    Notes: Abstract To the origins and evolution of Indomalayan shrews, we investigated the chromosomal variations of 14 species ofCrocidura from SE Asia. Intraspecific polymorphism was mainly due to variation in the number of short chromosomal arms butC. lepidura andC. hutanis showed a polymorphism due to a centric fusion. The undifferentially stained karyotypes were similar in 9 species, all possessing 2n=38 and FN=54–56 (68);C. fuliginosa had 2n=40 and FN=54–58. These karyotypes are close to the presumed ancestral state for the genusCrocidura. Four species from Sulawesi had a reduced diploid number (2n=30–34), a trend not observed among other SE Asian species but present in few Palaearctic taxa. Compared to the apparent stasis of karyotypic evolution observed among other SE Asian species, the high degree of interspecific differences reported among Sulawesian shrews is unusual and needs further investigation. Stasis and reduction in diploid number found in both Indomalayan and Palaearctic species suggest that these two groups share a common ancestry. This is in sharp contrast to most Afrotropical species which evolved towards higher diploid and fundamental numbers. The zoogeographical implications of these results are discussed.

    Notes: Abstract In this study the effects of 30 min heat-shock, ranging from 42°C to 46°C, on survival, protein synthesis and HSP72 expression were investigated in primary rat neuronal cultures. Heat-shock of 44°C resulted in a complete, but transient inhibition of protein synthesis which recovered within 24 h. 46°C heat-shock resulted in an irreversible inhibition of protein synthesis and complete neuronal loss within 24 h. Cycloheximide treatment of neuronal cultures resulted in aggravation of neuronal cell damage after heat-shock of 44°C, indicating that the capacity for recovery of the overall protein synthesis is an important survival factor. In addition, the reduction of neuronal cell damage mediated by heat conditioning was abolished by cycloheximide treatment, indicating that the function of new proteins is important for induced thermotolerance. Induction of the strictly inducible member of the heat-shock protein 70kDa family, HSP72, was found in those few astrocytes which were contaminating the neuronal cell cultures, but not in neurons. These results indicate that newly synthesised proteins other than HSP72 are likely to mediate neuronal protection following heat shock in our experiments. These findings raise the possibility that induced tolerance may not necessarily be mediated by HSP72.

Результаты показы вают, что отклонения можно с ус пехом объяснить только у тех ядер, у кот орых возможна примес ная конфигурация, котора я дает к магнитному моменту вклад линейный в коэф фициенте примеси.
    Notes: Abstract Deviations of nuclear magnetic moments of oddA nuclei from the Schmidt lines are explained by configuration mixing. The general results obtained are applied to several nuclei and the magnitudes of the admixture coefficients necessary to explain the deviations are estimated. The results show that the deviations can be successfully explained only for those nuclei, in which possible configuration admixtures give contributions to the magnetic moment linear in the admixture coefficient.

    Notes: Abstract 48Ca, the lightest double beta decay candidate, has been until now the only one simple enough to be treated exactly in the nuclear shell model. Thus, the ββ(2ν) half-life measurement, reported here, provides a unique test of the nuclear physics involved in the ββ matrix element calculation. Enriched 48Ca sources of two different thicknesses have been exposed in a time projection chamber, and yield T 2ν 1/2=(4.3+2.4 -1.1[stat.]±1.4[syst.])×1019 years, compatible with the shell model calculations. The consequences of this result for the shell model calculation of the ββ(2ν) rate are briefly discussed.
