Notes: [Auszug] IN a recent communication1, Shen, Korff and Neuburg have reported the tritium contents of three Antarctic snows collected near Ross Island during 1960-61. The concentration, 82 + 8 T.U., for surface snow representing September-early December 1960 they hold to be remarkably high compared with other ...

Notes: [Auszug] ALMOST ten years ago, a group including N. C. Heglund and myself found that African women of certain tribes can move heavy loads for free - that is, they can carry up to 20% of their body weight on their heads or supported by a strap looped around their foreheads without ...

Notes: [Auszug] The summation process is most often carried out with the help of a digital computer; but several alternative methods have been suggested, for example, the special electronic computer designed by Pepinsky1, which presents the result as a contoured electron-density map on a cathode-ray tube. The use ...

Notes: Abstract The infestation pattern in a bean field is related to the effects of shelter on the activity of the migrants and developing apterous colonies.

Notes: Abstract In this article I examine an example of sympathy -- the actions of one woman who rescued Jews during their persecution in Nazi Europe. I argue that this woman's account of her actions here suggests that sympathy is a primitive response to the suffering of another. By “primitive” here I mean: first, that these responses are immediate and unthinking; and second, that these responses are explanatorily basic, that they cannot be explained in terms of some more fundamental feature of human nature -- such as some particular desire or sentiment that we possess. My conclusion is then that our sympathetic responses are themselves partially constitutive of our conception of what is to be a human being.
