    Notes: The influence of the InAs coverage on the size and density of coherently strained InAs islands was investigated. At moderate InAs coverages the photoluminescence signal reflects the Gaussian size distribution of small coherently strained islands. However, before the coherently strained islands transform into dislocated ones the Gaussian line shape of their photoluminescence signal changes and a narrow peak appears on the low-energy tail. We attribute this change to an accumulation of coherently strained islands at a maximum size before dislocated island transformation occurs. Effects of luminescence from dislocated islands, size-dependent relaxation processes, capture efficiencies, and dot-dot coupling are also discussed. However, our calculations and the magnetophotoluminescence, as well as the photovoltage experiments, confirm our interpretation of a size accumulation process of coherently strained islands. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: We study size quantization effects in InAs self-assembled quantum dots (QDs) that are embedded in GaAs. Using capacitance, photoluminescence and photovoltage spectroscopy, we correlate the measured quantized level energies with the quantum dot sizes and densities obtained from transmission electron microscopy. With increasing dot size, we observe a strong redshift of the QD features in all our data. In the capacitance spectra, a band gap renormalization of the two-dimensional wetting layer system appears when the first excited QD state crosses the wetting layer ground state. The relative size dependence and absolute energetic position of the QD transitions determined with photoluminescence provide some information about the influence of lateral confinement and height of the QD. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Abstract: Projectile fragmentation of 238U in a lead target was investigated at a bombarding energy of 750 A MeV. Isotopic production cross sections of about 250 different projectile fragments in the element range Z= 30–53 were measured with the FRagment Separator (FRS). The magnetic selection and the kinematical analysis of the measured isotopes allowed to disentangle fission and fragmentation residues. The mass loss of these residues indicates a violent collision where a large amount of energy is dissipated. The position of the fragmentation corridor defined by the measured residues was used to determine an effective proton-evaporation barrier.

    Notes: Abstract At the projectile-fragment separator FRS of GSI, relativistic secondary beams of about 520 MeV/nucleon were produced by fragmentation of a primary beam of58Ni at 650 MeV/nucleon in a beryllium target. By means of aΔE—Bρ—TOF measurement, the fragments have been identified and their charge-changing probabilities in targets of CH2, C, Al, and Pb have been determined. We describe the results for the total charge-changing cross sections in this first paper, whereas a second article deals with the partial charge-changing cross sections. At the drip line, the measured charge-changing cross sections exhaust close to 100% of the total interaction cross sections as calculated with semiempirical models. The measurements at the proton drip line with low-Z targets indicate that only a very small increase of the cross sections may be observed, whereas the measurements with a lead target show that no significant increase of the total charge-changing cross sections is present which would be a hint for low-lying dipole strength. Our experimental data are compared to Glauber-type calculations.

    Notes: Abstract As part of a comprehensive study of uranium fragmentation at relativistic energies at the GSI projectile fragment separator, FRS, inclusive neutron-removal cross sections have been measured for severalxn channels at projectile energies of 600 and 950A MeV using targets of Al, Cu and Pb. The variation of the experimental cross sections with target nuclear charge is used to disentangle nuclear and electromagnetic contributions. The electromagnetic cross sections agree surprisingly well with a simple harmonic oscillator calculation of giant dipole resonances based on measured photonuclear cross sections and do not require an extra enhancement of the two-phonon giant dipole excitation as concluded from similar measurements with197Au.

    Notes: Abstract An attempt is made to explain the infrared radiation observed for several quasars and Seyfert galaxies as thermal radiation of a dust envelope surrounding the cores of these objects. Two kinds of dust particles (graphite and silica) are taken into consideration. It is shown that the observed spectral behaviour and the luminosity in the infrared can be introduced as thermal radiation of silica grains. In the case of 3C 273 one finds that the radius of the dust envelope is about 50 pc and the total mass of dust is about 600M ⊙.

    Notes: Abstract   The human pathogenic microorganism Streptococcus pyogenes can resist against phagocytic attack of human granulocytes. Streptococcal M protein and hyaluronic acid were identified as virulence factors involved in this protection. So far, no experiments have been reported which describe the contribution of both components together in one system. We used the chicken embryo as an in vivo phagocytosis model to investigate the role of both components on the virulence of streptococci. For this, isogeneic mutants of group A streptococcal strains (GAS) which lack hyaluronic acid capsule (cap–) or M protein (M–) expression were used for infection and their virulence was compared with laboratory strains which had lost their ability to produce one or both virulence factors after long-time laboratory passages on blood agar. The experiments revealed that strains producing both M protein and hyaluronic capsule were highly virulent. Only 1–10 colony-forming units were enough to cause a 50% lethality of 12-day-old chicken embryos. Those strains lacking one of these components showed a significant decrease in virulence. Finally, strains which failed to express either hyaluronic acid or M protein showed an additional tenfold decrease in virulence. This indicates a partial contribution of both M protein and hyaluronic acid to the virulence of GAS in the chicken embryo.

    Notes: Abstract The vir regulon of group A streptococci (GAS) organizes the expression of several bacterial virulence factors under the control of the Mga regulator. Previously, the genes encoding the Mga regulator (mga), M and M-related proteins (emm, mrp, enn) and C5a peptidase (scpA) were reported to be clustered on the streptococcal genome in a core vir regulon. In the present study, the genomic regions of a serotype M49 strain upstream of mga and downstream of scpA were sequenced to assess the boundaries of the vir regulon. In the upstream region, an operon was identified that may be potentially involved in substrate transport and is independent from Mga regulation. In the downstream region, another Mga-controlled, scpA-cotranscribed gene was detected. This gene termed orfX encoded a 385-amino acid (aa) potential surface protein of unknown function. No binding of serum proteins to a recombinant ORFX was detectable and phagocytosis resistance of an orfX mutant remained unchanged. Downstream of orfX, another Mga-independent gene determined the 3′ end of the core vir regulon. Utilizing the M49 wild type, a mga – mutant and comparative Northern blot hybridization, genes encoding the capsule synthesis machinery, streptokinase and streptolysin O, as well as erythrogenic toxin A and DNase C were found to be Mga independent. In contrast, expression of the genes encoding the cysteine protease SpeB, streptococcin A and the oligopeptide permease was reduced in the mga – mutant. This indicated that in addition to the core vir regulon, Mga directly or indirectly controls a number of genes dispersed throughout the GAS genome.
