection when compared to those with only interstitial rejection. Potential rejection markers, i. e., serum amylase, glucose, creatinine, and urinary amylase, did not correlate with histological signs of rejection, although increased levels of serum amylase were, in all but one case, associated with rejection.We conclude that a percutaneous pancreas biopsy remains the most reliable method to determine pancreas rejection, and that by distinguishing between IR andVR, a pancreas biopsy may provide important diagnostic as well as prognostic information.

    Notes: Abstract To assess the drainable surplus of an irrigated area, a methodologybased on a groundwater-balance approach was developed and appliedin Schedule I-B of the Fourth Drainage Project near Faisalabad inPakistan. To determine the seasonal net recharge in this area, anumerical groundwater model was run in inverse mode. The data inputfor the model consisted of the geometry of the aquifer system, theaquifer parameters, and historical watertable elevations. The seasonalnet recharge values, calculated from the individual recharge anddischarge components, were “tuned” with the results of the inversemodelling. The advantage of such an integrated approach is that allthese components are linked. The design net recharge was estimatedfrom the historical net recharge of the wettest monsoon in the studyperiod. Its rainfall recharge values were then substituted for those of adesign monsoon. In this substitution procedure, the rainfall rechargemethodology and parameters were adopted from the tuning procedure.From this design net recharge, estimates could be made of the requireddrainable surplus, with and without drainage simulation.
