Notes: This paper reviews recent efforts to describe complex patterns in isotropic fluids (Rayleigh–Bénard convection) as well as in anisotropic liquid crystals (electro-hydrodynamic convection) when driven away from equilibrium. A numerical scheme for solving the full hydrodynamic equations is presented that allows surprisingly well for a detailed comparison with experiments. The approach can also be useful for a systematic construction of models (order parameter equations). © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract Using the Gorkov theory as modified by Eilenberger we derive a consistent calculation scheme for the density of states near the upper critical field. This method applies to arbitrary impurity concentration and becomes in particular simple in the clean limit. Special attention was paid to the effect of anisotropic impurity scattering (p-waves).

Notes: Based on the reformulation of the Gor'kov equations by Eilenberger, Larkin, and Ovchinnikov, we propose a calculational method for transport coefficients in clean, type II superconductors. For the ultrasonic attenuation rate α (q∥B) and the thermal conductivity κ (▽T ⊥ B) we give analytical expressions near the upper critical field H c2 at low temperatures. Comparison with experiment leads to satisfactory agreement with the theoretical results.

Notes: Abstract In this work the static spin correlation of an isotropicX—Y-chain with free ends at zero temperature is dealt with. Following the method of Lieb, Schultz, Mattis the problem is reduced to the evaluation of a determinant of the Cauchy type. With regard to the transverse correlation function we find a change from aR −3/4 to aR −1/2 behavior if the correlated spins move away from the boundary at fixed mutual distanceR.

Notes: Abstract For ax-y spin chain with free ends the dynamical correlation function is examined at zero temperature. The critical exponents are shown to be severely influenced by the boundaries. In addition new results pertaining to cyclic boundary conditions are derived within an appropriate limit procedure. In particular the asymptotic behavior of the selfcorrelation function agrees with the prediction of a continuum version of this model.
