    Notes: Abstract The working mechanism of the differential CO2 sensor inherently contains several calibration problems. These difficulties are highlighted and some possibilities for eliminating them are discussed. Finally, a simple error analysis is shown for optimizing the composition of the standard solutions to be used for the calibration of the differential CO2 probe in blood electrolyte analyzers.

    Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Das braune Fettgewebe von Maus, Ratte und Igel wurde elektronen-mikroskopisch untersucht, um die Frage seiner vegetativen Innervation zu klären. Die Zellen des braunen Fettgewebes bilden einen dichten, oberflächlich an ein Epithel erinnernden Verband, der von zahlreichen Kapillaren durchsetzt wird. Jede Fettzelle wird von einer dünnen Basalmembran allseits umschlossen. Das Cytoplasma dieser multiloculären Elemente enthält eine erstaunlich große Zahl von Mitochondrien, die meistens eng aneinander lagern. In der Matrix einzelner Mitochondrien finden sich gelegentlich kristalloide Einschlüsse unbekannter Zusammensetzung. Golgiapparat und Ergastoplasmamembranen sind, wenngleich spärlich, entwickelt. Die starke Vesikulation, die sich in der Oberfläche der Zellen abspielt, kann als Ausdruck einer Mikropinozytose im Dienste der Lipidaufnahme oder als Äquivalent einer Abgabe von Fettsäuren an die Blutkapillaren gedeutet werden. Auch die Endothelzellen der Blutkapillaren des braunen Fettgewebes zeichnen sich durch eine starke mikropinozytotische Vesikulation aus. Die aus dem sympathicus stammenden paravasculären Nerven des braunen Fettgewebes bestehen aus Bündeln markloser Axone mit vereinzelten Granulärvesikeln („dense cored vesicles“), einer großen Zahl von Mikrotubuli mit einem Zentralfilament und spärlichen kleinen Mitochondrien. Von den paravaskulären Nerven ziehen zunächst kleine Bündel, dann einzelne marklose Fasern in den Interzellularraum; sie werden hier von Schwannschen Zellen unvollständig umschlossen. Sehr dünne nackte Axone lagern sich den Fettzellen eng an, teilweise in Vertiefungen ihrer Oberfläche eingebettet. In diesen terminalen Axon-abschnitten, die vom Plasmalemm der Fettzellen durch deren Basalmembran getrennt sind, kommen Gruppen synaptischer Bläschen vor. Die Kontaktstellen zwischen Fettzellen und terminalen Nervenfasern werden als Orte der Abgabe von Katecholaminen (Noradrenalin) gedeutet.
    Notes: Summary Brown adipose tissue from the interscapular region of mouse, rat and hedgehog was investigated electron microscopically in order to clarify the question of its sympathetic innervation. Brown adipose tissue consists of densely packed groups of polygonal cells thus superficially resembling epithelial tissue. It is permeated by numerous blood vessels and capillaries. Each individual fat cell is enveloped by a thin basement lamina. The multilocular cytoplasm of the elements contains many glycogen granules and surprisingly high amounts of mitochondria lying very closely together. Within the matrix of single mitochondria occasionally crystalloid inclusions of unknown composition can be found. Golgi apparatus and ergastoplasm membranes occur. The marked vesiculation of the cellular surface can be regarded as an expression of micropinocytotic activity serving either the uptake of lipids or the release of fatty acids into the blood stream. The endothelial cells of the capillaries of the brown fat are also characterized by numerous micropinocytotic vesicles. The paravascular nerves, originating from the sympathetic system, consist of bundles of non-myelinated fibres containing rather few dense-cored vesicles, a great number of microtubules with a central filament and some small mitochondria. Smaller bundles and single non-myelinated axons leave the paravascular nerves and enter the intercellular space where they are incompletely surrounded by Schwann cells. Very thin naked axons can be found closely attached to the fat cells, not infrequently embedded in invaginations of their surface. These terminal parts of the axons, separated from the plasmalemma of the fat cell by the basement membrane, contain groups of synaptic vesicles. Places where the terminals of the axons come in to synaptoid contact with the fat cell are interpreted as sites of liberation of catecholamines, presumably noradrenaline.

    Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Die elektronenmikroskopische Untersuchung des Zwischenlappens der Katzenhypophyse ergibt folgendes: 1. Die Pars intermedia besteht aus einem dichten Gefüge von Epithel- und Palisadenzellen, das von zahlreichen marklosen Nervenfäserchen durchsetzt wird. Man kann zwei Typen von Epithelzellen unterscheiden, die grob- und die feingekörnten Elemente. Die Palisadenzellen, deren Cytoplasma viele Filamente enthält, werden als gliöse Zellen angesehen. 2. Die in den Zwischenlappen eindringenden Nervenfasern verlaufen zunächst in lockeren schmalen Bündeln in erweiterten Interzellularspalten, in die Mikrovilli und Cilien der Epithelzellen hineinragen. Die Faserbündel brechen in einzelne Nervenfäserchen auf, die zum Teil in das Cytoplasma von Palisadenzellen eingebettet sind. Ihre Endigungen bilden an der Oberfläche der Epithelzellen Synapsen; sie sind teilweise auch in tiefe Einsenkungen des Cytoplasmas der Epithelzellen eingelagert (Invagination). 3. Die Nervenendigungen in der Pars intermedia der Hypophyse der Katze treten in folgenden Formen auf: a) Synapsen mit synaptischen Bläschen (Typus der cholinergen Synapse), b) Synapsen mit synaptischen Bläschen und kleinen massendichten Granula (Typus der adrenergen bzw. aminergen Synapse) und c) Synapsen mit synaptischen Bläschen und neurosekretorischen Elementargranula. 4. Die Frage, welche Bedeutung die mitgeteilten Befunde für unsere Vorstellungen vom Wesen der sekretorischen Neurone und deren Definition haben, wird erörtert. Es wird vorgeschlagen, die Octapeptid-Hormone bildenden Neurone in Analogie zu den cholinergen und adrenergen bzw. aminergen Neuronen als peptiderge Neurone zu bezeichnen und von peptidergen Synapsen dann zu sprechen, wenn die Endigungen dieser Neurone mit Zellen endokriner Organe in Kontakt treten.
    Notes: Summary The pars intermedia of the cat's hypophysis has been investigated by means of electron-microscopy. It was found that: 1. The pars intermedia contains a tangle of epithelial cells, palisade cells and a great number of unmyelinated nerve fibres. Two types of epithelial cells can be distinguished, the one containing large and the other small granules. The palisade cells are considered to be glial cells. 2. The nerve fibres entering the pars intermedia are at first running in small bundles passing through enlarged intercellular clefts into which microvilli as well as cilia of the epithelial cells are protruding. Later, the fibres of these bundles are separated in a fan-like fashion. The single fibres may be surrounded by the cytoplasm of a palisade cell. The terminals of these fibres form synapses at the surface of epithelial cells. Frequently endings are found to be invaginated into the cytoplasm of an epithelial cell. 3. In the pars intermedia of the cat's hypophysis there are several types of nerve endings, namely a) synapses containing synaptic vesicles (= type of the cholinergic synapse) b) synapses containing small vesicles with an electron-dense core (= type of the adrenergic synapse) and c) synapses containing synaptic vesicles and, in addition, elementary granules of neurosecretory material. The possible significance of the findings is discussed with regard to the present concepts concerning secretory neurones and the respective terminology. It is proposed that in analogy to cholinergic, adrenergic and aminergic neurones those nerve cells which synthesize octapeptide hormones should be termed peptidergic neurones. It is further suggested to speak of peptidergic synapses if the terminals of such neurones are establishing contact with cells of an endocrine organ.
