    Notes: The product state-resolved dynamics of the photon-initiated reaction H+N2O→OH×(2Π3/2,v′,N′)+N2 has been studied using Doppler-resolved laser induced fluorescence (LIF) at a mean collision energy of 143 kJ mol−1 (≡1.48 eV). Nascent OH(v′=0,1) rovibrational population measurements indicate that only a small fraction of the available energy is channeled into the internal modes of the OH reaction products, as is consistent with previous work at other collision energies. State-resolved angular scattering distributions have been determined and are found to depend sensitively on product OH rovibrational quantum state. For the v′=0 products, the angular scattering distributions are forward-backward peaking at low N′, changing to sideways peaking at high N′. OH products born in the v′=1,N′=6 state possess forward-backward peaking angular scattering distributions, similar to the OH(v′=0) products born with intermediate N′. In addition to these findings, the experiments have allowed the precise determination of the OH quantum state-resolved distributions of kinetic energy releases and, hence, by energy balance, of internal energies accessed in the N2 co-products. The product state-resolved kinetic energy disposals are found to broaden somewhat, and to favor higher kinetic energy disposal, as the internal energy of the OH is increased. The internal energies accessed in the OH and N2 products are therefore (anti-)correlated. More interestingly, the kinetic energy distributions are bimodal, particularly for OH(v′=0) fragments born in high N′, and for those born in v′=1. This finding is attributed to the operation of two microscopic reaction mechanisms, which are probably associated with H atom attack at the two ends of the NNO target molecule. The results are discussed in the light of previous experimental and theoretical work. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Antigen presenting cells (APC) similar to immature dendritic cells can be generated in vitro from bone marrow precursors. The authors have compared the yield, the phenotype and the function of murine bone marrow cells cultured for 7 or 11 days in either granulocyte macrophage colony stimulating factor alone (GM BMAPC) or in combination with interleukin-4 (GM/IL-4 BMAPC). The results showed that GM/IL-4 BMAPC expressed the highest levels of MHC Class 2 molecules, CD86 /B7-2 and CD80/B7-1 co-stimulatory molecules and the lowest levels of F4/80 macrophage marker. However, when these APC were pulsed with BCG culture filtrate antigen or PPD they were not correspondingly more effective at stimulating activated T lymphocytes in vitro or priming naive T lymphocytes in vivo. Also, in contrast to GM BMAPC, high backgrounds recorded following injections of GM/IL-4 BMAPC without antigen were not consistently reduced by lowering the dose and irradiating the cells prior to administration. The authors conclude that the degree of maturity of BMAPC varies with culture conditions and that this may be an important consideration where BMAPC are to be used in vivo in immunotherapeutic regimens.

    Notes: The ability of B cells to act as effective antigen-presenting cells is a source of debate which centres on the degree of activation of either B cells or T cells. We have investigated whether B cells treated with interleukin 4 (IL-4) can express the two signals required to activate T cells: MHC Class 2/antigenic peptide complexes(signal 1) and the costimulatory molecules B7-1 and B7-2 (signal 2). We have also determined whether these cells could activate atitigen-experienced T cells in vitro and whether they could prime naive T cells in vivo. We found that B cells expressed abutidant MHC Class 2 molecules and moderate levels of B7-2 after 24 h culture in IL-4 with or without purified protein derivative (PPD) but B7-1 was not detectable. PPD-pulsed, IL-4 treated B cells induced antigeti-experienced T cells to proliferate in vitro but these cells failed to prime naive T cells in vivo when injected itito mice. We conclude that signals, in addition to those mduced with IL-4, are required for B cells to initiate an immutie respotise to atitigen.

    Notes: 4,8-Dimethoxy-5-(tosyloxy)-1-naphthaldehyde (1) and 8-methoxy-5-(tosyloxy)-1-naphthaldehyde (2) crystallize such that the formyl groups approach coplanarity with the naphthalene rings. 4′,8′-Dimethoxy-5′-(tosyloxy)-1′-acetonaphthone (4), however, crystallizes such that the acetyl group approaches orthogonality to the naphthalene ring. In all three compounds the methoxy group and carbonyl groups exhibit a leaning effect typical of nucleophile–electrophile interactions in 1,8-disubstituted naphthalenes. 8-(Benzoyloxy)-4-methoxy-1-naphthaldehyde (3) crystallizes with the formyl group nearly coplanar to the naphthalene ring and does not exhibit the leaning effect. It is suggested that these structural differences are largely due to differences in the steric requirements of formyl and acetyl groups.

    Notes: An exchange took place at the end of the nineteenth century between William Rainey Harper and Dwight L. Moody that makes little sense to those who study American intellectual life at the end of the twentieth. What is remarkable about this incident is not that Harper, the president of the University of Chicago, a new institution dedicated to promoting science, advanced research and graduate education, invited Moody, the leading revivalist of the Gilded Age, to speak at one of America's most promising new universities. To be sure, our understanding of the educational reforms associated with the founding of research universities rarely encompasses the transatlantic revivals of Moody and his song leader, Ira Sankey. And Harper's invitation to Moody could reasonably be compared to the contemporary practice of conferring honorary degrees on civic leaders and celebrities not known for their interest in higher education but whose reputation could well benefit the degree-granting institution. What is exceptional in this exchange is Harper's assessment of the similarities between his university and Moody's revivals. While Harper acknowledged the use of different means, he thought his and Moody's aims were the same. ‘I do not understand’, Harper wrote, ‘that you, as a matter of fact, represent any other position than that which is actually maintained here at the University. The differences between us are merely differences of detail.’
