    Notes: Abstract  In this paper an explanation for the formation of swirl past three-dimensional bend combinations in pipe flows is given. Supportive and comparative swirl measurements past a double bend combination and past a combination of an asymmetric diaphragm and a following angle bend are presented and discussed.

    Notes: Abstract  The thrust of this paper is to validate, test and compare several Coherent Structure eduction methods utilizing the same data base. The flow chosen was that of an experimental study of a plane, incompressible, fully developed turbulent two-stream mixing layer. The mixing layer was chosen as the data base because it has been studied extensively from a coherent structures point of view. In addition, its characteristics (similarity, convection velocities, etc.) are well documented. There are also no wall effects so that comparisons between techniques are simplified. The data was collected from hot wire rakes with good spatial resolution thus allowing the contributors to apply and test different structure eduction techniques. The techniques chosen for discussion and used here have found wide utilization over the past decade, and all hold forth the promise of extensive application in the future. These include: Conditional Sampling (Vorticity-based and other methods); Wavelets; Pattern Recognition Analysis; Proper Orthogonal Decomposition; Stochastic Estimation; Topological Concept-based methods; Full Field Methods (e.g., pseudo flow visualization). All are illustrated by application to the mixing layer data base, and comparisons made between the results. This common study has shown that direct comparisons between results of several methods are now possible. Good quantitive and qualitative agreement between the different methods have been observed as well as some differences noted. As an example, the size of the averaged structures computed from the various methods compare to within 6 percent.

    Notes: Abstract  In this paper an experimental investigation of a starting water flow downstream of a backward-facing step is described. The Reynolds number of the asymptotic steady flow is Re≈4300 based on the step height of s=2 cm and the free stream velocity of U=21.4 cm/s. Velocity measurements were performed with video-based DPIV (Digital Particle Image Velocimetry) at a sampling frequency of 25 Hz. The main purpose of this study is to reveal the temporal development of global structures which could not be analyzed with single-point probes. It was found that at initialization of the flow a regular vorticity street is formed, which collapses at a normalized time t * =U t/s≈17 due to vorticity interactions. After this the flow is dominated by complicated vorticity roll-up and shedding dynamics in the recirculation region. The starting phase is terminated for t * 〉40. Prior to the collapse of the vorticity street values of 9 times the steady state asymptotic wall normal stress and of twice the steady state negative wall shear stress were observed. The early increasing slope of the reattachment length is constant over a time of approximately t * =8. The collapse of the vorticity street and the vorticity interactions thereafter cause fluctuations both in the velocity in the free shear layer and in the reattachment length. The fully developed flow has a dominant frequency corresponding to a Strouhal number St=fs/U≈0.04.

    Notes: Abstract The structure and concentration field of a round water jet in a uniform counterflow is investigated using planar laser-induced fluorescence for jet to counterflow velocity ratios between 1.6 and 10.0. At low jet- to counterflow velocity ratios, the flow appears to be quite stable, with a nearly constant downstream extent and regular vortex shedding. As the velocity ratio increases, the flow becomes more unstable, with significant fluctuations along both the downstream and radial directions. The flow is quite sensitive to directional perturbations, with even slight inclinations of the jet with respect to the counterflow resulting in regular asymmetric vortex shedding and a decreased mean downstream extent. Data on the mean and maximum downstream extents, as well as the maximum radial extent of the flow at various velocity ratios, are shown. A simple model is introduced to explain the dependence of the normalized mean downstream extent of the flow upon the velocity ratio. In addition, mean concentration data are presented. The results suggest that there exists a core region of “jet-like” dilution in the flow.

    Notes: The production of EDDS (ethylene-diamine-disuccinic acid), a potential substitute for EDTA, has been optimized up to a product concentration of 20 grams per litre in fermentations of Amycolatopsis orientalis.
