Notes: Abstract Rhodospirillum centenum exhibited a number of general properties typically observed in nonsulfur purple bacteria, but also displayed a number of unusual characteristics that include: (1) conversion of the vibrioid/spiral cells to thick-walled cysts under certain growth conditions; (2) absence of O2 repression of photopigment synthesis; (3) synthesis of “R-bodies”; and (4) swarming motility on agar surfaces that allows macroscopic observation of colony phototaxis. The unusual characteristics indicate that Rsp.centenum will prove to be a valuable experimental system for investigating various basic problems, especially in connection with photosensory phenomena and the regulation of photopigment synthesis by dioxygen and light. The present comparative study of 13 strains was undertaken to further define the Rsp. centenum biotype.

Notes: Abstract Most photosynthetic microorganisms have the capability of photosensing light quality and intensity. Movement of motile photosynthetic microorganisms to locales that offer optimal physical and chemical conditions for light-dependent growth provides obvious selective advantages. Among phototrophs, many cyanobacteria and algae migrate towards or away from the direction of light, a process termed phototaxis. In contrast, anoxygenic photosynthetic bacteria are believed to respond to changes in light intensity in a manner that is not related to the direction of light, a process that is often described by the term "photophobic". We recently reported that "swarm colonies" of the purple photosynthetic bacterium Rhodospirillum centenum are capable of macroscopically visible phototactic behavior. In the present study we further characterize the phototactic behavior of R. centenum swarm colonies and provide an action spectrum that delineates regions of the spectrum that elicit positive and negative phototaxis.

Notes: Abstract The indole alkaloid ibogaine (NIH 10567, Endabuse) is currently being examined for its potential utility in the treatment of cocaine and opioid addiction. However, a clearly defined molecular mechanism of action for ibogaine's putative anti-addictive properties has not been delineated. Radioligand binding assays targeting over 50 distinct neurotransmitter receptors, ion channels, and select second messenger systems were employed to establish a broad in vitro pharmacological profile for ibogaine. These studies revealed that ibogaine interacted with a wide variety of receptors at concentrations of 1–100 µM. These included the mu, delta, kappa, opiate, 5HT2, 5HT3, and muscarinic1 and 2 receptors, and the dopamine, norepinephrine, and serotonin uptake sites. In addition, ibogaine interacted withN-methyl-d-aspartic acid (NMDA) associated ion and sodium ion channels as determined by the inhibition of [3H]MK-801 and [3H]bactrachotoxin A 20-α-benzoate binding (BTX-B), respectively. This broad spectrum of activity may in part be responsible for ibogaine's putative anti-addictive activity.

Notes: Abstract: Based on a microscopic density functional theory we calculate the internal structure of the three-phase contact line between liquid, vapor, and a confining wall as well as the morphology of liquid wetting films on a substrate exhibiting a chemical step. We present a refined numerical analysis of the nonlocal density functional which describes the interface morphologies and the corresponding line tensions. These results are compared with those predicted by a more simple phenomenological interface displacement model. Except for the case that the interface exhibits large curvatures, we find that the interface displacement model provides a quantitatively reliable description of the interfacial structures.

Notes: Abstract Two surface antigens ofEimeria nieschulzi merozoites were characterized by monoclonal antibodies (Mcab) as follows: an antigen of 31 (reducing conditions), 25 and 31 kDa (nonreducing conditions), by Mcab A1F6; and an antigen of 52 and 30 kDa (reducing conditions) or 42 kDa (nonreducing conditions), by Mcab H7. The localization of the antigens in fluorescence and electron micrographs is presented. Despite being accessible to antibodies on live (nonpermeabilized) parasites, neither antigens were significantly labelled using lactoperoxidase radioiodination.

Notes: Abstract The behavior of a water soluble calixarene ligand has been investigated in an (NH4)2SO4/polyethylene glycol-2000 (PEG) aqueous biphasic system. Spectroscopic measurements indicate that 4-sulfonic-calix-6-arene partitions preferentially to the polymer-rich phase in this system. The utility of this ligand as a metal ion extractant was also investigated. The addition of the calixarene (10−2M in initial PEG-rich stock solution) did not significantly enhance the partitioning of Na+, Cs+, Sr2+, Ba2+, Co2+, Cd2+, or UO 2 2+ from the (NH4)2SO4-rich to the PEG-rich phase. The partitioning behavior of these metal ions is dependent, rather, on their Gibbs free energy of hydration (ΔGhyd *).

Description / Table of Contents: Corrosion-protected connecting devices. Recent developments. First StandardsWith connecting devices, manufacture and materials should be attuned to each other in order to attain optimum results. Through cold forming, higher yield limits can be reached which prevail even at temperatures up to 400° C and entail considerable savings in size.According to German Standards DIN 267, Sheet 11, the conventional specifications for the material alone are superseded by quality specifications. While meeting the minimum requirements to be guaranteed, the manufacturer is free to choose, from among the steels of the specified group, those steels which in conjunction with the manufacturing process produce the best results.Testing and acceptance conditions should be adapted to the application conditions. Previously standardized, conventional testing methods should be modified. The tensile test should be carried out on entire bolts; nuts subjected to the load test should be exposed to the rupture load corresponding to the quality of the bolts to which they are to be fitted. Practical experience and the results of calibration tests do not suggest that the corrosion strength of the connecting devices would be impaired by cold forming under such conditions. Appearance and corrosion resistance can be improved by electro-polishing. With nitrogen-alloyed austenitic chrome-nickel steels, the mechanical strength characteristics can be improved still further while the torrosion resistance remains at least as good.
