Notizen: Abstract— An assay in vitro utilizing [6−3H)glucose as precursor for synthesis of lipids, proteins, RNA and DNA was developed for incubated slices of rat cerebral cortex. The developmental changes in synthesis of macromolecules were followed during differentiation of rat cerebral cortex. The incorporation of glucose into lipids and proteins decreased 10-fold in incubated slices of cerebral cortex during progression from foetal to adult ages. In contrast, the specific radioactivities of RNA and DNA in incubated slices increased from the values at 3 days prepartum to peaks at 2–4 weeks postpartum.

Notizen: The effects of phenylpyruvate and hyperphenylalaninemia on the incorporation of [6-3H]glucose into lipids, proteins and nucleic acids were examined in differentiating and adult rat brain. Foetal brain was most sensitive to inhibition by phenylpyruvate in vitro, with significant effects occurring at 2·5 mM for labelling of lipids and proteins and at 5 mM for labelling RNA and DNA. Older age groups were less affected, and cortical slices from adult brain were slightly or not at all affected by phenylpyruvate. The inhibition by phenylpyruvate of incorporation of [6-3H]glucose into nucleic acids, proteins, and lipids could be further distinguished by the reversibility of the effect on nucleic acid and protein synthesis at high levels of glucose and the irreversibility of the effect on lipid synthesis. Lipid synthesis was most sensitive to inhibition by phenylpyruvate at the stage of fatty acid synthesis, with lesser effect on the formation of glyceride glycerol.Exposure in utero of the foetal brain to maternal hyperphenylalaninemia resulted in reduction of 26–38 per cent in the subsequent incorporation in vitro of [6-3H]glucose into lipids, proteins, RNA and DNA of brain slices from foetal animals. Feeding hyperphenylalaninemic pregnant rats a high-glucose diet significantly protected the foetal brain from the neurotoxicity accompanying the hyperphenylalanemia.

Notizen: The dynamics of weed populations were ana lysed in intensified cereal-based cropping sys tems of the northern Guinea savanna in Nigeria, A total of four common weed associations were identified through cluster analysis. Five factors describing soil fertility conditions and field his tory best differentiated the weed communities according to a discriminant model. The analysis shows that maize-based cropping systems with a high frequency of cereal cropping and a low fre quency of noncereal cropping tended to be domi nated by weeds such as Commelina spp. and Kyllinga squamulata. As soil fertility declined, Vernonia spp. and Eclipta prostrata became more important. Increased frequency of noncereal crops in mixed cropping with cereals was associ ated with reduced incidence of weeds such as Leucas martinicensis, Oldenlandia corymbosa, Spermacoce verticillata, Litdwigia hyssopifolia, Celosia laxa, and,Ipomoea spp. Further diversifi cation of cereal-based systems to obtain a re duced frequency of cereals is likely to increase the incidence of Dactvloctenium aegyptium in crop fields. The information provides guidance for technology development and transfer on weed control for intensifying systems in the northern Guinea savanna of Africa.

Notizen: The case is reported of a 61-year-old man with a 25-year history of normolipaemic xanthomatosis involving almost the whole integument. He also presented a γ-G-paraproteinaemia, and a bleeding tendency manifested by petechial haemorrhages in the xanthomatous skin, by intestinal haemorrhages and by a subdural haematoma.

Beschreibung / Inhaltsverzeichnis: Abstract Introduction: Pain in childhood still seems to be a major problem. In this study we investigated parents’ opinion about the frequency of pain in their children and the efficacy of pain treatment. Method: Parents of 93 children (average age: 11–14 years) answered a questionnaire. The participants were asked to evaluate the frequency of pain and the success of pain treatment in their children. They were also asked about their family structure. Results: The result confirmed that perioperative pain therapy in children was not satisfactory. However, the majority of parents were satisfied with the outpatient pain therapy. Conclusion: In order to achieve adequate and successful pain therapy in childhood, better information of the parents and better medical education of doctors is mandatory.

Notizen: Summary In rabbits, guinea pigs, and rats an ultrathin coat containing carbohydrates has been demonstrated in transmission electron microscopy by means of the highly specific Concanavalin-A histochemical reaction over the endothelial aortic surface. In rabbits fed on a hypercholesterolic diet in aortic areas where the Concanavalin-A reactivity of the endothelial surface is lost, an amorphous thick deposit is found.

Notizen: Summary In rabbits on a hypercholesterolic diet, the surface of the plaques, at scanning electron microscope examination, looks discontinuous even in specimens obtained with the “critical point” device. Discontinuities of the endothelial lining of the plaques are found also in ultrathin sections by transmission electron microscopy: foam cells do then constitute the superficial row. In proliferative lesions, smooth muscle cells are actively surfacing, reaching sometimes the lumen.
